A Review on Li Zhizao’s Scientific Translation and His Contribution to the Chinese Science Development

During the period from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty, some Chinese scholars began to translate western science and culture. Li Zhizao, an excellent Chinese scientist, not only introduced a lot about western religion to the Chinese people, but also translated a great deal of western scientific knowledge. He committed himself to the introduction of western science and translation of western books, greatly promoting the advance of science in China. This paper first reviews the previous studies on scientific translation during the period from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty, and the previous studies on Li Zhizao, then holds that: (1) the previous studies mainly focus on the contribution of Li Zhizao as a scholar or translator in general, rather than his specific translation activities and his translation contribution to the Chinese science development; (2) the previous studies are relatively scattered and need to go deeper. Therefore, a systematic and in-depth study of Li Zhizao’s translation needs to be made

A Study on the Translation of Culture-Loaded Words in the Movie Ne Zha From the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory

This paper mainly introduces the theory of functional equivalence and its application in translating culture-loaded words into English in the movie subtitles. It takes the theory of functional equivalence as the guideline, and analyzes the translation of culture-loaded words in Chinese movie Ne Zha. It studies the specific translation strategies of culture-loaded words, and tries to apply the theory of functional equivalence to guide the translation of culture-loaded words. This paper will try to come up with a reference version and some suggestions for translation of culture-loaded words, with the purpose of improving the translation condition of culture-loaded words to promote China’s culture transmission, strengthening China’s cultural soft power and speeding up China’s cultural exchanges with foreign countries

A Study on Benjamin Hobson’s Contribution to the Translation of Western Medicine in Modern China

Benjamin Hobson is a British medical missionary who came to China in the Qing Dynasty. Living in China for nearly twenty years, Hobson had quite a few translation works published, and he was not only the first one who systematically translated various kinds of medicine theories into Chinese but also the pioneer of creating medical terms in Chinese. This paper first attempts to make a thorough inquiry into Hobson’s medical translation practice and his views on translation, and then points out that Hobson’s major contributions to the translation of western medicine in modern China are that his medical translation promoted the popularization of western medicine in China, that the publication of Treatise on Physiology set a milestone of translating medicine works for modern China to learn from the West, and that his compilation of A Medical Vocabulary in English and Chinese laid the foundation for the Chinese translation of modern medicine terminology.

John Fryer’s Contribution to Standardization of Translated Scientific Terminology in Modern China

John Fryer was a British missionary in the late Qing Dynasty who came to China and was employed by The Translation Department of Kiangnan Arsenal. He has been engaged in the translation work for over 28 years, not only having translated a great deal of Western scientific works into Chinese, but also having contributed greatly to the standardization of the scientific terminology translation. This paper first attempts to probe into Fryer’s scientific translation practice and his translation ideas, and then points out that Fryer’s major contributions to the standardization of the scientific terminology translation in Modern China are that the magazine Ko-chih-hui-pien he established had helped greatly with the popularization of modern scientific knowledge, that the book Mirroring the Origins of Chemistry he translated had paved the way for the term translation of modern chemical elements, and that various lists of bilingual technical terms he made, to a great degree, had standardized the translation of scientific terminology
