    Accelerating Frank-Wolfe Algorithm using Low-Dimensional and Adaptive Data Structures

    In this paper, we study the problem of speeding up a type of optimization algorithms called Frank-Wolfe, a conditional gradient method. We develop and employ two novel inner product search data structures, improving the prior fastest algorithm in [Shrivastava, Song and Xu, NeurIPS 2021]. * The first data structure uses low-dimensional random projection to reduce the problem to a lower dimension, then uses efficient inner product data structure. It has preprocessing time O~(ndω1+dn1+o(1))\tilde O(nd^{\omega-1}+dn^{1+o(1)}) and per iteration cost O~(d+nρ)\tilde O(d+n^\rho) for small constant ρ\rho. * The second data structure leverages the recent development in adaptive inner product search data structure that can output estimations to all inner products. It has preprocessing time O~(nd)\tilde O(nd) and per iteration cost O~(d+n)\tilde O(d+n). The first algorithm improves the state-of-the-art (with preprocessing time O~(d2n1+o(1))\tilde O(d^2n^{1+o(1)}) and per iteration cost O~(dnρ)\tilde O(dn^\rho)) in all cases, while the second one provides an even faster preprocessing time and is suitable when the number of iterations is small

    Socio-economic inequalities in health service utilization among Chinese rural migrant workers with New Cooperative Medical Scheme: a multilevel regression approach

    BackgroundWhile reducing inequity in health service utilization is an important goal of China's health system, it has been widely acknowledged that a huge number of rural migrant workers cannot be effectually protected against risks with the New Rural Cooperative Medical Insurance (NCMS).MethodData of the 2016 China Labor-force Dynamic Survey and the Chinese Urban Statistical Yearbook were used. The multilevel regression approach was implemented with a nationally representative sample of rural migrant workers with NCMS. Our study adopted the concentration index and its decomposition method to quantify the inequality of their health service utilization.ResultThe multilevel model analysis indicated that impact variables for health service utilization were not concentrated, especially the contextual and individual characteristics. The concentration indices of the probability of two weeks outpatient and the probability of inpatient were -0.168 (95%CI:-0.236,-0.092) and -0.072 (95%CI:-1.085,-0.060), respectively. The horizontal inequality indices for the probability of two-week outpatient and the probability of inpatient were -0.012 and 0.053, respectively.ConclusionThe health service utilization of rural migrant workers with NCMS is insufficient. Our study highlighted that substantial inequalities in their health service utilization did exist. In addition, their need of health service utilization increased the pro-poor inequality. Based on the findings, our study offered notable implications on compensation policies and benefit packages to improve the equality among rural migrant workers with NCMS

    Contemporaneous symptom networks and correlates during endocrine therapy among breast cancer patients: A network analysis

    BackgroundEndocrine therapy-related symptoms are associated with early discontinuation and quality of life among breast cancer survivors. Although previous studies have examined these symptoms and clinical covariates, little is known about the interactions among different symptoms and correlates. This study aimed to explore the complex relationship of endocrine therapy-related symptoms and to identify the core symptoms among breast cancer patients.MethodsThis is a secondary data analysis conducted based on a multicenter cross-sectional study of 613 breast cancer patients in China. All participants completed the 19-item Chinese version of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Endocrine Subscale (FACT-ES). Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to identify significant factors. A contemporaneous network with 15 frequently occurring symptoms was constructed after controlling for age, payment, use of aromatase inhibitors, and history of surgery. Network comparison tests were used to assess differences in network structure across demographic and treatment characteristics.ResultsAll 613 participants were female, with an average age of 49 years (SD = 9.4). The average duration of endocrine therapy was 3.6 years (SD = 2.3) and the average symptom score was 18.99 (SD = 11.43). Irritability (n = 512, 83.52%) and mood swings (n = 498, 81.24%) were the most prevalent symptoms. Lost interest in sex (mean = 1.95, SD = 1.39) and joint pain (mean = 1.57, SD = 1.18) were the most severe symptoms. The edges in the clusters of emotional symptoms (“irritability-mood swings”), vasomotor symptoms (“hot flashes-cold sweats-night sweats”), vaginal symptoms (“vaginal discharge-vaginal itching”), sexual symptoms (“pain or discomfort with intercourse-lost interest in sex-vaginal dryness”), and neurological symptoms (“headaches-dizziness”) were the thickest in the network. There were no significant differences in network structure (P = 0.088), and global strength (P = 0.330) across treatment types (selective estrogen receptor modulators vs. aromatase inhibitors). Based on an evaluation of the centrality indices, irritability and mood swings appeared to be structurally important nodes after adjusting for the clinical covariates and after performing subgroup comparisons.ConclusionEndocrine therapy-related symptoms are frequently reported issues among breast cancer patients. Our findings demonstrated that developing targeted interventions focused on emotional symptoms may relieve the overall symptom burden for breast cancer patients during endocrine therapy

    Direct visualization of electric current induced dipoles of atomic impurities

    Learning the electron scattering around atomic impurities is a fundamental step to fully understand the basic electronic transport properties of realistic conducting materials. Although many efforts have been made in this field for several decades, atomic scale transport around single point-like impurities has yet been achieved. Here, we report the direct visualization of the electric current induced dipoles around single atomic impurities in epitaxial bilayer graphene by multi-probe low temperature scanning tunneling potentiometry as the local current density is raised up to around 25 A/m, which is considerably higher than that in previous studies. We find the directions of these dipoles which are parallel or anti-parallel to local current are determined by the charge polarity of the impurities, revealing the direct evidence for the existence of the carrier density modulation effect proposed by Landauer in 1976. Furthermore, by inin situsitu tuning local current direction with contact probes, these dipoles are redirected correspondingly. Our work paves the way to explore the electronic quantum transport phenomena at single atomic impurity level and the potential future electronics toward or beyond the end of Moore's Law

    Reduced Energy Metabolism Impairs T Cell-Dependent B Cell Responses in Patients With Advanced HBV-Related Cirrhosis

    Background and AimsPatients with decompensated HBV-related liver cirrhosis (HBV D-LC) showed compromised immune responses, which manifested as a proneness to develop infections and hyporesponsiveness to vaccines, resulting in accelerated disease progression. The alterations in T cell-dependent B cell responses in this pathophysiological process were not well understood. This study aimed to investigate T cell-dependent B cell responses in this process and discuss the mechanism from the perspective of metabolism.MethodsChanges in phenotypes and subsets of peripheral B cells between HBV D-LC patients and healthy controls (HCs) were compared by flow cytometry. Isolated B cells were activated by coculture with circulating T follicular (cTfh) cells. After coculture, the frequencies of plasmablasts and plasma cells and immunoglobin levels were analyzed. Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and glycolysis were analyzed by a Seahorse analyzer. Mitochondrial function and the AKT/mTOR pathway were analyzed by flow cytometry.ResultsThe proliferation and differentiation capacities of B cells after T cell stimulation were impaired in D-LC. Furthermore, we found that B cells from D-LC patients showed reductions in OXPHOS and glycolysis after activation, which may result from reduced glucose uptake, mitochondrial dysfunction and attenuated activation of the AKT/mTOR pathway.ConclusionsB cells from HBV D-LC patients showed dysfunctional energy metabolism after T cell-dependent activation. Understanding the regulations of B cell metabolic pathway and their changes may provide a new direction to rescue B cell hyporesponsiveness in patients with HBV D-LC, preventing these patients be infected and improving sensitivity to vaccines

    Signal Denoising Method Based on Improved Wavelet Threshold Function for Microchip Electrophoresis C4D Equipment

    A signal denoising method using improved wavelet threshold function is presented for microchip electrophoresis based on capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (ME-C4D) device. The evaluation results of denoising effect for the ME-C4D simulation signal show that using Daubechies 5 (db5) wavelet at a decomposition level 4 can produce the best performance. Furthermore, the denoising effect is compared with, as well as proved to be superior to, the existing techniques, such as Savitzky–Golay, Fast Fourier Transform, and soft threshold method. This method has been successfully applied to the self-developed ME-C4D equipment. After executing this method, the noise is cleanly removed, and the signal peak shape and peak area are well maintained

    Abstract Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a huge medical problem nowadays as there is no hospital providing the versatile strategies for repairing central nervous system and restoring function. Herein, we focused on PC-12 cells as an important research tool and studied the potential role of resveratrol (RSV) in inflammation induced by LPS. Results RSV improved inflammatory injury and functional recovery in rat model of SCI. RSV inhibited LPS-induced inflammatory injury in PC-12 cells via increasing viability, decreasing apoptosis, and suppressing IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α expression. miR-132 was down-regulated after LPS treatment but up-regulated after RSV administration. miR-132 silence curbed the protective effect of RSV. The results including increase of cell growth, suppression of inflammatory response, and blocking of NF-κB and p38MAPK pathways produced by RSV were all reversed by miR-132 silence. Conclusion RSV could up-regulate miR-132 and further ameliorate inflammatory response in PC-12 cells by inhibiting NF-κB and p38MAPK pathways

    Abstract Cancer is a malignant tumor that seriously threatens human life and health. At present, the main treatment methods include surgical resection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. However, the mechanism of tumor occurrence and development is complex, and it produces resistance to some traditional treatment methods, leading to treatment failure and a high mortality rate for patients. Therefore, exploring the molecular mechanisms of tumor occurrence, development, and drug resistance is a very important task. MiRNAs are a type of non-coding small RNA that regulate a series of biological effects by binding to the 3′-UTR of the target mRNA, degrading the mRNA, or inhibiting its translation. MiR-1-3p is an important member of them, which is abnormally expressed in various tumors and closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors. This article introduces miR-1-3p from multiple aspects, including its production and regulation, role in tumor occurrence and development, clinical significance, role in drug resistance, and approaches for targeting miR-1-3p.
