    EXPLORING INTENTION TO REUSE RECOMMENDATION AGENTS FROM ACCESSIBILITY-DIAGNOSTICITY PERSPECTIVE: THE MODERATING EFFECT OF DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE

    Recommendation agents help users reduce information overload and improve decision quality. Yet, many online shoppers have negative reaction or have no motivation to use recommendation agents, since they have no idea of whether users can achieve their shopping goals with less effort. We think information is fundamental to using recommendation agents. This study develops a research framework from the accessibility-diagnosticity perspective and proposes explanation facility, perceived similarity and information diagnosticity are important determinants of users’ intention to reuse RAs. We think explanation facility could persuade users of RAs’ performance, similarity could move users to agree with RAs, and information diagnosticity could let users be capable of evaluating RAs. We also consider the moderating role of domain knowledge on relationship of similarity and information diagnosticity. This study conducted a 2*2 factorial experiment for data collection. Results show that decision process and outcome similarity indirectly influence reuse intention by information diagnosticity and the effects of process and outcome similarity varies with degrees of users’ domain knowledge. The influence of explanation facility on similarity is not obvious. The effect of “why” explanation facility on outcome explanation is significantly contrary to our expectation. Explanation facility may have to be utilized carefully. Implications are discussed

    A Study on Consumers’ trust Formation Model Toward Recommendation Agents: Elaboration Likelihood Model

    It is important to make them have trust in Recommendation Agents (RAs), further enhance their intentions to adopt RAs. This study is based on Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to examine how consumers’ (1) (central routes) degree of cognitive effort are affected by providing product-related information, (2) (peripheral routes) degree of social presence are affected by anthropomorphic interface, and (3) product knowledge influence their trust in RAs. We used PLS to analysis the 302 valid samples, and test or verify the hypotheses. The conclusions are as follows: (1) Explanation facility and information search about products significantly increase customers’ trust in RAs. (2) Consumers’ degree of cognitive effort and telepresence would increase their decision satisfaction and social presence respectively, further their cognitive trust and emotional trust. (3) The experts and novices have different ways to establish their trust in RAs

    A preliminary study of applying interpreting skills to teaching English reading

    Even though the established literature has proven that translation actually plays a significant role in English Language Teaching (ELT) as well as in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), there is lack of empirical evidence showing the correlation between the use of sight translation skills and learners' acquisition of English proficiency. This preliminary study recruited 14 English learners and investigated the potential effect of sight translation on the learners' learning outcomes. By comparing the frequencies of ambiguity and significant features appeared in the learners' reading performance in two different genres of texts, the results suggest that the skills of sight translation can successfully improve English learners' reading comprehension. Implications and potential research directions are further addressed

    Weekly and Holiday-Related Patterns of Panic Attacks in Panic Disorder: A Population-Based Study

    Background: While chronobiological studies have reported seasonal variation in panic attacks (PA) episodes, information on the timing of PA by week-days may enable better understanding of the triggers of PA episodes and thereby provide pointers for suitable interventional approaches to minimize PA attacks. This study investigated weekly variation in potential PA admissions including associations with holidays using a population-based longitudinal, administrative claims-based dataset in an Asian population. Methods: This study used ambulatory care data from the ‘‘Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. We identified 993 patients with panic disorder (PD), and they had 4228 emergency room (ER) admissions for potential PA in a 3-year period between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2011. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine associations between the potential PA admissions and holidays/weekend days/work-days of the week. Results: The daily mean number of potential PA admissions was 3.96 (standard deviation 2.05). One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in potential PA admissions by holiday and day of the week (p,0.001). Daily frequencies showed a trough on Wednesday-Thursday, followed by a sharp increase on Saturday and a peak on Sunday. Potential PA admissions were higher than the daily mean for the sample patients by 29.4% and 22.1%, respectively on Sundays and holidays. Furthermore, the weekly variations were similar for females and males, although females always had higher potential PA admissions on both weekdays and holidays than the males. Conclusions: We found that potential PA admissions among persons with PD varied systematically by day of the week, with a significant peak on weekends and holidays

    VoiceBank-2023: A Multi-Speaker Mandarin Speech Corpus for Constructing Personalized TTS Systems for the Speech Impaired

    Services of personalized TTS systems for the Mandarin-speaking speech impaired are rarely mentioned. Taiwan started the VoiceBanking project in 2020, aiming to build a complete set of services to deliver personalized Mandarin TTS systems to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients. This paper reports the corpus design, corpus recording, data purging and correction for the corpus, and evaluations of the developed personalized TTS systems, for the VoiceBanking project. The developed corpus is named after the VoiceBank-2023 speech corpus because of its release year. The corpus contains 29.78 hours of utterances with prompts of short paragraphs and common phrases spoken by 111 native Mandarin speakers. The corpus is labeled with information about gender, degree of speech impairment, types of users, transcription, SNRs, and speaking rates. The VoiceBank-2023 is available by request for non-commercial use and welcomes all parties to join the VoiceBanking project to improve the services for the speech impaired.Comment: submitted to 26th International Conference of the ORIENTAL-COCOSD

    Epidemic Pleurodynia Caused by Coxsackievirus B3 at a Medical Center in Northern Taiwan

    Epidemic pleurodynia is seldom reported in Southeast Asia and there has been no report from Taiwan. We conducted a retrospective chart review of children = 18 years of age in the National Taiwan University Hospital from January 1 to December 31, 2005. Epidemic pleurodynia was defined as an acute illness characterized by sharp localized pain over the chest or upper abdomen. Patients with known heart diseases or pulmonary consolidations were excluded. In total, 28 patients met the case definition of epidemic pleurodynia. Coxsackievirus B3 (CB3) was isolated in 15 (60%) of the 25 throat swab specimens. Four (14%) of the 28 patients presented chest wall tenderness and only one (6%) of the 18 patients tested had an elevated creatinine kinase level. Twenty-one (75%) of the 28 patients described pleuritic chest pains and 10 (45%) of the 22 chest radiographies exhibited pulmonary infiltrates or pleural effusions. Six patients were observed with tonsillar exudates and one was confirmed to have a CB3 urinary tract infection. The clinical features and radiological findings suggest that CB3-associated epidemic pleurodynia might be a disease of the pleura and occasionally spreads to nearby tissues, resulting in chest wall myositis, pulmonary infiltrates and myopericarditis

    Heteroatoms Induce Localization of the Electric Field and Promote a Wide Potential-Window Selectivity Towards CO in the CO2 Electroreduction

    Carbon dioxide electroreduction (CO2RR) is a sustainable way of producing carbon-neutral fuels. Product selectivity in CO2RR is regulated by the adsorption energy of reaction-intermediates. Here, we employ differential phase contrast-scanning transmission electron microscopy (DPC-STEM) to demonstrate that Sn heteroatoms on a Ag catalyst generate very strong and atomically localized electric fields. In situ attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) results verified that the localized electric field enhances the adsorption of *COOH, thus favoring the production of CO during CO2RR. The Ag/Sn catalyst exhibits an approximately 100 % CO selectivity at a very wide range of potentials (from -0.5 to -1.1 V, versus reversible hydrogen electrode), and with a remarkably high energy efficiency (EE) of 76.1 %

    Reduced expression of alpha-1,2-mannosidase I extends lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans

    Exposure to sub-lethal levels of stress, or hormesis, was a means to induce longevity. By screening for mutations that enhance resistance to multiple stresses, we identified multiple alleles of alpha-1,2-mannosidase I (mas1) which, in addition to promoting stress resistance, also extended longevity. Longevity enhancement is also observed when mas1 expression is reduced via RNA interference in both Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. The screen also identified Edem1 (Edm1), a gene downstream of mas1, as a modulator of lifespan. As double mutants for both mas1 and Edm1 showed no additional longevity enhancement, it appeared that both mutations function within a common pathway to extend lifespan. Molecular analysis of these mutants revealed that the expression of BiP, a putative biomarker of dietary restriction (DR), is down-regulated in response to reductions in mas1 expression.
