    What Could the White Body Do For Decolonising Psychology? 31 Questions

    With my White, sick bones-cum-ancestors, I analyse my pedagogical attempts at ‘decolonising Psychology’ to theorise whiteness and experiment with praxis. While White supremacy is seen and felt by Black, Indigenous and other People of Colour, it is unseen by White people, thereby triggering discomfort and fragility when brought to the surface. But what if White supremacy is both unseen and unfelt by White people, if White discomfort and fragility involve White fusion– a refusing and re-fusing of feeling that otherwise threatens our sense of innocence and mastery? Implicating coloniality, the flesh and the more-than-human, this ‘re/fusal’ suggests that decolonising Psychology requires an embodied, inspirited praxis; letting go of innocence, mastery and re/fusal for an unfamiliar otherworld of response-ability, humility and imagination. These changes may revive the psykhe – breath – of Psychology within coloniality, helping us to conspire with those rising against this state of breathlessness. While this Abstract has reflected on content, I conclude with a ‘Concrete’ that reflects on form, before offering responses from a Māori and Pākehā scholar

    The importance of thermal contact resistance between layers in heat transfer through two layer, plasma sprayed, thermal barrier coatings applied to turbine vanes was investigated. Results obtained with a system of NiCrAlY bond and yttria stabilized zirconia ceramic show that thermal contact resistance between layers is negligible. These results also verified other studies which showed that thermal contact resistance is negligible for a different coating system of NiCr bond calcia stabilized zirconia ceramic. The zirconia stabilized ceramic thermal conductivity data scatter presented in the literature is ?20 to -10 percent about a curve fit of the data. More accurate predictions of heat transfer and metal wall temperatures are obtained when the thermal conductivity values are used at the ?20 percent level

    Further industrial tests of ceramic thermal barrier coatings

    The NASA Lewis Research Center made technical assistance arrangements (contracts) with several commercial organizations under which Lewis designed plasma-sprayed thermal-barrier coatings (TBC) for their products. Lewis was then furnished with the test conditions and evaluations of coating usefulness. The coating systems were developed and sprayed at Lewis. All of the systems incorporated a two-layer, ceramic-bond coating concept. Coating thickness and chemical composition were varied to fit three applications: the leading edges of first-stage turbine vanes for an advanced gas turbine engine; the flame impingement surfaces of a combustor transition section; and diesel engine valves and head surfaces. The TBC incorporated yytria-stabilized zirconia, which lowered metal temperatures, protected metal parts, and increased metal part life. In some cases metal burning, melting, and warping were eliminated. Additional benefits were realized from these endeavors: hands-on experience with thermal-barrier coatings was provided to industry; the success of these endeavors encourages these and other organizations to accelerate the implementation of TBC technology

    Ceramic coating effect on liner metal temperatures of film-cooled annular combustor

    An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted to determine the effect of a ceramic coating on the average metal temperatures of full annular, film cooled combustion chamber liner. The investigation was conducted at pressures from 0.50 to 0.062. At all test conditions, experimental results indicate that application of a ceramic coating will result in significantly lower wall temperatures. In a simplified heat transfer analysis, agreement between experimental and calculated liner temperatures was achieved. Simulated spalling of a small portion of the ceramic coating resulted in only small increases in liner temperature because of the thermal conduction of heat from the hotter, uncoated liner metal

    Radical archiving as social psychology from the future.

    Drawing on Michelle Fine’s (2006) vision for social psychology, I argue for radical archiving as a means for “bearing witness”. In March 2013 the Center for Constitutional Rights filed a class action lawsuit against the New York Police Department for their racist “stop and frisk” practices. I was asked by two connected collectives to sit in on Floyd vs. City of New York and make a live and public documentation of it; Communities United for Police Reform asked me to do it “as an activist”, the Public Science Project asked me to also bring my “critical psychological lens”. How I did so was not planned – it was informed and it was unfolding. Two years on, I push the nascent literature on radical archiving to experiment with how this practice may not (just) offer scripts for the future but signs from an emancipated one. I argue that the reflexive demands of radical archiving make for conditions of instability that in turn welcome time-traveling – moments of utopian potential co-constituted by the archiver and the archive – thereby bearing witness to a world that could be. The archive, then, is not a passive object of inquiry so much as an active, unruly companion for strengthening the response-ability of a critical and creative social psychology from the future

In this Introduction, we summarise some shapeshifting possibilities for knowledge, knowing, knowers when experimenting with form. And we overview how, through Awry², we are experimenting with making a space for these possibilities to both breathe and be put to the test
