On the capacities of bipartite Hamiltonians and unitary gates
We consider interactions as bidirectional channels. We investigate the
capacities for interaction Hamiltonians and nonlocal unitary gates to generate
entanglement and transmit classical information. We give analytic expressions
for the entanglement generating capacity and entanglement-assisted one-way
classical communication capacity of interactions, and show that these
quantities are additive, so that the asymptotic capacities equal the
corresponding 1-shot capacities. We give general bounds on other capacities,
discuss some examples, and conclude with some open questions.Comment: V3: extensively rewritten. V4: a mistaken reference to a conjecture

A rocket-borne pulse-height analyzer for energetic particle measurements
The pulse-height analyzer basically resembles a time-sharing multiplexing data-acquisition system which acquires analog data (from energetic particle spectrometers) and converts them into digital code. The PHA simultaneously acquires pulse-height information from the analog signals of the four input channels and sequentially multiplexes the digitized data to a microprocessor. The PHA together with the microprocessor form an on-board real-time data-manipulation system. The system processes data obtained during the rocket flight and reduces the amount of data to be sent back to the ground station. Consequently the data-reduction process for the rocket experiments is speeded up. By using a time-sharing technique, the throughput rate of the microprocessor is increased. Moreover, data from several particle spectrometers are manipulated to share one information channel; consequently, the TM capacity is increased
Remote preparation of quantum states
Remote state preparation is the variant of quantum state teleportation in
which the sender knows the quantum state to be communicated. The original paper
introducing teleportation established minimal requirements for classical
communication and entanglement but the corresponding limits for remote state
preparation have remained unknown until now: previous work has shown, however,
that it not only requires less classical communication but also gives rise to a
trade-off between these two resources in the appropriate setting. We discuss
this problem from first principles, including the various choices one may
follow in the definitions of the actual resources. Our main result is a general
method of remote state preparation for arbitrary states of many qubits, at a
cost of 1 bit of classical communication and 1 bit of entanglement per qubit
sent. In this "universal" formulation, these ebit and cbit requirements are
shown to be simultaneously optimal by exhibiting a dichotomy. Our protocol then
yields the exact trade-off curve for arbitrary ensembles of pure states and
pure entangled states (including the case of incomplete knowledge of the
ensemble probabilities), based on the recently established quantum-classical
trade-off for quantum data compression. The paper includes an extensive
discussion of our results, including the impact of the choice of model on the
resources, the topic of obliviousness, and an application to private quantum
channels and quantum data hiding.Comment: 21 pages plus 2 figures (eps), revtex4. v2 corrects some errors and

Stochastic Reinforcement Learning
In reinforcement learning episodes, the rewards and punishments are often
non-deterministic, and there are invariably stochastic elements governing the
underlying situation. Such stochastic elements are often numerous and cannot be
known in advance, and they have a tendency to obscure the underlying rewards
and punishments patterns. Indeed, if stochastic elements were absent, the same
outcome would occur every time and the learning problems involved could be
greatly simplified. In addition, in most practical situations, the cost of an
observation to receive either a reward or punishment can be significant, and
one would wish to arrive at the correct learning conclusion by incurring
minimum cost. In this paper, we present a stochastic approach to reinforcement
learning which explicitly models the variability present in the learning
environment and the cost of observation. Criteria and rules for learning
success are quantitatively analyzed, and probabilities of exceeding the
observation cost bounds are also obtained.Comment: AIKE 201
New geometries for high spatial resolution hall probes
The Hall response function of symmetric and asymmetric planar Hall effect
devices is investigated by scanning a magnetized tip above a sensor surface
while simultaneously recording the topography and the Hall voltage. Hall sensor
geometries are tailored using a Focused Ion Beam, in standard symmetric and new
asymmetric geometries. With this technique we are able to reduce a single
voltage probe to a narrow constriction 20 times smaller than the other device
dimensions. We show that the response function is peaked above the
constriction, in agreement with numerical simulations. The results suggest a
new way to pattern Hall sensors for enhanced spatial resolution.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic
Adsorption of humic acids and trace metals in natural waters
Studies concerning the interactions between suspended hydrous iron oxide and dissolved humic acids and trace metals are reported. As a major component of dissolved organic matters and its readiness for adsorption at the solid/water interface, humic acids may play a very important role in the organometallic geochemistry of suspended sediments and in determining the fate and distribution of trace metals, pesticides and anions in natural water systems. Most of the solid phases in natural waters contain oxides and hydroxides. The most simple promising theory to describe the interactions of hydrous iron oxide interface is the surface complex formation model. In this model, the adsorptions of humic acids on hydrous iron oxide may be interpreted as complex formation of the organic bases (humic acid oxyanions) with surface Fe ions. Measurements on adsorptions were made in both fresh water and seawater. Attempts have been made to fit our data to Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Adsorption equilibrium constants were determined
Prescription for experimental determination of the dynamics of a quantum black box
We give an explicit prescription for experimentally determining the evolution
operators which completely describe the dynamics of a quantum mechanical black
box -- an arbitrary open quantum system. We show necessary and sufficient
conditions for this to be possible, and illustrate the general theory by
considering specifically one and two quantum bit systems. These procedures may
be useful in the comparative evaluation of experimental quantum measurement,
communication, and computation systems.Comment: 6 pages, Revtex. Submitted to J. Mod. Op
Quasinormal Modes of Dirty Black Holes
Quasinormal mode (QNM) gravitational radiation from black holes is expected
to be observed in a few years. A perturbative formula is derived for the shifts
in both the real and the imaginary part of the QNM frequencies away from those
of an idealized isolated black hole. The formulation provides a tool for
understanding how the astrophysical environment surrounding a black hole, e.g.,
a massive accretion disk, affects the QNM spectrum of gravitational waves. We
show, in a simple model, that the perturbed QNM spectrum can have interesting
features.Comment: 4 pages. Published in PR
Financial Crisis and the Comovements of Housing Sub-markets: Do relationships change after a crisis?
This study of the co-movements of the transaction prices and trading volumes reveal that the mean correlation of prices, and trading volumes alike, among different housing sub-markets increases during the market boom. After a financial crisis, the correlations drop dramatically and stay low. The distribution of the correlations changes from skewed to symmetric. All these coincide with the increase in the total variance of prices, as well as the share of the idiosyncratic component in the total variance after the crisis. These findings are consistent to a family of theories which emphasize on “regime switch” in expectation.financial crisis; hedonic pricing; structural break; evolution of valuation; rolling regression
Perturbative Approach to the Quasinormal Modes of Dirty Black Holes
Using a recently developed perturbation theory for uasinormal modes (QNM's),
we evaluate the shifts in the real and imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies
due to a quasi-static perturbation of the black hole spacetime. We show the
perturbed QNM spectrum of a black hole can have interesting features using a
simple model based on the scalar wave equation.Comment: Published in PR
