Lyapunov vs. Geometrical Stability Analysis of the Kepler and the Restricted Three Body Problem
In this letter we show that although the application of standard Lyapunov
analysis predicts that completely integrable Kepler motion is unstable, the
geometrical analysis of Horwitz et al [1] predicts the observed stability. This
seems to us to provide evidence for both the incompleteness of the standard
Lyapunov analysis and the strength of the geometrical analysis. Moreover, we
apply this approach to the three body problem in which the third body is
restricted to move on a circle of large radius which induces an adiabatic time
dependent potential on the second body. This causes the second body to move in
a very interesting and intricate but periodic trajectory; however, the standard
Lyapunov analysis, as well as methods based on the parametric variation of
curvature associated with the Jacobi metric, incorrectly predict chaotic
behavior. The geometric approach predicts the correct stable motion in this

Analysis of the Early-time Optical Spectra of SN 2011fe in M101
The nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2011fe in M101 (cz = 241 km s^(–1)) provides a unique opportunity to study the early evolution of a "normal" SN Ia, its compositional structure, and its elusive progenitor system. We present 18 high signal-to-noise spectra of SN 2011fe during its first month beginning 1.2 days post-explosion and with an average cadence of 1.8 days. This gives a clear picture of how various line-forming species are distributed within the outer layers of the ejecta, including that of unburned material (C+O). We follow the evolution of C II absorption features until they diminish near maximum light, showing overlapping regions of burned and unburned material between ejection velocities of 10,000 and 16,000 km s^(–1). This supports the notion that incomplete burning, in addition to progenitor scenarios, is a relevant source of spectroscopic diversity among SNe Ia. The observed evolution of the highly Doppler-shifted O I λ7774 absorption features detected within 5 days post-explosion indicates the presence of O I with expansion velocities from 11,500 to 21,000 km s^(–1). The fact that some O I is present above C II suggests that SN 2011fe may have had an appreciable amount of unburned oxygen within the outer layers of the ejecta
Climate change and recent genetic flux in populations of Drosophila robusta
BACKGROUND: Studied since the early 1940's, chromosomal polymorphisms in the deciduous woods species Drosophila robusta have been characterized by well-defined latitudinal, longitudinal, and elevational clines, but – until at least ten years ago – stable, local population frequencies. Recent biogeographical analyses indicate that D. robusta invaded North America from southeast Asia and has persisted in eastern temperate forests for at least 20–25 my without speciating. The abundant chromosome polymorphisms found across the range of D. robusta are thus likely to be relatively ancient, having accumulated over many well known climatic cycles in North America. Sufficient long-term data are now available such that we can now gauge the rate of these evolutionary changes in natural populations due to environmental change. RESULTS: Recent local collections have revealed significant changes in the frequencies of several chromosomal forms. New data presented here extend the range of these changes to six states, three in the northeastern United States and three west of the Mississippi River. These data reinforce recent directional changes in which the frequencies of three gene arrangements have reached percentage levels typical of distant southern populations consistent with regional climatic changes. Another gene arrangement has been steadily decreasing in frequency at a number of the sites studied. Meteorological records from 1945 to 2003 indicate temperature increases at all study sites, particularly average minimum air temperatures. CONCLUSIONS: Observation of parallel genetic flux suggests that these long-term temporal frequency shifts in widely disparate populations of D. robusta are evolutionary responses to environmental change. Since these chromosomes are known to be sensitive to ambient temperature, regional climatic shifts associated with global warming are likely to be responsible
Discrimination of the Healthy and Sick Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System by a New Wavelet Analysis of Heartbeat Intervals
We demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish with a complete certainty
between healthy subjects and patients with various dysfunctions of the cardiac
nervous system by way of multiresolutional wavelet transform of RR intervals.
We repeated the study of Thurner et al on different ensemble of subjects. We
show that reconstructed series using a filter which discards wavelet
coefficients related with higher scales enables one to classify individuals for
which the method otherwise is inconclusive. We suggest a delimiting diagnostic
value of the standard deviation of the filtered, reconstructed RR interval time
series in the range of (for the above mentioned filter), below

Topological model of soap froth evolution with deterministic T2-processes
We introduce a topological model for the evolution of 2d soap froth. The
topological rearrangements (T2 processes) are deterministic (unlike the
standard stochastic model): the final topology depends on the areas of the
neighboring cells. The new model gives agreement with experiments in the
transient regime, where the previous models failed qualitatively, and also
