Theory of the Circular Diffraction Antenna
The circular diffraction antenna consists of a coaxial wave guide fitted with an infinite‐plane conducting baffle, and open to free space. An equivalent circuit description, appropriate to principal‐mode propagation in the coaxial region, is investigated theoretically. Variational expressions for the circuit parameters are derived, and used for accurate numerical evaluation
X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564: RXTE Spectral Observations
Excellent coverage of the 1998 outburst of the X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564 was
provided by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. XTE J1550-564 exhibited an intense
(6.8 Crab) flare on 1998 September 19 (UT), making it the brightest new X-ray
source observed with RXTE. We present a spectral analysis utilizing 60
Proportional Counter Array spectra from 2.5-20 keV spanning 71 days, and a
nearly continuous All Sky Monitor light curve. The spectra were fit to a model
including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. XTE J1550-564 is
observed in the very high, high/soft, and intermediate canonical outburst

Risky Decision Making Assessed With the Gambling Task in Adults with HIV
Decision making was assessed using a laboratory gambling task in 67 adults with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV+) and in 19 HIV-seronegative (HIV−) control participants. Neurocognitive test performance across several domains was also analyzed to examine potential cognitive mechanisms of gambling task performance. As predicted, the HIV+ group performed worse on the gambling task, indicating greater risky decision making. Specifically, the HIV+ group selected more cards from the “risky” or disadvantageous deck that included relatively large payoffs but infrequent large penalties. The control group also selected such risky cards but quickly learned to avoid them. Exploratory analyses also indicated that in the HIV+ group, but not in the control group, gambling task performance was correlated with Stroop Interference performance and long delay free recall on the California Verbal Learning Test, suggesting the role of inhibitory processes and verbal memory in the poorer gambling task performance in HIV. These findings indicate the usefulness of the gambling task as a laboratory tool to examine risky decision making and cognition in the HIV population
Sensation Seeking and Visual Selective Attention in Adults with HIV/AIDS
The association between sensation seeking and visual selective attention was examined in 31 adults with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Sensation seeking was measured with Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale Form V (SSS-V). Selective attention was assessed with a perceptual span task, where a target letter-character must be identified in a quickly presented array of nontarget letter-characters. As predicted, sensation seeking was strongly associated (R2 = .229) with perceptual span performance in the array size 12 condition, where selective attention demands were greatest, but not in the easier conditions. The Disinhibition, Boredom Susceptibility, and Experience Seeking subscales of the SSS-V were associated with span performance. It is argued that personality factors such as sensation seeking may play a significant role in selective attention and related cognitive abilities in HIV positive adults. Furthermore, sensation seeking differences might explain certain inconsistencies in the HIV neuropsychology literature
GX 9+9: Variability of the X-Ray Orbital Modulation
Results of observations of the Galactic bulge X-ray source GX 9+9 by the
All-Sky Monitor (ASM) and Proportional Counter Array (PCA) onboard the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer are presented. The ASM results show that the 4.19 hour
X-ray periodicity first reported by Hertz and Wood in 1987 was weak or not
detected for most of the mission prior to late 2004, but then became strong and
remained strong for approximately 2 years after which it weakened considerably.
When the modulation at the 4.19 hour period is strong, it appears in folded
light curves as an intensity dip over slightly less than 30% of a cycle and is
distinctly nonsinusoidal. A number of PCA observations of GX 9+9 were performed
before the appearance of strong modulation; two were performed in 2006 during
the epoch of strong modulation. Data obtained from the earlier PCA observations
yield at best limited evidence of the presence of phase-dependent intensity
changes, while the data from the later observations confirm the presence of
flux minima with depths and phases compatible with those apparent in folded ASM
light curves. Light curves from a Chandra observation of GX 9+9 performed in
the year 2000 prior to the start of strong modulation show the possible
presence of shallow dips at the predicted times. Optical observations performed
in 2006 while the X-ray modulation was strong do not show an increase in the
degree of modulation at the 4.19 hour period. Implications of the changes in

Complete RXTE Spectral Observations of the Black Hole X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564
We report on the X-ray spectral behavior of the exceptionally bright X-ray
nova XTE J1550-564 during its 1998-99 outburst. Our study is based on 209
pointed observations using the PCA and HEXTE instruments onboard the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer spanning 250 days and covering the entire double-peaked
eruption that occurred from 1998 September until 1999 May. The spectra are fit
to a model including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. The
source is observed in the very high and high/soft outburst states of black hole
X-ray novae. During the very high state, when the power-law component dominated
the spectrum, the inner disk radius is observed to vary by more than an order
of magnitude; the radius decreased by a factor of 16 in one day during a 6.8
Crab flare. If the larger of these observed radii is taken to be the last
stable orbit, then the smaller observed radius would imply that the inner edge
of the disk is inside the event horizon! However, we conclude that the apparent
variations of the inner disk radius observed during periods of increased
power-law emission are probably caused by the failure of the multicolor
disk/power-law model; the actual physical radius of the inner disk may remain
fairly constant. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the observed
inner disk radius remains approximately constant over 120 days in the high
state, when the power-law component is weak, even though the disk flux and
total flux vary by an order of magnitude. The mass of the black hole inferred
by equating the approximately constant inner disk radius observed in the
high/soft state with the last stable orbit for a Schwarzschild black hole is

Elements of attention in HIV-infected adults: Evaluation of an existing model
Because of the multifactorial nature of neuropsychological tests, attention remains poorly defined from a neuropsychological perspective, and conclusions made regarding attention across studies may be limited due to the different nature of the measures used. Thus, a more definitive schema for this neurocognitive domain is needed. We assessed the applicability of Mirsky and Duncan\u27s (2001) neuropsychological model of attention to a cohort of 104 HIV+ adults. Our analysis resulted in a five-factor structure similar to that of previous studies, which explained 74.5% of the variance. However, based on the psychometric characteristics of the measures comprising each factor, we offer an alternative interpretation of the factors. Findings also indicate that one factor, which is generally not assessed in clinical neuropsychology settings, may be more predictive of real-world behaviors (such as medication adherence) than those composed of traditional measures. Suggestions for further research in this important area are discussed
Manacled to Identity: Cosmopolitanism, Class, and ‘The Culture Concept’ in Stephen Crane
This article begins with a close reading of Stephen Crane’s short story ‘Manacled’ from 1900, which situates this rarely considered short work within the context of contemporary debates about realism. I then proceed to argue that many of the debates raised by the tale have an afterlife in our own era of American literary studies, which has frequently focused on questions of ‘identity’ and ‘culture’ in its reading of realism and naturalism to the exclusion of the importance of cosmopolitan discourses of diffusion and exchange across national borders. I then offer a brief reading of Crane’s novel George’s Mother, which follows Walter Benn Michaels in suggesting that the recent critical attention paid to particularities of cultural difference in American studies have come to conflate ideas of class and social position with ideas of culture in ways that have ultimately obscured the presence of genuine historical inequalities in US society. In order to challenge this critical commonplace, I situate Crane’s work within a history of transatlantic cosmopolitanism associated with the ideas of Franz Boas and Matthew Arnold to demonstrate the ways in which Crane’s narratives sought out an experience of the universal within their treatments of the particular
