Advances and emerging challenges in cognitive internet-of-things
The evolution of IoT devices and their adoption in new generation intelligent systems has generated a huge demand for wireless bandwidth. This bandwidth problem is further exacerbated by another characteristics of IoT applications, i.e. IoT devices are usually deployed in massive number, thus leading to an awkward scenario that many bandwidth-hungry devices are chasing after the very limited wireless bandwidth within a small geographic area. As such, cognitive radio has received much attention of there search community as an important means for addressing the bandwidth needs of IoT applications. When enabling IoT devices with cognitive functionalities including spectrum sensing, dynamic spectrum accessing, circumstantial perceiving and self-learning, one will also need to fully study other critical issues such as standardization, privacy protection and heterogeneous coexistence. In this paper, we investigate the structural frameworks and potential applications of cognitive IoT. We further discuss the spectrum-based functionalities and heterogeneity for cognitive IoT. Security and privacy issues involved in cognitive IoT are also investigated. Finally, we present the key challenges and future direction of research on cognitiveradio-based IoT networks
Phosphorus bioavailability: a key aspect for conserving this critical animal feed resource with reference to broiler nutrition
Phosphorus (P) is an essential element, and the majority of animal feed phosphate is derived from phosphate rock that is a non-renewable resource. Current global P reserves may be depleted in 50–100 years. This poses the challenge of securing future P supply for the global animal feed industries. Currently, nutritionists formulate diets with substantial safety margins to guarantee that animals do not become P deficient. Excessive dietary P concentrations increase, not only the cost of diets, but also P excretion and pollution of the environment. We contend that understanding P bioavailability is central to the sustainable use of this mineral in animal agriculture. Poultry accounts for approximately 50% of animal feed phosphate consumption worldwide and for this reason we use the meat chicken or broiler as a case study to explore the nuances of P bioavailability. We conclude that, to tackle the challenge of dietary P bioavailability, cooperative research on a global scale is needed to standardise measurement procedures in order to produce a robust and reliable database which can be used by nutritionists to formulate diets to meet the bird’s P requirements precisely. Achievement of this goal will assist endeavours to sustain the global supply of phosphorus
Process optimization for the preparation of oligomycin-loaded folate-conjugated chitosan nanoparticles as a tumor-targeted drug delivery system using a two-level factorial design method
Oligomycin-A (Oli-A), an anticancer drug, was loaded to the folate (FA)-conjugated chitosan as a tumor-targeted drug delivery system for the purpose of overcoming the nonspecific targeting characteristics and the hydrophobicity of the compound. The two-level factorial design (2-LFD) was applied to modeling the preparation process, which was composed of five independent variables, namely FA-conjugated chitosan (FA-CS) concentration, Oli-A concentration, sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) concentration, the mass ratio of FA-CS to TPP, and crosslinking time. The mean particle size (MPS) and the drug loading rate (DLR) of the resulting Oli-loaded FA-CS nanoparticles (FA-Oli-CSNPs) were used as response variables. The interactive effects of the five independent variables on the response variables were studied. The characteristics of the nanoparticles, such as amount of FA conjugation, drug entrapment rate (DER), DLR, surface morphology, and release kinetics properties in vitro were investigated. The FA-Oli-CSNPs with MPS of 182.6 nm, DER of 17.3%, DLR of 58.5%, and zeta potential (ZP) of 24.6 mV were obtained under optimum conditions. The amount of FA conjugation was 45.9 mg/g chitosan. The FA-Oli-CSNPs showed sustained-release characteristics for 576 hours in vitro. The results indicated that FA-Oli-CSNPs obtained as a targeted drug delivery system could be effective in the therapy of leukemia in the future
Temporal and bidirectional association between blood pressure variability and arterial stiffness: Cross-lagged cohort study
BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between blood pressure variability (BPV) and arterial stiffness remains debated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the temporal and bidirectional associations between long-term BPV and arterial stiffness using a cohort design with multiple surveys. METHODS: Participants from the Beijing Health Management Cohort who underwent health examinations from visit 1 (2010-2011) to visit 5 (2018-2019) were enrolled in this study. Long-term BPV was defined as intraindividual variation using the coefficient of variation (CV) and SD. Arterial stiffness was measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). The bidirectional relationship between BPV and arterial stiffness was explored using cross-lagged analysis and linear regression models, with records before and after visit 3 categorized as phase 1 and phase 2, respectively. RESULTS: Of the 1506 participants, who were a mean of 56.11 (SD 8.57) years old, 1148 (76.2%) were male. The cross-lagged analysis indicated that the standardized coefficients of BPV at phase 1 directing to the baPWV level at phase 2 were statistically significant but not vice-versa. The adjusted regression coefficients of the CV were 4.708 (95% CI 0.946-8.470) for systolic blood pressure, 3.119 (95% 0.166-6.073) for diastolic pressure, and 2.205 (95% CI 0.300-4.110) for pulse pressure. The coefficients of the SD were 4.208 (95% CI 0.177-8.239) for diastolic pressure and 4.247 (95% CI 0.448-8.046) for pulse pressure. The associations were predominant in the subgroup with hypertension, but we did not observe any significant association of baPWV level with subsequent BPV indices. CONCLUSIONS: The findings supported a temporal relationship between long-term BPV and arterial stiffness level, especially among people with hypertension

Resource allocation for cache-enabled cloud-based small cell networks
To address the serious challenge of satisfying explosively increasing multimedia content requests from a massive number of users in mobile networks, deploying content caching in base stations to offload network traffic while satisfying content requests locally has been regarded as an effective approach to enhance the network performance. Moreover, content delivery via wireless transmissions in a cache-enabled mobile network needs to be optimized taking the proactive caching policy into consideration. Accordingly, in this paper, we investigate and propose an efficient resource allocation framework for cache-enabled cloud-based small cell networks (C-SCNs) to achieve the benefits of content caching by considering two phases, i.e., content placement and content delivery. In particular, for the content placement phase, we propose a low-complexity distributed popularity-based framework for allocating cache sizes of SBSs to popular contents, in order to offload network traffic and satisfy content requests locally. For the content delivery phase, we propose a low-complexity joint user association and subcarrier-power allocation scheme for min-rate guaranteed content delivery over orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based downlink transmissions. Trace-based simulations and numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes in the cache-enabled C-SCNs
