Uptake of HIV testing and its correlates among sexually experienced college students in Southwestern, China: a Web-Based online cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is becoming more common among college students in China. However, latest data on the prevalence and correlates of HIV testing among sexually experienced college students is rarely.
METHODS: An online survey was conducted among college students aged 18 years or older using multistage stratified cluster sampling from 16 colleges. Data on socio-demographic, HIV testing, HIV-related awareness, attitudes, sexual education and behaviors were collected. Propensity score matching (PSM) and logistic regression model were used to identify factors associated with HIV testing.
RESULT: A total of 108,987 students participated the survey, of which 13,201 sexually experienced college students were included in this study. 1,939 (14.69%) college students with sexual experience reported uptake of HIV testing in the preceding year. The uptake of HIV testing increased for college students with a rising HIV knowledge score and sexual health knowledge. Being awareness of HIV-related knowledge (aOR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.01-1.30), accepting one-night stands (aOR = 1.16, 95%CI:1.03-1.32), obtaining satisfactory sexual interpretation from parent(s) (aOR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.07-1.43), ever had unintended pregnancy (aOR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.32-2.38), ever had received HIV-related preventive service(s) (aOR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.10-1.70), ever had participated HIV-related preventive services (aOR = 3.76, 95%CI: 2.99-4.75) and ever had anal sex (aOR = 2.66, 95%CI: 2.11-3.34) were positively associated with uptake of HIV testing. However, accepting premarital sex (aOR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.66-0.88), accepting cohabitation (aOR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.61-0.92), occasionally discussing sex with parent(s) (aOR = 0.68, 95%CI: 0.50-0.91), and being with moderate satisfaction of school sex courses (aOR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.58-0.95) were negatively associated with uptake of HIV testing.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of HIV testing was relatively low. Participation in HIV-related services and high-risk sexual behaviors were important enablers for testing. Improving sex education for students, increasing HIV preventive services on campus, and improving family sex education are necessary to increase HIV testing among college sexually experienced students
Idiopathic Ventricular Arrhythmias Originating From the Pulmonary Sinus Cusp Prevalence, Electrocardiographic/Electrophysiological Characteristics, and Catheter Ablation
AbstractBackgroundIdiopathic ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) originating from the pulmonary sinus cusp (PSC) have not been sufficiently clarified.ObjectivesThe goal of this study was to investigate the prevalence, electrocardiographic characteristics, mapping, and ablation of idiopathic VAs arising from the PSC.MethodsData were analyzed from 218 patients undergoing successful endocardial ablation of idiopathic VAs with a left bundle branch block morphology and inferior axis deviation.ResultsTwenty-four patients had VAs originating from the PSC. In the first 7 patients, initial ablation performed in the right ventricular outflow tract failed to abolish the clinical VAs but produced a small change in the QRS morphology in 3 patients. In all 24 patients, the earliest activation was eventually identified in the PSC, at which a sharp potential was observed preceding the QRS complex onset by 28.2 ± 2.9 ms. The successful ablation site was in the right cusp (RC) in 10 patients (42%), the left cusp (LC) in 8 (33%), and the anterior cusp (AC) in 6 (25%). Electrocardiographic analysis showed that RC-VAs had significantly larger R-wave amplitude in lead I and a smaller aVL/aVR ratio of Q-wave amplitude compared with AC-VAs and LC-VAs, respectively. The R-wave amplitude in inferior leads was smaller in VAs localized in the RC than in the LC but did not differ between VAs from the AC and LC.ConclusionsVAs arising from the PSC are not uncommon, and RC-VAs have unique electrocardiographic characteristics. These VAs can be successfully ablated within the PSC
Non-coding RNAs: The recently accentuated molecules in the regulation of cell autophagy for ovarian cancer pathogenesis and therapeutic response
Autophagy is a self-recycling and conserved process, in which the senescent cytoplasmic components are degraded in cells and then recycled to maintain homeostatic balance. Emerging evidence has suggested the involvement of autophagy in oncogenesis and progression of various cancers, such as ovarian cancer (OC). Meanwhile, the non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) frequently regulate the mRNA transcription and other functional signaling pathways in cell autophagy, displaying promising roles in human cancer pathogenesis and therapeutic response. This article mainly reviews the cutting-edge research advances about the interactions between ncRNAs and autophagy in OC. This review not only summarizes the underlying mechanisms of dynamic ncRNA-autophagy association in OC, but also discusses their prognostic implications and therapeutic biomarkers. The aim of this review was to provide a more in-depth knowledge framework exploring the ncRNA-autophagy crosstalk and highlight the promising treatment strategies for OC patients
Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
Drug metabolism-related gene ABCA1 augments temozolomide chemoresistance and immune infiltration abundance of M2 macrophages in glioma
Abstract Gliomas are the most prevalent primary tumor in the central nervous system, with an abysmal 5-year survival rate and alarming mortality. The current standard management of glioma is maximum resection of tumors followed by postoperative chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) or radiotherapy. Low chemosensitivity of TMZ in glioma treatment eventuates limited therapeutic efficacy or treatment failure. Hence, overcoming the resistance of glioma to TMZ is a pressing question. Our research centered on identifying the drug metabolism-related genes potentially involved in TMZ-treated resistance of glioma through several bioinformatics datasets and cell experiments. One efflux transporter, ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily A1 (ABCA1), was discovered with an upregulated expression level and signaled poor clinical outcomes for glioma patients. The transcript level of ABCA1 significantly elevated across the TMZ-resistant glioma cells in contrast with non-resistant cells. Over-expressed ABCA1 restrained the drug activity of TMZ, and ABCA1 knockdown improved the treatment efficacy. Meanwhile, the results of molecular docking between ABCA1 protein and TMZ showed a high binding affinity. Additionally, co-expression and immunological analysis revealed that ABCA1 facilitates the immune infiltration of M2 macrophages in glioma, thereby stimulating tumor growth and aggravating the poor survival of patients. Altogether, we discovered that the ABCA1 transporter was involved in TMZ chemoresistance and the immune infiltration of M2 macrophages in glioma. Treatment with TMZ after ABCA1 knockdown enhances the chemosensitivity, suggesting that inhibition of ABCA1 may be a potential strategy for improving the therapeutic efficacy of gliomas
Dual Role Of Polyaniline For Achieving Ag Dendrites And Enhancing Its Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalytic Activity
Ag dendrites were readily achieved via the redox reaction between polyaniline and AgNO3 in aqueous dispersion. The diffusion-limited aggregation was adopted for the generation of dendrite structure and the oxidized polyaniline was not removed for purifying the Ag dendrites. The existence of the Ag and polyaniline was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectra. The oxygen reduction reaction activity of the product was examined with rotating disk electrode voltammetry in 0.1 M KOH aqueous solution. The presence of the polyaniline greatly enhanced the oxygen reduction reaction catalytic activity of Ag dendrites and an onset and half-wave potential of 0.846 and 0.651 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively, were obtained. We demonstrate the possible positive effect of the template that might be ignored in many cases and this can lead us to construct series of similar catalytic systems
A Novel Two-Stage Approach for Automatic Extraction and Multi-View Generation of Litchis
Obtaining consistent multi-view images of litchis is crucial for various litchi-related studies, such as data augmentation and 3D reconstruction. This paper proposes a two-stage model that integrates the Mask2Former semantic segmentation network with the Wonder3D multi-view generation network. This integration aims to accurately segment and extract litchis from complex backgrounds and generate consistent multi-view images of previously unseen litchis. In the first stage, the Mask2Former model is utilized to predict litchi masks, enabling the extraction of litchis from complex backgrounds. To further enhance the accuracy of litchi branch extraction, we propose a novel method that combines the predicted masks with morphological operations and the HSV color space. This approach ensures accurate extraction of litchi branches even when the semantic segmentation model’s prediction accuracy is not high. In the second stage, the segmented and extracted litchi images are passed as input into the Wonder3D network to generate multi-view of the litchis. After comparing different semantic segmentation and multi-view synthesis networks, the Mask2Former and Wonder3D networks demonstrated the best performance. The Mask2Former network achieved a mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 79.79% and a mean pixel accuracy (mPA) of 85.82%. The Wonder3D network achieved a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 18.89 dB, a structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.8199, and a learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS) of 0.114. Combining the Mask2Former model with the Wonder3D network resulted in an increase in PSNR and SSIM scores by 0.21 dB and 0.0121, respectively, and a decrease in LPIPS by 0.064 compared to using the Wonder3D model alone. Therefore, the proposed two-stage model effectively achieves automatic extraction and multi-view generation of litchis with high accuracy
Graphene/tri-block copolymer composites prepared via RAFT polymerizations for dual controlled drug delivery via pH stimulation and biodegradation
A novel tri-block copolymer poly(oxopentanoate ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(pyridyl disulfide ethyl acrylate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol acrylate) [poly(OEMA-b-PDEA-b-PEGA)], retaining active keto groups and pyridyl disulfide (PDS) side functionalities, was synthesized as a drug delivery vehicle using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method. One mimic drug pyridine-2-thione (PT) was introduced into the monomer, PDEA for copolymerization. The other mimic drug O-benzylhydroxylamine (BHA) was conjugated with tri-block copolymer via efficient oxime coupling chemistry, followed by the attachment onto graphene via π-π stacking interaction to obtain a graphene/tri-block copolymer composite. 1H NMR, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to verify the successful step-wise preparation of the tri-block copolymer and drug loaded composite. In vitro release behaviors of BHA and PT from graphene/tri-block copolymer composite via dual drug release mechanisms were investigated. BHA can be released under acid environment, while PT will be released in the presence of reducing agents, such as dithiothreitol (DTT) or glutathione (GSH). It can be envisioned that this novel composite could be exploited as a novel intracellular drug delivery system via dual release mechanisms
