    Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasm of the Pancreas: Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature

    AbstractSolid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare low-grade malignant-potential epithelial tumor that predominantly affects young women aged 20–35 years with a mean age of 22 years. It is currently categorized in the World Health Organization classification under exocrine pancreatic tumor. Here, we present two cases of SPN with initial presentation of large intra-abdominal masses. Both patients underwent successful en bloc distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. Local recurrence and distant metastasis were not detected at the follow up at 21 months and 9 years respectively. In summary, a large, well-encapsulated cystic mass in the pancreas of a young woman should raise suspicion of SPN

    Room temperature gas sensing with a hybrid poly-Si/ZnO TFT cell

    In this work, we study the capability of a novel poly-Si/Zno hybrid TFT cell in sensing NO2 gas. Fabrication and structural features of this cell are identical to that reported in one of our previous works [1] except that the IGZO TFT is replaced by a ZnO one. The equivalent circuit of the hybrid cell is shown in Fig. 1, in which the poly-Si TFT and ZnO TFT are employed as the amplifier and sensor, respectively. In the configuration, the top gate of the poly-Si TFT is electrically connected to the drain of the bottom-gated ZnO TFT, while the top surface of the ZnO channel is exposed to the environment for sensing purposes. For the electrical measurements conducted at room temperature, the current source (IIN) was set at 100 pA with a compliance VG of 2 V. Concentration of the NO2 gas in the ambient was varied from 0 ~100 ppm. Transfer characteristics of the cell are expressed by showing the drain current of the poly-Si TFT as a function of the back-gate bias (VBG) of the ZnO TFT. In the figure, we can see the I-V curves show a parallel and positive shift as the concentration of the NO2 gas is increased. Meanwhile, the transitions in the figure are steep with a slope of around -60 mV/dec whose absolute value is much smaller than the subthreshold slopes of the individual ZnO TFT (\u3e300 mV/dec). The finding provides good evidence showing the potential of this scheme in promoting measurement sensitivity compared with conventional oxide-semiconductor TFTs.     Image Deraining via Self-supervised Reinforcement Learning

    The quality of images captured outdoors is often affected by the weather. One factor that interferes with sight is rain, which can obstruct the view of observers and computer vision applications that rely on those images. The work aims to recover rain images by removing rain streaks via Self-supervised Reinforcement Learning (RL) for image deraining (SRL-Derain). We locate rain streak pixels from the input rain image via dictionary learning and use pixel-wise RL agents to take multiple inpainting actions to remove rain progressively. To our knowledge, this work is the first attempt where self-supervised RL is applied to image deraining. Experimental results on several benchmark image-deraining datasets show that the proposed SRL-Derain performs favorably against state-of-the-art few-shot and self-supervised deraining and denoising methods

    Subchronic and Genetic Safety Assessment of a New Medicinal Dendrobium

    Dendrobium Taiseed Tosnobile is a new species of herba dendrobii (Shi-Hu) that was developed by crossbreeding D. tosaense and D. nobile. Its pharmacological activity and active component have been reported, but its subchronic toxicity and genetic safety have not yet been investigated. This study assessed the 90-day oral toxicity and genetic safety of the aqueous extracts of D. Taiseed Tosnobile (DTTE) in male and female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Eighty rats were divided into four groups, each consisting of ten male and ten female rats. DTTE was given orally to rats at 800, 1600, or 2400 mg/kg for 90 consecutive days, and distilled water was used for the control group. Genotoxicity studies were performed using a bacterial reverse mutation assay and in vivo mammalian cell micronucleus test in ICR mice and analyzed using flow cytometry. Throughout the study period, no abnormal changes were observed in clinical signs and body weight or on ophthalmological examinations. Additionally, no significant differences were found in urinalysis, hematology, and serum biochemistry parameters between the treatment and control groups. Necropsy and histopathological examination indicated no treatment-related changes. Based on results, the no-observed-adverse-effect level of DTTE is greater than 2400 mg/kg in SD rats

    A Retrospective Cohort Study Comparing Stroke Recurrence Rate in Ischemic Stroke Patients With and Without Acupuncture Treatment.

    Little was known about the effects of acupuncture on stroke recurrence. The aim of this study is to investigate whether ischemic stroke patients receiving acupuncture treatment have a decreased risk of stroke recurrence. A retrospective cohort study of 30,058 newly diagnosed cases of ischemic stroke in 2000 to 2004 was conducted based on the claims of Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The use of acupuncture treatment and stroke recurrence were identified during the follow-up period from 2000 to 2009. This study compared the risk of stroke recurrence between ischemic stroke cohorts with and without acupuncture treatment by calculating adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of acupuncture associated with stroke recurrence in the Cox proportional hazard model. The stroke recurrence rate per 1000 person-years decreased from 71.4 without to 69.9 with acupuncture treatment (P < 0.001). Acupuncture treatment was associated with reduced risk of stroke recurrence (HR 0.88; 95% CI 0.84-0.91). The acupuncture effect was noted in patients with or without medical treatment for stroke prevention but its impact decreased with aging of stroke patients. Compared with stroke patients without acupuncture treatment and medication therapy, the hazard ratios of stroke recurrence for those had medication therapy only, acupuncture only, and both were 0.42 (95% CI 0.38-0.46), 0.50 (95% CI 0.43-0.57), and 0.39 (95% CI 0.35-0.43), respectively. This study raises the possibility that acupuncture might be effective in lowering stroke recurrence rate even in those on medications for stroke prevention. Results suggest the need of prospective sham-controlled and randomized trials to establish the efficacy of acupuncture in preventing stroke

    Association between copy number variation of complement component C4 and Graves' disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gene copy number of complement component <it>C4</it>, which varies among individuals, may determine the intrinsic strength of the classical complement pathway. Presuming a major role of complement as an effecter in peptide-mediated inflammation and phagocytosis, we hypothesized that <it>C4 </it>genetic diversity may partially explain the development of Graves' disease (GD) and the variation in its outcomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A case-control study including 624 patients with GD and 160 healthy individuals were enrolled. CNV of <it>C4 </it>isotypes (<it>C4A </it>and <it>C4B</it>) genes were performed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Statistical comparison and identification of CNV of total <it>C4, C4 </it>isotypes (<it>C4A </it>and <it>C4B</it>) and <it>C4 </it>polymorphisms were estimated according to the occurrence of GD and its associated clinical features.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Individuals with 4, 2, and 2 copies of <it>C4</it>, <it>C4A </it>and <it>C4B </it>genes, especially those with A2B2 polymorphism may associate with the development of GD (p = 0.001, OR = 10.994, 95% CI: 6.277-19.255; p = 0.008, OR = 1.732, 95% CI: 1.190-2.520; p = 2.420 Ă— 10-5, OR = 2.621, 95% CI: 1.791-3.835; and <it>p </it>= 1.395 Ă— 10<sup>-4</sup>, OR = 2.671, 95% CI: 1.761-4.052, respectively). Although the distribution of copy number for total <it>C4</it>, <it>C4 </it>isotypes as well as <it>C4 </it>polymorphisms did not associate with the occurrence of goiter, nodular hyperplasia, GO and myxedema, <2 copies of <it>C4A </it>may associate with high risk toward vitiligo in patients with GD (<it>p </it>= 0.001, OR = 5.579, 95% CI: 1.659-18.763).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results may be further estimated for its clinical application on GD and the vitiligo in patients with GD.</p
