    The present study addresses the history of the Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC), a voluntary professional organization at City University of New York (CUNY). The author discusses the circumstances leading to the committee’s formation, its growth, transformation, and its role in the professional development of CUNY librarians. Data collection was done by means of interviews held with past and present members of the committee. The interview questions were deliberated at LILAC’s meeting and sent to the interviewees by email. The interviews’ questions and answers were later grouped into three major categories: the original goals for the committee; the transformation of the goals and the committee’s structure; the most important accomplishments and the future of the committee. Additional information needed for the study not found in the interviews was drawn from archival documents and publications. The committee’s functions are explored as a model of an academic professional organization at a large urban university, and suggestions are given on how to follow the path

    CUNY Libraries Faculty Collaboration for Information Literacy Project Survey 2014

    CUNY, one of the largest urban universities in the United States, comprises eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, five graduate and professional schools, and an honors college. The University’s system is a federation of 31 libraries, with more than 350 faculty and professional staff. As faculty members, CUNY librarians provide students and departmental faculty with a high level of professional library services, at the same time doing research, publishing, teaching, and leading information literacy programs. In the fall semester of 2013 the CUNY Office of Library Services decided to conduct a university-wide survey to explore and identify best practices for collaboration between University faculty and librarians teaching Information Literacy in subject courses. Previous research has shown that collaborative relationships between library and subject faculty is a fundamental key to creating effective student-centered Information Literacy (IL) programs. The students value IL more when it is presented within the disciplinary environment, and their ability to learn IL skills is linked directly to the disciplinary context in which they learn them. We believe that librarians who collaborate with faculty have a greater chance to develop IL instruction that is resonant with the course objectives and make a greater impact on student learning

    LILAC: Planted at CUNY Ten Years Ago and Still Blooming

    CUNY’s Library Information Literacy Advisory Committee (LILAC) will celebrate its tenth anniversary in February 2015. A decade ago twenty librarians from all CUNY libraries came together to review the mission of a new professional committee and establish its charge. Since then the committee members have been working hard and have succeeded in integrating information literacy across the City University curriculum. They have been creating information literacy tutorials and assessment tools, providing support to all CUNY librarians by coordinating and running professional development meetings, seminars, and conferences. This CUNY-wide professional organization, its structure, achievements, and ongoing work deserve to serve as a model of a successful voluntary professional development management group. In order to reconstruct the history of the committee the author interviewed some of its past and present members and searched through archival papers and documents

    Academic Library Innovation through 3D Printing Services

    Purpose – One of the most innovative library services recently introduced by public and academic libraries, the technology of 3D printing, has the potential to be used in multiple educational settings. The goal of the project described in this article was to examine how this novel library digital service motivates students’ learning, and to investigate managerial issues related to the introduction of 3D printing services at a medium-size urban community college library with restricted funding. Design/Methodology/Approach - Since fall 2014, the LaGuardia Library Media Resources Center has been offering a portable consumer-end 3D printer for classroom use. This paper provides historical context for the implementation of 3D printing as a service offered by librarians and discusses how the community college library managed 3D printing services to support class curriculum. At the end of the three-semester-long project students were asked to volunteer to take a survey conducted by the librarian and the class instructor. Findings - The results of the student survey demonstrated that library 3D printing services significantly promoted students’ motivation to learn. The conceptual model of a makerspace should be an essential part of the 21st century academic library. To help make that possible this paper examines certain challenges and limitations faced by librarians when introducing 3D printing, including dedicated space management, professional education, and personnel availability. Originality/Value - During the project described students were able to use library services to print out and study complex engineering and biology models in 3D. The proper planning and management of this innovative service allows academic librarians to enhance class curriculum by providing the means of transforming theory into physical reality

    On the basis of isotopic-geochemical studies and analysis of geological evidences heterogeneity of Hamsara terrane has been determined. Formation of stationed metamorphosed layers underlying the Hamsara formation occurred not earlier than 630 Ma, probably in the oceanic island arc system. Acidic effusive rocks of Hamsara formation were formed in intraplate condition in the range of 462–464 Ma. Sediments of Hamsara formation couldn’t be the part of island arc system and belong to completely other period of geological region development.     AN ACTIVE NEOPROTEROZOIC CONTINENTAL MARGIN OF THE ZAVKHAN MICROCONTINENT (MONGOLIA): ISOTOPIC-GEOCHRONOLOGICAL EVIDENCE

    There have been presented the results of the study of a thick (no less than 2–3 km), extended (for more than 200 km) volcanogenic formation (Tsetsen-Uul or Yargait) in the south of the Zavkhan terrane of the Central Asian fold belt. The formation is an assemblage of frequently intercalating effusive rocks of the subalkaline basalt-andesite-dacite-rhyolite series, their tuffs, tuffites, ignimbrites, and terrigenous rocks. Felsic rocks dominate over basites, and tuffogenic rocks dominate over effusives. There is some evidence that the formation emerged in a subaerial setting, with explosive eruptions, and the petrogeochemical features of the effusive rocks are typical for subduction environment. The felsic effusive rocks have high negative εNd from –11.5 to –12.8 and Early Precambrian model age TNd(DM)=2.4–2.5 Ga, which indicates the presence of an ancient crust at the depth and its involvement in magma. The evidence supports the formation of volcanic rocks within an active continental margin. The continental-margin formation stage ranges from ~860 Ma to ~780 Ma based on the LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircons.The Tsetsen-Uul (Yargait) formation is similar in structure and composition to the Zavkhan formation of the Zavkhan terrane and the Sarkhoi group of the Tuva-Mongolian massif, and partially overlaps them in formation time. It is concluded that all three volcanogenic formations emerged in the same geodynamic setting and in the same time interval, and are the fragments of a continental volcanic arc belonging to both Zavkhan and Tuva-Mongolian paleomicrocontinents

    AGE OF THE KINTEREP FORMATION OF THE NORTHWESTERN SALAIR: CHEMOSTRATIGRAPHY AND U-Pb ZIRCON DATING

    A comprehensive study of the stratotype section of the Kinterep formation of the North-Western Salair was carried out, including geochemical and isotope (Sr, C, O) studies of carbonate rocks, and U-Pb dating (LA-ICP-MS) of igneous zircon crystals from tuffites. The studied carbonate rocks are pure limestones with Mg/Ca less than 0.007 and a low proportion of insoluble residue (average 5 %). Kinterep limestones are characterized by δ18OSMOW values from 19.8 to 23.8 ‰ and δ13СPDB values from –0.7 to +0.9. The Sr isotope composition in limestones of the Kinterep formation varies in a narrow range of 87Sr/86Sr values between 0.70851 and 0.70859. Comparison of the obtained isotopic characteristics (87Sr/86Sr and δ13СPDB) of Kinterep formation limestones with the generalized global 87Sr/86Sr variation curve and δ13СPDB values in the pale-ocean suggests two equally probable interpretations of the time of accumulation of Kinterep formation limestones: 550–540 and 525–510 Ma. U-Pb dating of magmatic zircon crystals from tuffite, which forms an interlayer among limestones of the Kinterep formation, showed the age at the boundary of ~515 Ma. Thus, using a combination of isotope (Sr, C) chemostratigraphy of carbonate rocks and U-Pb dating of igneous zircon crystals from tuffites syngenetic to limestones, the age limit of 525–510 Ma was established for the time of the formation of the Kinterep formation of the Salair basin. Carbonate rocks of similar age and similar features of the isotopic composition are known in neighbouring areas (for example, the Kuznetsk Alatau) and in regions of the Siberian Platform and microcontinents of Central Asia (Tuva-Mongolian and Dzabkhan) spatially distant from the Salair basin

Свита сложена эффузивами субщелочной базальт-андезит-дацит-риолитовой серии, их туфами, туффитами, игнимбритами и терригенными породами, находящимися в частом переслаивании. Преобладают кислые породы над основными и туффогенные над эффузивами. По ряду признаков накопление толщи происходило в субаэральной обстановке с эксплозивными наземными извержениями, а петрогеохимические особенности эффузивов типичны для условий субдукции. Эффузивы кислого и среднего состава характеризуются большими отрицательными значениями εNd – от −11.5 до −12.8 и раннедокембрийским модельным возрастом TNd(DM)=2.4–2.5 млрд лет, что указывает на присутствие на глубине древней коры и на ее вовлечение в магму. Полученные факты свидетельствуют в пользу образования вулканитов в условиях активной континентальной окраины. Крайние временные границы, в пределах которых формировалась окраинно-континентальная система по результатам U-Pb определений по цирконам методом LA-ICP-MS, оцениваются в ~860–780 млн лет.Цосулинская (яргайт) свита по строению и составу вулканитов близка дзабханской свите одноименного террейна и сархойской серии Тувино-Монгольского массива и частично перекрывается с ними по времени образования. Таким образом, все три вулканогенные толщи сформировались в однотипной геодинамической обстановке, в одном временном интервале и являются фрагментами континентальной вулканической дуги, общей для Дзабханского и Тувино-Монгольского палеомикроконтинентов
