DNA fragmentation index (DFI) as a measure of sperm quality and fertility in mice.
Although thousands of genetically modified mouse strains have been cryopreserved by sperm freezing, the likelihood of cryorecovery success cannot be accurately predicted using conventional sperm parameters. The objective of the present study was to assess the extent to which measurement of a sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) can predict sperm quality and fertility after cryopreservation. Using a modified TUNEL assay, we measured and correlated the DFI of frozen-thawed sperm from 83 unique mutant mouse strains with sperm count, motility and morphology. We observed a linear inverse correlation between sperm DFI and sperm morphology and motility. Further, sperm DFI was significantly higher from males with low sperm counts compared to males with normal sperm counts (P < 0.0001). Additionally, we found that viable embryos derived using sperm from males with high DFI (62.7 ± 7.2% for IVF and 73.3 ± 8.1% for ICSI) failed to litter after embryo transfer compared to embryos from males with low DFI (20.4 ± 7.9% for IVF and 28.1 ± 10.7 for ICSI). This study reveals that measurement of DFI provides a simple, informative and reliable measure of sperm quality and can accurately predict male mouse fertility
Holographic entanglement of purification for thermofield double states and thermal quench
We explore the properties of holographic entanglement of purification (EoP)
for two disjoint strips in the Schwarzschild-AdS black brane and the Vaidya-AdS
black brane spacetimes. For two given strips on the same boundary of
Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime, there is an upper bound of the separation beyond
which the holographic EoP will always vanish no matter how wide the strips are.
In the case that two strips are in the two boundaries of the spacetime
respectively, we find that the holographic EoP exists only when the strips are
wide enough. If the width is finite, the EoP can be nonzero in a finite time
region. For thermal quench case, we find that the equilibrium time of
holographic EoP is only sensitive to the width of strips, while that of the
holographic mutual information is sensitive not only to the width of strips but

Effects of momentum-dependent nuclear potential on two-nucleon correlation functions and light cluster production in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions
Using an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model, we study the
effects due to the momentum dependence of isoscalar nuclear potential as well
as that of symmetry potential on two-nucleon correlation functions and light
cluster production in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions induced by
neutron-rich nuclei. It is found that both observables are affected
significantly by the momentum dependence of nuclear potential, leading to a
reduction of their sensitivity to the stiffness of nuclear symmetry energy.
However, the t/He ratio remains a sensitive probe of the density
dependence of nuclear symmetry energy.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure
Residential racial composition and black-white obesity risks: differential effects of neighborhood social and built environment
pre-printThis study investigates the association between neighborhood racial composition and adult obesity risks by race and gender, and explores whether neighborhood social and built environment mediates the observed protective or detrimental effects of racial composition on obesity risks. Cross-sectional data from the 2006 and 2008 Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Health Survey are merged with census-tract profiles from 2005-2009 American Community Survey and Geographic Information System-based built-environment data. The analytical sample includes 12,730 whites and 4,290 blacks residing in 953 census tracts. Results from multilevel analysis suggest that black concentration is associated with higher obesity risks only for white women, and this association is mediated by lower neighborhood social cohesion and socioeconomic status (SES) in black-concentrated neighborhoods. After controlling for neighborhood SES, black concentration and street connectivity are associated with lower obesity risks for white men. No association between black concentration and obesity is found for blacks. The findings point to the intersections of race and gender in neighborhood effects on obesity risks, and highlight the importance of various aspects of neighborhood social and built environment and their complex roles in obesity prevention by socio-demographic groups
Physical activity and mortality among middle-aged and older adults in the United States
pre-printBackground-Physical activity (PA) has been routinely linked to lower all-cause mortality, yet extant research in the United States is primarily based on non-representative samples. Evidence is scant on the relative and independent merits of leisure-time (LTPA) versus non-leisure-time (NLTPA) activities and how the PA-mortality link may vary across racial-ethnic-gender groups. Methods-Data were from Health and Retirement Study which began in 1992 collecting data on individuals aged 51 to 61 years who were subsequently surveyed once every two years. The present study assessed group-specific effects of LTPA and NLTPA measured in 1992 on mortality that occurred during the 1992-2008 follow-up period. Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed to examine the PA-mortality link. Results-Net of a wide range of controls, both LTPA and NLTPA showed a gradient negative relation with mortality. No gender-PA interaction effects were evident. Some interaction effects of PA with race-ethnicity were found but they were weak and inconsistent. The mortality reduction effects of PA seemed robust across racial-ethnic-gender groups. Conclusions-Regardless of personal background, PA is a major health promoting factor and should be encouraged in aging populations. More research is needed to assess relative merits of different types and domains of PA
Local Cyber-physical Attack with Leveraging Detection in Smart Grid
A well-designed attack in the power system can cause an initial failure and
then results in large-scale cascade failure. Several works have discussed power
system attack through false data injection, line-maintaining attack, and
line-removing attack. However, the existing methods need to continuously attack
the system for a long time, and, unfortunately, the performance cannot be
guaranteed if the system states vary. To overcome this issue, we consider a new
type of attack strategy called combinational attack which masks a line-outage
at one position but misleads the control center on line outage at another
position. Therefore, the topology information in the control center is
interfered by our attack. We also offer a procedure of selecting the vulnerable
lines of its kind. The proposed method can effectively and continuously deceive
the control center in identifying the actual position of line-outage. The
system under attack will be exposed to increasing risks as the attack
continuously. Simulation results validate the efficiency of the proposed attack
