Relationship between management practice and organisation performance under European Union directives such as RoHS: A case-study of the electrical and electronic industry in Taiwan
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives set by the European Union on the financial and environmental performances of Taiwan’s electrical and electronic companies adopting the green supply chain management. A literature review, in-depth interviews and questionnaires were used as our hypothetical supports. One hundred and fifty-one certified International Organization for Standardization 14001 electrical and electronic companies were randomly selected as the study subjects. Data analyses and hypothesis tests were performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, and Structural Equation Modelling was used to analyse the pathway model and to test the hypothetical structure in this study. We found that these companies mostly adopted green manufacturing practices and green purchasing practices in order to meet the RoHS and WEEE directives. The results of pathway diagram analysis using structural equation modelling (SEM) also showed that the green supply chain management adopted by the study companies had a positive effect on both their financial (p < 0.01) and environmental (p < 0.01) performances, and therefore might be used as a reference for Original Equipment Manufacturing and Original Designing and Manufacturing industries in other Asian Pacific countries. Keywords: RoHS, WEEE, green supply chain management, financial performance, environmental performanc
Accounting harmonization in China - A comparison of A-share and H-share reported earnings
This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the harmonization of Chinese GAAP (2006) with IAS, and focuses on the earning gap differences based on industry categorization. We summary the main findings in our researches: (1)The research result of 2006 was consistent with the prior study that Chinese GAAP based net income was lower than IFRS based net income. (2)Our research finding for 2007 that the earning gaps were eliminated notably as the advent of new Chinese GAAP was supported by our descriptive statistics (3)Under the industry classification, our findings are both supported by the figure description and descriptive statistics with the conclusions that different industry has different level of convergence with IAS. (4)Under the research of accounting items in each industry for data analysis, we found out that the earning gaps between Chinese GAAP and IAS are caused form the environmental factors such as government regulation and industry characteristics in China. We would conclude that the new Chinese GAAP has been converged with IAS in a certain high degree, even though there might be some convergence spaces between these two standards, the accounting differences would not be fully erased due to the national regulations and industry features
Schwannomas of the Left Adrenal Gland and Posterior Mediastinum
Schwannoma is a rare tumor of neural crest cell origin. Most schwannomas occur in the head, neck, stomach or limbs, with a few cases occurring in the retroperitoneal space. A 30-year-old Taiwanese woman presented with a 1-week history of left anterior chest discomfort and left flank pain. The laboratory findings and endocrine studies were all within normal limits. Chest X-ray revealed masses in the posterior mediastinum. Chest computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed several masses in the left paraspinal region and in the left adrenal region. The patient underwent total excision of the left paraspinal tumors and laparoscopic left adrenalectomy. Pathologic studies showed a picture of benign schwannoma. In conclusion, preoperative differentiation of benign schwannoma from malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor or other tumors is important for good prognosis. Total excision of benign schwannoma is associated with favorable outcome in patients
Fluorescent Reagents to Improve the Analytical Infrastructure of Capillary Electrophoretic Separations
Two types of fluorescent molecules had been designed and synthesized to improve the analytical infrastructure of capillary electrophoretic separations. First, a hydrophilic version of the permanently cationic acridine-based fluorophore, HEG2Me2-DAA was synthesized. HEG2Me2-DAA has a lambda^ex max of 490 nm which matches the 488 nm line of the commonly used argon ion laser. The emission spectra of HEG2Me2-DAA are pH-independent. HEG2Me2-DAA was used in capillary electrophoresis with an aqueous background electrolyte and was found to be free of the detrimental peak tailing of the acridine orange-based fluorophore that was caused by adsorption on the inner wall of the fused silica capillary. Bovine serum albumin was labeled with excess of the designed amine reactive reagent and the lowest concentration at which the tagged bovine serum albumin was tested was 15 nM. Chicken ovalbumin was also labeled with FL-CA-PFP and analyzed by capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) with LIF detection. The pI values of the tagged proteins shifted in the alkaline direction by about 0.02 compared to the pI values of the non-tagged proteins. A tri-functional probe intended to enable selective enrichment and selective detection of a variety of molecules (e.g., natural products, pharmaceuticals, inhibitors, etc.) was also designed and synthetized by combining FL-CA with biotin and an azide group in a "proof-of-principle" level experiment.
In cIEF, the profile of the pH gradient can only be determined with the help of pI markers. A large set of pyrene-based fluorescent pI markers was rationally designed to cover the pI range 3 to 10. To prove the feasibility of the proposed synthetic approach, the subgroup of the pI markers having the greatest structural complexity was synthesized and characterized. The classical zone electrophoretic pI determination methods failed due to severe chromatographic retention of the APTS based pI markers on the capillary wall. Exploratory work was done to design a new pI value determination method that combines the advantages of the immobilized pH gradient technology of the OFFGEL instrument and the carrier-ampholyte-based IEF technology. The method aspects of cIEF have also been improved in this work. The new segmented loading method yielded a more linear pH gradient than the previously known cIEF methods. To exploit a unique property of the newly developed fluorescent pI markers, we used them as pyrene-based ampholytic carbohydrate derivatizing reagents. The pI4 carbohydrate derivatization reagent proved advantageous over 8-aminopyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (APTS): the pI4 conjugates have higher molar absorbance at 488 nm than the APTS conjugates and become detectable in positive ion mode of MS affording better detection sensitivity
Interleukin 10 promoter haplotype is associated with alcoholic liver cirrhosis in Taiwanese patients
AbstractAlcoholic liver cirrhosis is a severe form of alcohol-related liver damage. More than 95% of heavy drinkers develop a fatty liver, but only 35% of them develop cirrhosis. We postulate that genetic factors may play a role in this difference. Genetic polymorphisms of the cytokine genes may influence Kupffer cells cytokine genes expression. In this study, we evaluated the promoter polymorphisms of interleukin (IL) 1β, IL 6, IL 10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and aimed to clarify the association between the polymorphisms and the disease. Forty alcoholic patients with liver cirrhosis and 64 healthy volunteers were included in our investigation. Genotyping on IL 1β –511 T>C, IL 6 –572 G>C, IL 10 –819 C>T, IL 10 –1082 G>A, and TNFα –308 G>A was done. Another 36 patients with recurrent alcoholic pancreatitis were included as an additional control group. Genotyping on IL 10 –819 C>T and IL 10 –1082 G>A was done. The polymorphisms on IL 1 and IL 6 showed no significant association. The p value for TNFα –308 G>A was 0.028 in comparison with healthy volunteers. Although the p value was less than 0.05, it did not reach significance after Bonferroni correction. The p values for IL 10 –819 C>T and IL 10 –1082 G>A were respectively 0.031 and 0.026 in healthy volunteers and 0.028 and 0.023 in the alcoholic pancreatitis group. The results also did not reach significance after Bonferroni correction. Among the participants with the GCC haplotype, healthy volunteers had p = 0.027 (p < 0.05) and an odds ratio (OR) of 0.124 [confidence interval (95%) CI, 0.015–0.997], whereas the alcoholic pancreatitis group had p = 0.023 (p < 0.05) and an OR of 0.106 (95% CI, 0.012–0.912). The odds ratio of people having one ATA haplotype was 6.233 (95% CI, 0.739–52.547) in healthy volunteers and 6.588 (95% CI, 0.727–59.679) in the alcoholic pancreatitis group; the corresponding rate was 10.521 (95% CI, 1.252–88.440) and 12.833 (95% CI 1.408–117.008) for people with two ATA haplotypes. The p values in these groups were 0.031 (p < 0.05) and 0.028 (p < 0.05), respectively. The presence of a GCC haplotype could have protective effect against alcoholic liver disease, whereas the presence of an ATA haplotype could predispose carriers to the disease. The IL 10 promoter haplotype is associated with alcoholic liver cirrhosis in Taiwanese patients
DYNAMICAL EFFECTS OF SPRINT START ON DIFFERENT STARTING BLOCKS
The purpose of this study was to examine the dynamical variables of sprint start in two different starting blocks setups. The ReacTime Personal Systems was used to record the Reaction Time (RT) and the Power of 20 teenaged sprinters (15 males and 5 females) in the sprint start. In addition, the Newtest Powertimer photocells were used to collect subjects’ 0 to 10 metre (T10) performance after the sprint start. The variables were tested by the repeated measures one-way ANOVA by SPSS 19.0 statistical software at a .05 significant level. The results showed that there were better effects on the short starting block (SB) in power generation performance than the long starting block (LB). The athletes can apply short starting block and make adjustments and modifications based on their training conditions
Undiagnosed diabetes mellitus among residents in Taiwanese long-term care facilities: A comparison of fasting glucose, postprandial plasma glucose, and hemoglobin A1c
AbstractBackgroundThe prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is escalating with an aging population, and the chances of diabetic older patients admitted to long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are increased because of DM-related complications. However, undiagnosed DM among LTCF residents is a recognized hidden problem in this setting and may result in adverse outcomes.MethodsIn May 2011, 10 private LTCFs in northern Taipei participated in this study. Trained research nurses reviewed the medical records and performed physical examinations and blood sampling for all participants. Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed, based on the levels of fasting glucose, 2-hour postprandial plasma glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Patients were categorized as having DM if they met the diagnostic cut-offs of the aforementioned criteria.ResultsOne hundred and ninety-nine residents (mean age, 79.6 ± 10.5 years; 52.3% males) participated in this study. They were all moderately/severely disabled (Karnofsky Performance Scale mean score was 50 ± 13). Forty-six (23.1%) residents were diabetic, based on their medical records, or were current users of antidiabetic agents. The prevalence was 29.6% after testing with a mean HbA1c level of 6.9% ± 0.9%. The overall undiagnosed DM rate was 4%, 3.5%, and 4.5%, based on fasting glucose, 2-hour postprandial plasma glucose, and HbA1c criteria, respectively. Diabetic patients had significantly higher serum levels of prealbumin, compared to nondiabetic patients (220.8 ± 45.9 vs. 201.1 ± 62.2 mg/L; p = 0.03), but there were no differences in the levels of hemoglobin, serum albumin, or total cholesterol. Diabetic patients had a significantly higher serum triglyceride level, compared to the nondiabetic patients (1.6 ± 0.7 vs. 1.1 ± 0.5 mmol/L; p < 0.01) and a lower high-density lipoprotein level (1.0 ± 0.3 vs. 1.2 ± 0.3 mmol/L; p < 0.01). Among 43 pharmacologically treated diabetic patients, 65.1% (28/43) of patients were using oral antidiabetic agents and 41.9% (18/43) of patients had been prescribed insulin, whereas 32.6% of the patients were managed by combination therapy.ConclusionThe prevalence of DM among LTCF residents in Taipei was 29.6%, and the undiagnosed rate was no more than 5%, based on fasting glucose, 2-hour postprandial plasma glucose, or HbA1c. Further study is needed for the optimal treatment strategy of DM in LTCFs
Centella asiatica extract protects against amyloid β1–40-induced neurotoxicity in neuronal cells by activating the antioxidative defence system
AbstractCentella asiatica (é›·ĺ…¬ć ą lĂ©i gĹŤng gÄ“n) is a traditional medicinal herb with high antioxidant activity, which decreases amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition in the brain. At the same time, aggregated Aβ-induced oxidative stress is the trigger in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we investigated the ability of C. asiatica ethanol extract (CAE) to protect PC12 and IMR32 cells from Aβ1–40-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and concomitant neurotoxicity. Aggregated Aβ1–40 treatment resulted in reduced cell viability, which can be reversed by cotreatment with 25, 50, and 100 μg/mL CAE. Moreover, CAE eliminated the Aβ1–40-mediated increase in ROS production. Thus, CAE-mediated protection against aggregated Aβ1–40-induced neurotoxicity is attributable to modulation of the antioxidative defense system in cells, including the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and levels of glutathione and glutathione disulfide by CAE. This emphasizes the potential therapeutic and preventive value of CAE in the treatment of AD
