    4-H Volunteer Continuing Education Academy

    Get PDF
The 4-H Volunteer Continuing Education Academy was developed to provide 4-H club leaders a continuing education opportunity, to assist them in developing and enhancing the skills and knowledge necessary for their volunteer role, and to provide a means for 4-H livestock and horse club leaders to recertify. All participants reported satisfaction with the academy and indicated that they would attend again and would recruit other volunteers to participate. The academy can be replicated in many ways and introduced at any level to provide continuing education and volunteer support. This article describes the academy and provides information for those who may wish to implement a similar program

Evaluation of the California Mastitis Test to Determine Udder Health Status of Early Lactation Dairy Cows

    Get PDF
Quarter milk bacteriology results of samples collected within the first week of calving were used to calculate the test characteristics of the California Mastitis Test (CMT) that estimate the udder health status of fresh dairy cows. Over 1,200 quarters were both cultured and had a CMT performed. The overall sensitivity and specificity of the CMT was 68.8% and 71.5%, respectively. Using a cutpoint of any CMT reaction as a positive test, and examining the results by various days in milk, the highest sensitivity and specificity occurred at day four (82.4% and 80.6%, respectively). The CMT has the potential to be useful tool for monitoring udder health in fresh cows

    Online Orientation for 4-H Volunteers

    Get PDF
The 4-H Online Volunteer Orientation Series provides an opportunity for volunteers to receive orientation at times and places that are convenient for them. Online orientation provides a means for efficiently orienting a large cadre of volunteers. Twenty voice-over PowerPoint presentations were created in three series: 4-H Camp (seven presentations), Volunteer Certifications (three presentations), and 4-H Clubs (10 presentations). Each presentation concludes with a five-question quiz designed to assess knowledge gained. Volunteers scoring 80% or higher receive credit. Volunteers who have completed orientation better understand and fulfill their roles, serve more effectively, and have a greater likelihood of continuing their service

Evaluating the impact of a resident research program in general surgery

    Get PDF
Background: Programs of resident research have been found to improve research productivity. However, evidence of the success of these programs is lacking in a Canadian context. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the introduction of a formal program of resident research at a single Canadian academic centre. Methods: Resident research activities were tracked over a 10-year period (Resident Research Day (RRD) presentations, abstract presentations, published articles). Activities were divided into pre (2002-2007) and post (2007-2012) resident research program implementation time frames. Differences in research productivity were compared between time frames. Surveys of resident attitudes towards research were administered prior to the program’s implementation in 2007, and following introduction of the resident research program in 2009 and 2015.Results: Overall, research productivity (abstracts, publications, and RRD presentations) increased between pre and post resident research program time periods, with a statistically significant increase in mean number of published abstracts. Resident attitudes towards research changed somewhat over time, with fewer residents supporting mandatory research in recent years. Conclusion: Implementation of a resident program of research resulted in a significant increase in research productivity. The setting of clear, modifiable, and achievable goals, as well as providing tools for research success, have contributed to the success of this program

Neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas causing biliary obstruction in a 12 year-old girl: A case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Pancreatic tumors are uncommon in children and rarely result in biliary obstruction. A previously well 12-year old female presented with a one-week history of fatigue, pruritis, and painless jaundice. Abdominal ultrasound demonstrated a mass in the pancreatic head associated with dilation of the common bile duct. Further workup included abdominal MRI, CT and endoscopic retrograde pancreaticogram (ERCP) with biliary stenting. Octreotide scan did not reveal uptake in the pancreatic tumor. Percutaneous biopsies were consistent with a grade 2 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Preoperative imaging demonstrated involvement of the portal vein. The patient was brought the operating room for a pancreaticoduodenectomy and portal vein resection. Final pathology revealed a T3N1M0 pancreatic NET. The patient recovered uneventfully
