Stalking a Killer: UAW 735\u27s Cancer Watch
[Excerpt] GM Hydra-matic is a dangerous plant. Formerly known as the Willow Run (Michigan) Bomber Plant because it produced B-24 bombers during World War II, the plant today builds transmissions for GM vehicles and overseas customers such as Bentley, Jaguar, Rolls Royce and Isuzu. In manufacturing transmissions, the plant uses thousands of coolants, lubricants, degreasers and solvents. Those chemicals, workers suspect, are the causes of GM Hydramatic\u27s high rate of cancer, particularly brain cancer.
This is the story of how a group of workers represented by UAW Local 735 formed a union Cancer Watch Group (CWG) at GM Hydra-matic to address a problem that the company and outside researchers were not showing sufficient urgency about. It\u27s a story of rank-and-file health-and-safety organizing that relies on the workers themselves to research the links between cancer and the substances they work with
Fractional Zero Forcing via Three-color Forcing Games
An -fold analogue of the positive semidefinite zero forcing process that
is carried out on the -blowup of a graph is introduced and used to define
the fractional positive semidefinite forcing number. Properties of the graph
blowup when colored with a fractional positive semidefinite forcing set are
examined and used to define a three-color forcing game that directly computes
the fractional positive semidefinite forcing number of a graph. We develop a
fractional parameter based on the standard zero forcing process and it is shown
that this parameter is exactly the skew zero forcing number with a three-color
approach. This approach and an algorithm are used to characterize graphs whose
skew zero forcing number equals zero.Comment: 24 page
For Whom is the Rural Economy Resilient? Initial Effects of Drought in Western Sudan
This discussion piece addresses two recent debates: entitlement theory and the resilience of rural systems. The authors find that in western Sudan entitlement theory provides a specific and useful framework for understanding the nature of the crisis confronting the society. Arguments about the resilience of rural systems, however, need to be more closely examined and will depend on site-specific factors. The rural economy and society of western Sudan were not found to be resilient
Women priests in the Church of England : psychological type profile
This study employed psychological type theory and measurement to explore the psychological profile of women priests ordained in the Church of England. A sample of 83 Anglican clergywomen in England completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The data demonstrated clear preferences for introversion (63%) over extraversion (37%), for intuition (60%) over sensing (40%), for feeling (76%) over thinking (24%), and for judging (55%) over perceiving (45%). In terms of dominant types, 37% were dominant feelers, 31% dominant intuitives, 23% dominant sensers, and 8% dominant thinkers. These findings are discussed to illuminate the preferred ministry styles of Anglican clergywomen in England and to highlight the significant differences between the psychological type profile of clergywomen and the UK female population norms
Debye Sources and the Numerical Solution of the Time Harmonic Maxwell Equations, II
In this paper, we develop a new integral representation for the solution of
the time harmonic Maxwell equations in media with piecewise constant dielectric
permittivity and magnetic permeability in R^3. This representation leads to a
coupled system of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind for four
scalar densities supported on the material interface. Like the classical Muller
equation, it has no spurious resonances. Unlike the classical approach,
however, the representation does not suffer from low frequency breakdown. We
illustrate the performance of the method with numerical examples.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figure
