Pheomelanin-based colouration is correlated with indices of flying strategies in the barn owl
Resource polymorphism refers to individuals from the same population foraging in alternative habitats or on alternative food. Food specialization can be associated with adaptations such as colour polymorphism, with pale and dark colours conferring differential camouflage in different habitats. Pale and dark-reddish pheomelanic Barn Owls (Tyto alba) forage on different prey species in closed and open habitats, respectively. We show here that darker-reddish owls have heavier stomach content when found dead, and their 5th secondary wing feather is more deeply anchored inside the integument. These correlations suggest that their feathers bend less when flying, and that darker-reddish Barn Owls are able sustain more intense flying than their paler conspecifics
Relationship between diet and reproductive success in the Israeli barn owl
The effect of diet on barn owl (Tyto alba) breeding biology has been well studied in the temperate regions but not in the more arid Middle East. In temperate regions, barn owls are darker colored and mainly prey upon Cricetidae rodents, whereas in arid regions, they are lighter colored and prey to a larger degree upon Muridae rodents. In this study we analyzed the diet and breeding success of 261 barn owl pairs nesting in Israel. The reproductive success of barn owls declined from March to August, and fledged more young when they consumed a larger proportion of social voles (Microtus socialis guentheri). Although the diet of the lighter colored barn owls in Israel comprises more Muridae than that of the darker morphs in temperate regions, in both regions the number of barn owl young increases with an increased proportion of voles in the diet

Conditional association between melanism and personality in Israeli barn owls
Capsule Boldness defines the extent to which animals are willing to take risks in the presence of a predator. Late, but not early, in the breeding season, Israeli nestling Barn Owls displaying larger black feather spots were more docile, feigned death longer and had a lower breathing rate when handled than smaller-spotted nestlings. Larger-spotted breeding females were less docile if heavy but more more docile if light. The covariation between personality (boldness vs. timid) and melanin-based colouration is therefore conditional on environmental factors
Multichannel interference mitigation methods in radio astronomy
Radio-astronomical observations are increasingly corrupted by RF
interference, and online detection and filtering algorithms are becoming
essential. To facilitate the introduction of such techniques into radio
astronomy, we formulate the astronomical problem in an array signal processing
language, and give an introduction to some elementary algorithms from that
field. We consider two topics in detail: interference detection by rank
estimation of short-term covariance matrices, and spatial filtering by subspace
estimation and projection. We discuss experimental data collected at the
Westerbork radio telescope, and illustrate the effectiveness of the space-time
detection and blanking process on the recovery of a 3C48 absorption line in the

A morphological algorithm for improving radio-frequency interference detection
A technique is described that is used to improve the detection of
radio-frequency interference in astronomical radio observatories. It is applied
on a two-dimensional interference mask after regular detection in the
time-frequency domain with existing techniques. The scale-invariant rank (SIR)
operator is defined, which is a one-dimensional mathematical morphology
technique that can be used to find adjacent intervals in the time or frequency
domain that are likely to be affected by RFI. The technique might also be
applicable in other areas in which morphological scale-invariant behaviour is
desired, such as source detection. A new algorithm is described, that is shown
to perform quite well, has linear time complexity and is fast enough to be
applied in modern high resolution observatories. It is used in the default

Application of Market Models to Network Equilibrium Problems
We present a general two-side market model with divisible commodities and
price functions of participants. A general existence result on unbounded sets
is obtained from its variational inequality re-formulation. We describe an
extension of the network flow equilibrium problem with elastic demands and a
new equilibrium type model for resource allocation problems in wireless
communication networks, which appear to be particular cases of the general
market model. This enables us to obtain new existence results for these models
as some adjustments of that for the market model. Under certain additional
conditions the general market model can be reduced to a decomposable
optimization problem where the goal function is the sum of two functions and
one of them is convex separable, whereas the feasible set is the corresponding
Cartesian product. We discuss some versions of the partial linearization
method, which can be applied to these network equilibrium problems.Comment: 18 pages, 3 table
