    No full text
In this bibliography of professor Snelders's work the items have been arranged according to the type of publication: books (A), inaugural orations (B), articles in international volumes (C), articles in international journals of history of science (D), articles in volumes in Dutch (E), articles in Dutch journals of history (of science) (F), biographical entries (G), popularizing articles (H). All book reviews and some obituaries have been omitted. In the introduction the items have been arranged according to Snelders's fields of interest: Romanticism and Naturphilosophie (1), physiological and physical chemistry  (2), the reception of new scientific theories, especially in The Netherlands (3), chemistry in The Netherlands (4), theories of matter from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries (5), agricultural chemistry (6), organizational aspects of scientific research (7), various topics like history of instuments, formation of disciplines and science in its social context (8). The last field is exclusively studied by his students ('promovendi'). In all fields dissertation research (‘promotieonderzoek’) and Ph.D.-theses studied and written under the guidance of Snelders are mentioned

SETTING: Two nonprofit organizations in the Netherlands were studied for guideline development. METHODS: An existing filter was adapted to three bibliographic interfaces. After defining the scope, a reference database was built for the development of the new filters. The performance of the new filters was validated in different disease categories. RESULTS: Sensitivity, specificity, precision, negative predictive value, and accuracy were (%): 90.5/98/77/99.2/97 (MEDLINE-Ovid), 90.1/98.8/79.3/99.5/98.3 (PubMed), and 93.1/98.4/81.8/99.6/98.7 (Embase). CONCLUSIONS: The filters provide pragmatic tools for searching for patients' issues. Further optimization and validation is recommended

Verminderde afweer : Risicogroepen en gevolgen voor de huisartsenpraktijk

Due to medication use, comorbidities and/or age, an increasing number of patients have an impaired immunity to infection. Impaired immunity may lead to an increased risk of (opportunistic) infection, complications from infections, and difficulties in the diagnosis of infections. Guided by clinical parameters, a general practitioner can classify an impaired immunity as 'clinically irrelevant', 'limitedly relevant' or 'potentially serious'. Tocilizumab impairs the production of CRP, which makes it unreliable as an infection parameter. In case of a suspected infection in patients with severe immunosuppression, it will often be necessary to consult a specialist as quickly as possible about further diagnostic procedures and the need for, type and administration route of antimicrobials. In patients with an impaired immunity, adaptation of the antibiotic policy and prophylactic measures, such as vaccination, may be indicated. Patients with (functional) asplenia should immediately start antibiotic treatment in case of fever, pending clinical evaluation by a physician

Reproducibility of fluorescent expression from engineered biological constructs in E. coli

We present results of the first large-scale interlaboratory study carried out in synthetic biology, as part of the 2014 and 2015 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competitions. Participants at 88 institutions around the world measured fluorescence from three engineered constitutive constructs in E. coli. Few participants were able to measure absolute fluorescence, so data was analyzed in terms of ratios. Precision was strongly related to fluorescent strength, ranging from 1.54-fold standard deviation for the ratio between strong promoters to 5.75-fold for the ratio between the strongest and weakest promoter, and while host strain did not affect expression ratios, choice of instrument did. This result shows that high quantitative precision and reproducibility of results is possible, while at the same time indicating areas needing improved laboratory practices.Peer reviewe
