    Patterning of L10 FePt Nanoparticles with Ultra-High Coercivity for Bit-Patterned Media

    L1(0)-ordered FePt nanoparticles (NPs) with ultra-high coercivity were directly prepared from a new metallopolyyne using a one-step pyrolysis method. The chemical ordering, morphology and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized FePt NPs have been studied. Magnetic measurements show the coercivity of these FePt NPs is as high as 3.6 T. Comparison of NPs synthesized under the Ar and Ar/H-2 atmospheres shows that the presence of H-2 in the annealing environment influences the nucleation and promotes the growth of L1(0)-FePt NPs.     Intra-articular injection of an antioxidant formulation did not improve structural degeneration in a rat model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis

    Background/objective: Oxidative stress plays an important role in osteoarthritis (OA), causing inflammation and matrix degradation in joints. Previous studies have shown that antioxidants such as quercetin and vitamin C are potential candidates for treating OA. We aimed to determine whether a formulation of quercetin and vitamin C, together with an iron chelator, could retard OA progression in a post-traumatic OA rat model. Methods: Twelve rats received anterior cruciate ligament transection for OA induction. At 20 weeks postoperation, weekly intra-articular injection of 50 μL of either saline or a formulation of quercetin dehydrate, sodium-L-ascorbate, and deferoxamine mesylate was given consecutively for 4 weeks (n=5). Gait analysis was performed at pretreatment, and at 1 week and 5 weeks post-treatment. Microcomputed tomography scanning and histological scoring were performed at 5 weeks post-treatment. Results: Gait analysis showed that intra-articular injections of antioxidant formulation did not improve pain-associated Limb Idleness Index over time (p=0.449, Friedman test). However, at 5 weeks post-treatment, the treatment group exhibited a significantly lower Limb Idleness Index than the control group (p=0.047, Mann–Whitney U test). At 5 weeks post-treatment, microcomputed tomography analysis revealed that there was no difference in any parameter between the treatment and control groups (p>0.05, Student t test). Severe OA histopathological changes were found in both groups. The Osteoarthritis Research Society International scores of the treatment and control groups were 20 (range, 20–26) and 20 (range, 9–26), respectively (p=0.382, Mann–Whitney U test). Conclusion: Intra-articular injection of an antioxidant formulation containing quercetin, vitamin C, and deferoxamine did not retard OA progression in advanced-stage OA. Future studies should aim to determine whether giving antioxidants in early OA, with prolonged drug retention, would be effective in retarding OA progression

    Joint Effects of Multiple UV Filters on Zebrafish Embryo Development

    The widespread use of UV filters has resulted in significant amounts of these chemicals appearing not only in the environment but also in organisms. This study first assessed the levels of nine UV filters in waters along the coast of Shenzhen, China, in tapwater, and in a nearby reservoir. UV filters were found to be high, in both winter and summer at most locations. Then, using zebrafish as a model, the influence of a UV filter mixture after dietary and aqueous exposure was assessed. After exposing artemia to three dominant UV filters at two levels and then feeding these artemia to zebrafish adults, concentrations in both were up to 4 times higher when exposed to the mixtures than when exposed to only a single UV filter. A short-term 25-day dietary exposure to the zebrafish adults did not appear to significantly influence early life stage development of the second generation; however, relatively long exposure over 47 days had significant adverse effects on embryo development. Aqueous exposure of fish embryos to mixtures of the three UV filters demonstrated a general trend of decreased heart/hatching rate as doses increased, coupled with significant changes in activities of catalase and malate dehydrogenase

    Perceptions about traditional Chinese medicine use among Chinese breast cancer survivors: A qualitative study

    Abstract Introduction An increasing number of breast cancer survivors (BCS) use traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) throughout their cancer journey. There is emerging evidence that TCM is effective in the reducing side effects of chemotherapy. However, qualitative patient‐centric and culturally relevant research into TCM use is scant. This qualitative study aimed to explore the use and perceptions of Chinese Hong Kong BCS using TCM. Methods Participants were recruited from a university hospital and three breast cancer patient groups in Hong Kong. Questionnaires regarding the use of TCM were given to all participants, followed by individual semi‐structured interviews on selected BCS to comprehensively understand TCM's use and perceptions. A greater emphasis was placed on the qualitative data. Results About half of the participants (n = 67, 48.9%) used TCM during their cancer treatment journey, among which almost all (n = 64, 95.5%) had improved symptoms. Sleeping disturbances (n = 58, 86.6%) and fatigue (n = 53, 79.1%) were the two most common symptoms that improved after TCM. Interview data revealed that participants used TCM to satisfy unmet needs that mainstream conventional Western medicine could not fulfil. They wished for a sense of control and better well‐being. They expressed improvements in physical and psychological well‐being after the use of TCM. Despite existing barriers, including high cost, long duration of treatment, and disapproval from oncologists, most would still recommend TCM to fellow survivors. Conclusions Chinese Hong Kong BCS who used TCM reported positive experiences. Understanding how BCS perceive and use TCM is important to integrating TCM into survivorship care in this population

    Sorption Behavior, Speciation, and Toxicity of Microplastic-Bound Chromium in Multisolute Systems

    The unexpectedly high affinity of microplastics (MPs) for heavy metals has attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, there is a scarcity of information on the effects of coexisting constituents on plastic–metal interactions, especially in terms of metal speciation. This study aimed to explore the role of benzophenone-type UV filters on the sorption, oxidation state, and toxicity of chromium (Cr) by pristine and UV-irradiated polystyrene MPs (PSMPs). Results showed that Cr uptake by PSMPs was remarkably higher when UV filters were present. This enhanced affinity was attributed to the formation of Cr–UV filter complexes together with multilayer sorption on PSMPs’ surfaces. Subsequent chemical state measurements indicated alteration of the oxidation state of MP-bound metals as a higher Cr­(VI) abundance was identified on the PSMPs with coexisting UV filters. More importantly, our toxicity assessments found that PSMP-bound Cr with a higher oxidation state displayed more severely inhibited microalgae growth. It is noteworthy that toxicological effects of Cr–UV filter complexes were observed only with PSMPs, which thus reaffirms the unique role of MPs in accumulating and transforming contaminants in natural environments. Overall, this study provides the first evidence into the effects of coexisting constituents on the oxidation states and toxicities of MP-bound heavy metals

    Iron Deficiency among School-Aged Adolescents in Hong Kong: Prevalence, Predictors, and Effects on Health-Related Quality of Life

    Iron deficiency (ID) is a prevalent nutritional deficiency affecting children/adolescents worldwide. We reported (1) the prevalence of ID and ID with anemia (IDA) among Chinese school-aged adolescents, (2) clinical and dietary predictors of iron status, and (3) its impact on health-related qualities of life (HRQoL). This cross-sectional study recruited 183 boys and 340 girls (mean age = 17.55) from 16 schools in Hong Kong. ID is defined as serum ferritin <15 μg/L. The participants reported their dietary habits, menstrual patterns (girls), and HRQoL using structured questionnaires. The overall prevalence of ID was 11.1%. None of the boys had ID or IDA. Among girls, the rate of ID was 17.1% and IDA was 10.9%. One-third (36.3%) reported a regular habit of skipping ≥1 meal/day. Lower ferritin was found in adolescents who skipped meals (Est = −35.1, p = 0.017). Lower ferritin is correlated with poorer school functioning (Est = 0.81, p = 0.045) and fatigue (Est = 0.92, p = 0.016). Skipping meals is associated with poorer physical (p = 0.0017) and school functioning (p = 0.027). To conclude, 1 in 10 school-aged adolescents in Hong Kong are iron-deficient. The ID rate in girls (17.1%) is similar to that in other industrialized countries (5.2–16.6%). Future work should promote awareness on the potential health consequences of poor dietary habits on ID and the well-being of adolescents
