    Female Convict Scorpion:Production Context, Gender Politics, and Cinematic Excesses in a Japanese Women-in-Prison Film Series

    This article focuses on Female Convict Scorpion, a Japanese women-in-prison film series (1972-1973), which exemplifies studio-produced exploitation cinema. The series is influenced by the contemporaneous yakuza cycle and its anti-authoritarian social realist agenda. Produced during a time of rapid political-economic-social change in the country, the Female Convict Scorpion series combines exploitative content—the display of nudity, violence, and sensational subjects—with an underlying feminist sensibility, a mixture that embraces the ambiguities of commercial genre cinema. Through close textual analysis, this research explains the contradictions in this women-in-prison series by 1) providing evidence of the female gaze and the subversive narrative tropes, which reveals the feminist subtext in these films, and 2) examining the stylistic and narrative effects of cinematic excesses. This article, thus, re-evaluates these popular genre films as in a time capsule, documenting the significance of their expression of gender politics in 1970s Japan through the distinctive production context and presentation of cinematic excesses

    China’s iGeneration focuses on the filmmakers and films that have emerged since 2001 (year of China’s accession to WTO, the World Trade Organization) and therefore signals a paradigm shift from the Sixth or Urban Generation filmmakers, such as Wang Xiaoshuai and Jia Zhangke, who debuted in the 1990s (see Zhang). The collection moves away from mainstream cinema and the domination of the auteurist approach to consider a range of visual productions, such as films made by activists, documentaries and online exhibitions. Chris Berry’s Introduction frames the collection perfectly when he contrasts the nostalgia for celluloid in the West with the embrace of digital in China, which signals a shift towards thinking about contemporary cinema as Screen Studies (vii)

    Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Attitude Towards Outdoor Advertising in Internet Era

    Outdoor advertising has had very long history. Inthis internet era, it is interesting to investigate whether outdoorad will fade out or not. This paper compares the attitudes towardoutdoor ad with Internet ad. Moreover, it examines crossculturaldifferences in attitudes toward outdoor advertising andinvestigates the effects of different belief factors on consumerattitudes. Data were collected from university students in China,Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. The results show that HongKong and Chinese respondents held the most favourableattitudes toward outdoor advertising while UK respondents heldthe least favourable. Furthermore, the respondents from thethree areas had more favourable attitudes toward outdooradvertising compared with Internet advertising. The results alsosuggest that the advertisers should consider seriously thespending on outdoor advertising which is still favourable in theinternet era

    Assay of pleural fluid interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma in the diagnosis and outcome correlation of tuberculous effusion

    AbstractObjective: To assess the usefulness of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in the diagnosis and prediction of outcome of pleural tuberculosis.Patients and methods: Pleural fluid from 32 TB and 34 non-TB patients was sent for assay of IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ. Clinical parameters at presentation and residual pleural scarring at completion of treatment were assessed for pleural TB cases.Results: The pleural fluid levels of IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ in TB patients were significantly higher than those with non-TB effusions (P values of <0.001, 0.018 and <0.001, respectively by independent t-test). Utility of these cytokines for diagnosis of pleural TB was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The cut-off values for IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ determined in this analysis were 4000, 4 and 60pg/ml respectively, and their sensitivity and specificity were 90.6% and 76.5%, 90.6% and 79.4%, 100% and 100%, respectively. The pretreatment pleural fluid IL-6 levels had a positive correlation with the number of febrile days after treatment (Pearson correlation test: r=0.60, P=0.009). A negative correlation was found between the percentage reduction in pleural fluid cytokines after 2 weeks treatment and the extent of residual pleural scarring (IL-6: r=–0.62, P=0.041; TNF-α: r=–0.65, P=0.030; IFN-γ: r=–0.83, P=0.002).Conclusion: Pleural fluid IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ assays are useful in the diagnosis of pleural TB. The initial IL-6 level correlates with the number of febrile days. The percentage change of cytokines after 2 weeks of treatment also helps to predict residual pleural scarring

    Photo-reactive charge trapping memory based on lanthanide complex

    Traditional utilization of photo-induced excitons is popularly but restricted in the fields of photovoltaic devices as well as photodetectors, and efforts on broadening its function have always been attempted. However, rare reports are available on organic field effect transistor (OFET) memory employing photo-induced charges. Here, we demonstrate an OFET memory containing a novel organic lanthanide complex Eu(tta)&lt;sub&gt;3&lt;/sub&gt; ppta (Eu(tta)&lt;sub&gt;3&lt;/sub&gt; = Europium(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, ppta = 2-phenyl-4,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazine), in which the photo-induced charges can be successfully trapped and detrapped. The luminescent complex emits intense red emission upon ultraviolet (UV) light excitation and serves as a trapping element of holes injected from the pentacene semiconductor layer. Memory window can be significantly enlarged by light-assisted programming and erasing procedures, during which the photo-induced excitons in the semiconductor layer are separated by voltage bias. The enhancement of memory window is attributed to the increasing number of photo-induced excitons by the UV light. The charges are stored in this luminescent complex for at least 10&lt;sup&gt;4&lt;/sup&gt;s after withdrawing voltage bias. The present study on photo-assisted novel memory may motivate the research on a new type of light tunable charge trapping photo-reactive memory devices

    Identification of microbial community in the urban environment: The concordance between conventional culture and nanopore 16S rRNA sequencing

    IntroductionMicrobes in the built environment have been implicated as a source of infectious diseases. Bacterial culture is the standard method for assessing the risk of exposure to pathogens in urban environments, but this method only accounts for &lt;1% of the diversity of bacteria. Recently, full-length 16S rRNA gene analysis using nanopore sequencing has been applied for microbial evaluations, resulting in a rise in the development of long-read taxonomic tools for species-level classification. Regarding their comparative performance, there is, however, a lack of information.MethodsHere, we aim to analyze the concordance of the microbial community in the urban environment inferred by multiple taxonomic classifiers, including ARGpore2, Emu, Kraken2/Bracken and NanoCLUST, using our 16S-nanopore dataset generated by MegaBLAST, as well as assess their abilities to identify culturable species based on the conventional culture results.ResultsAccording to our results, NanoCLUST was preferred for 16S microbial profiling because it had a high concordance of dominant species and a similar microbial profile to MegaBLAST, whereas Kraken2/Bracken, which had similar clustering results as NanoCLUST, was also desirable. Second, for culturable species identification, Emu with the highest accuracy (81.2%) and F1 score (29%) for the detection of culturable species was suggested.DiscussionIn addition to generating datasets in complex communities for future benchmarking studies, our comprehensive evaluation of the taxonomic classifiers offers recommendations for ongoing microbial community research, particularly for complex communities using nanopore 16S rRNA sequencing

    Concomitant Hepatorenal Dysfunction and Malnutrition in Valvular Heart Surgery:Long-Term Prognostic Implications for Death and Heart Failure

    BACKGROUND: Strategies to improve long-term prediction of heart failure and death in valvular surgery are urgently needed because of an increasing number of procedures globally. This study sought to report the prevalence, changes, and prognostic implications of concomitant hepatorenal dysfunction and malnutrition in valvular surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 909 patients undergoing valvular surgery, 3 groups were defined based on hepatorenal function (the modified model for end-stage liver disease excluding international normalized ratio score) and nutritional status (Controlling Nutritional Status score): normal hepatorenal function and nutrition (normal), hepatorenal dysfunction or malnutrition alone (mild), and concomitant hepatorenal dysfunction and malnutrition (severe). Overall, 32%, 46%, and 19% of patients were classified into normal, mild, and severe groups, respectively. Over a 4.1-year median follow-up, mild and severe groups in-curred a higher risk of mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 3.17 [95% CI, 1.40–7.17] and HR, 9.30 [95% CI, 4.09– 21.16], respectively), cardiovascular death (subdistribution HR, 3.29 [95% CI, 1.14– 9.52] and subdistribution HR, 9.29 [95% CI, 3.09– 27.99]), heart failure hospitalization (subdistribution HR, 2.11 [95% CI, 1.25– 3.55] and subdistribution HR, 3.55 [95% CI, 2.04– 6.16]), and adverse outcomes (HR, 2.11 [95% CI, 1.25– 3.55] and HR, 3.55 [95% CI, 2.04– 6.16]). Modified model for end-stage liver disease excluding international normalized ratio and controlling nutritional status scores improved the predictive ability of European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (area under the curve: 0.80 versus 0.73, P<0.001) and Society of Thoracic Surgeons score (area under the curve: 0.79 versus 0.72, P=0.004) for all-cause mortality. One year following surgery (n=707), patients with persistent concomitant hepatorenal dysfunction and malnutrition (severe) experienced worse outcomes than those without.  CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant hepatorenal dysfunction and malnutrition was frequent and strongly linked to heart failure and mortality in valvular surgery

    Gene Expression Profiling on the Molecular Action of Danshen-Gegen Formula in a Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial of Postmenopausal Women with Hypercholesterolemia

    The Danshen-Gegen formula (DG) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula which has long been used to treat cardiovascular disease. DG was found to be a cardiovascular tonic in our recent research. However, a comprehensive investigation of the molecular mechanism of DG in cardiovascular disease has not been performed. The aim of this study was to clarify the transcriptional profiling of genes modulated by DG on postmenopausal women by using DNAmicroarray technology. We obtained 29 whole blood samples both from DG-treated and placebo-treated subjects. Blood lipid profile and intima-media thickness (IMT) were measured. Affymetrix GeneChip was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs), followed by validation by the real-time PCR method. The results showed that DG-treated group has a significant improvement in IMT and lipid profile as compared to placebo-treated group. For the genomic study, the DG-treated group has a higher number of DEGs identified as compared to the placebo-treated group. Two important biological processes of “regulation of systemic arterial blood pressure by hormone” and “regulation of smooth muscle proliferation” have been identified by GePS in the DG-treated group. No significant biological process and cellular components were identified in the placebo-treated group. This genomic study on the molecular action of DG in postmenopausal women gathered sufficient molecular targets and pathways to reveal that DG could improve neointima thickening and hypertension
