Application of convolve-multiply-convolve SAW processor for satellite communications

    Get PDF
There is a need for a satellite communications receiver than can perform simultaneous multi-channel processing of single channel per carrier (SCPC) signals originating from various small (mobile or fixed) earth stations. The number of ground users can be as many as 1000. Conventional techniques of simultaneously processing these signals is by employing as many RF-bandpass filters as the number of channels. Consequently, such an approach would result in a bulky receiver, which becomes impractical for satellite applications. A unique approach utilizing a realtime surface acoustic wave (SAW) chirp transform processor is presented. The application of a Convolve-Multiply-Convolve (CMC) chirp transform processor is described. The CMC processor transforms each input channel into a unique timeslot, while preserving its modulation content (in this case QPSK). Subsequently, each channel is individually demodulated without the need of input channel filters. Circuit complexity is significantly reduced, because the output frequency of the CMC processor is common for all input channel frequencies. The results of theoretical analysis and experimental results are in good agreement

Intersubband transitions in pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs multiple step quantum wells

Intersubband transitions from the ground state to the first and second excited states in pseudomorphic AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs multiple step quantum wells have been observed. The step well structure has a configuration of two AlGaAs barriers confining an InGaAs/GaAs step. Multiple step wells were grown on GaAs substrate with each InGaAs layer compressively strained. During the growth, a uniform growth condition was adopted so that inconvenient long growth interruptions and fast temperature ramps when switching the materials were eliminated. The sample was examined by cross‐sectional transmission electron microscopy, an x‐ray rocking curve technique, and the results show good crystal quality using this simple growth method. Theoretical calculations were performed to fit the intersubband absorption spectrum. The calculated energies are in good agreement with the observed peak positions for both the 1→2 and 1→3 transitions

A staged approach with vincristine, adriamycin, and dexamethasone followed by bortezomib, thalidomide, and dexamethasone before autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma

Bortezomib-based regimens have significant activities in multiple myeloma (MM). In this study, we tested the efficacy of a total therapy with a staged approach where newly diagnosed MM patients received vincristine/adriamycin/dexamethsone (VAD). VAD-sensitive patients (≥75% paraprotein reduction) received autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT), whereas less VAD-sensitive patients (<75% paraprotein reduction) received bortezomib/thalidomide/dexamethasone (VTD) for further cytoreduction prior to auto-HSCT. On an intention-to-treat analysis, a progressive increase of complete remission (CR) rates was observed, with cumulative CR rates of 48% after HSCT. Seven patients progressed leading to three fatalities, of which two had central nervous system disease. The 3-year overall survival and event-free survival were 75.1% and 48.3%, respectively. Six patients developed oligoclonal reconstitution with new paraproteins. In the absence of anticoagulant prophylaxis, no patients developed deep vein thrombosis. The staged application of VAD+/–VTD/auto-HSCT resulted in an appreciable response rate and promising survivals. Our approach reduced the use of bortezomib without compromising the ultimate CR rate and is of financial significance for less affluent communities

Anti-self-dual Riemannian metrics without Killing vectors, can they be realized on K3?

Explicit Riemannian metrics with Euclidean signature and anti-self dual curvature that do not admit any Killing vectors are presented. The metric and the Riemann curvature scalars are homogenous functions of degree zero in a single real potential and its derivatives. The solution for the potential is a sum of exponential functions which suggests that for the choice of a suitable domain of coordinates and parameters it can be the metric on a compact manifold. Then, by the theorem of Hitchin, it could be a class of metrics on K3K3, or on surfaces whose universal covering is K3K3.Comment: Misprints in eqs.(9-11) corrected. Nuclear constraints on non-Newtonian gravity at femtometer scale

Effects of the non-Newtonian gravity on properties of finite nuclei are studied by consistently incorporating both the direct and exchange contribution of the Yukawa potential in the Hartree-Fock approach using a well-tested Skyrme force for the strong interaction. It is shown for the first time that the strength of the Yukawa term in the non-Newtonian gravity is limited to log(α)<1.75/[λ(fm)]0.54+33.6\log(|\alpha|)<1.75/[\lambda(\rm fm)]^{0.54} + 33.6 within the length scale of λ=110\lambda=1-10 fm in order for the calculated properties of finite nuclei not to be in conflict with accurate experimental data available.Comment: Additional discussions and references added; related Lab Talk is available via http://iopscience.iop.org/0954-3899/labtalk-article/5229

Gauge Theory for Quantum Spin Glasses

The gauge theory for random spin systems is extended to quantum spin glasses to derive a number of exact and/or rigorous results. The transverse Ising model and the quantum gauge glass are shown to be gauge invariant. For these models, an identity is proved that the expectation value of the gauge invariant operator in the ferromagnetic limit is equal to the one in the classical equilibrium state on the Nishimori line. As a result, a set of inequalities for the correlation function are proved, which restrict the location of the ordered phase. It is also proved that there is no long-range order in the two-dimensional quantum gauge glass in the ground state. The phase diagram for the quantum XY Mattis model is determined.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure

Search for supersolidity in 4He in low-frequency sound experiments

We present results of the search for supersolid 4He using low-frequency, low-level mechanical excitation of a solid sample grown and cooled at fixed volume. We have observed low frequency non-linear resonances that constitute anomalous features. These features, which appear below about 0.8 K, are absent in 3He. The frequency, the amplitude at which the nonlinearity sets in, and the upper temperature limit of existence of these resonances depend markedly on the sample history.Comment: Submitted to the Quantum Fluids and Solids Conf.
