JFET integration using a foundry SOI photonics platform
We explore the monolithic integration of conventional electronics with SOI photonics using the commercial silicon photonics foundry technology offered by A*STAR's Institute of Microelectronics (IME). This process offers optical waveguide modulators and photodetectors, but was not intended to support transistors. We present the implementation of junction field effect transistors (JFETs) integrated with optical waveguides and photodetectors. A simple SPICE model is developed for the JFETs based on the available ion implant parameters, and the geometry feature size allowed by the technology's layout rules. We have demonstrated the monolithic integration of photonics and electronics circuits. This work could be useful for application in waveguide sensors and optical telecommunications
The yield of head CT in syncope: a pilot study
Although head CT is often routinely performed in emergency department (ED) patients with syncope, few studies have assessed its value
A first-principles study of MgB2 (0001) surfaces
We report self-consistent {\it ab initio} calculations of structural and
electronic properties for the B- and Mg-terminated MgB (0001) surfaces.
We employ ultra-soft pseudopotentials and plane wave basis sets within the
generalized gradient approximation. The surface relaxations are found to be
small for both B- and Mg-terminated surfaces. For the B-terminated surface,
both B and surface bands appear, while only one B
surface band exists near the Fermi level for the Mg-terminated surface. The
superconductivity of the MgB surfaces is discussed. The work function is
predicted to be 5.95 and 4.25 eV for the B- and Mg-terminated surfaces
respectively. The simulated scanning tunneling microscopy images of the
surfaces are not sensitive to the sign and value of the bias voltages, but
depend strongly on the tip-sample distance. An image reversal is predicted for
the Mg-terminated surface.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Revte
Structural and superconducting properties of MgBBe
We prepared MgBBe (, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.6) samples where
B is substituted with Be. MgB structure is maintained up to .
In-plane and inter-plane lattice constants were found to decrease and increase,
respectively. Superconducting transition temperature decreases with
. We found that the decrease is correlated with in-plane contraction
but is insensitive to carrier doping, which is consistent with other
substitution studies such as MgAlB and MgBC.
Implication of this work is discussed in terms of the 2D nature of -band.Comment: 3 pages,4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Has the nonlinear Meissner effect been observed?
We examine recent high-precision experimental data on the magnetic field,
, dependence of the penetration depth in
(YBCO) for several field directions in the
plane. In a new theoretical analysis that incorporates the effects of
orthorhombic symmetry, we show that the data at sufficiently high magnetic
fields and low temperatures are in quantitative agreement with the theoretical
predictions of the nonlinear Meissner effect.Comment: 4 text pages plus 3 postscript figure
Anisotropic superconductivity mediated by phonons in layered compounds with weak screening effect
Anisotropic pairing interactions mediated by phonons are examined in layer
systems. It is shown that the screening effects become weaker when the layer
spacing increases. Then the anisotropic components of the pairing interactions
increase with the screening length since the momentum dependence changes. As a
result, various types of anisotropic superconductivity occur depending on the
parameter region. For example, p-wave superconductivity occurs when the
short-range part of Coulomb repulsion is strong and the layer spacing is large.
Two kinds of inter-layer pairing may occur when the layer spacing is not too
large. Although the phonon contribution to the d-wave pairing interaction is
weaker than the p-wave interaction, it increases with the layer spacing.
Relevance of the present results to organic superconductors, high-T_c cuprates,
and Sr_2RuO_4 is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, (Latex, revtex.sty, epsf.sty
Suppression of Superconducting Critical Current Density by Small Flux Jumps in Thin Films
By doing magnetization measurements during magnetic field sweeps on thin
films of the new superconductor , it is found that in a low temperature
and low field region small flux jumps are taking place. This effect strongly
suppresses the central magnetization peak leading to reduced nominal
superconducting critical current density at low temperatures. A borderline for
this effect to occur is determined on the field-temperature (H-T) phase
diagram. It is suggested that the small size of the flux jumps in films is due
to the higher density of small defects and the relatively easy thermal
diffusion in thin films in comparison with bulk samples.Comment: 7 figures Phys. Rev. B accepted scheduled issue: 01 Feb 200
Scaling Behavior of Anomalous Hall Effect and Longitudinal Nonlinear Response in High-Tc Superconductors
Based on existing theoretical model and by considering our longitudinal
nonlinear response function, we derive a nonliear equation in which the mixed
state Hall resistivity can be expressed as an analytical function of magnetic
field, temperature and applied current. This equation enables one to compare
quantitatively the experimental data with theoretical model. We also find some
new scaling relations of the temperature and field dependency of Hall
resistivity. The comparison between our theoretical curves and experimental
data shows a fair agreement.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
