Vibrations and diverging length scales near the unjamming transition

We numerically study the vibrations of jammed packings of particles interacting with finite-range, repulsive potentials at zero temperature. As the packing fraction ϕ\phi is lowered towards the onset of unjamming at ϕc\phi_{c}, the density of vibrational states approaches a non-zero value in the limit of zero frequency. For ϕ>ϕc\phi>\phi_{c}, there is a crossover frequency, ω∗\omega^{*} below which the density of states drops towards zero. This crossover frequency obeys power-law scaling with ϕ−ϕc\phi-\phi_{c}. Characteristic length scales, determined from the dominant wavevector contributing to the eigenmode at ω∗\omega^{*}, diverge as power-laws at the unjamming transition.Comment: Submitted to PRL, 4 pages + 7 .eps figure

Structural signatures of the unjamming transition at zero temperature

We study the pair correlation function g(r)g(r) for zero-temperature, disordered, soft-sphere packings just above the onset of jamming. We find distinct signatures of the transition in both the first and split second peaks of this function. As the transition is approached from the jammed side (at higher packing fraction) the first peak diverges and narrows on the small-rr side to a delta-function. On the high-rr side of this peak, g(r)g(r) decays as a power-law. In the split second peak, the two subpeaks are both singular at the transition, with power-law behavior on their low-rr sides and step-function drop-offs on their high-rr sides. These singularities at the transition are reminiscent of empirical criteria that have previously been used to distinguish glassy structures from liquid ones.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure

Scattering of Dirac and Majorana Fermions off Domain Walls

We investigate the interaction of fermions having both Dirac and left-handed and right-handed Majorana mass terms with vacuum domain walls. By solving the equations of motion in thin-wall approximation, we calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients for the scattering of fermions off walls.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, some typos corrected, one reference added, major revisions, title changed, version accepted for publication in Phys. The young stellar population of NGC 4214 as observed with HST. I. Data and methods

We present the data and methods that we have used to perform a detailed UV-optical study of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214 using multifilter HST/WFPC2+STIS photometry. We explain the process followed to obtain high-quality photometry and astrometry of the stellar and cluster populations of this galaxy. We describe the procedure used to transform magnitudes and colors into physical parameters using spectral energy distributions. The data show the existence of both young and old stellar populations that can be resolved at the distance of NGC 4214 (2.94 Mpc) and we perform a general description of those populations.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, and 8 table

    Helical Magnetic Fields from Inflation

We analyze the generation of seed magnetic fields during de Sitter inflation considering a non-invariant conformal term in the electromagnetic Lagrangian of the form −14I(ϕ)FμνF~μν-\frac14 I(\phi) F_{\mu \nu} \widetilde{F}^{\mu \nu}, where I(ϕ)I(\phi) is a pseudoscalar function of a non-trivial background field ϕ\phi. In particular, we consider a toy model, that could be realized owing to the coupling between the photon and either a (tachyonic) massive pseudoscalar field and a massless pseudoscalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity, where II follows a simple power-law behavior I(k,η)=g/(−kη)βI(k,\eta) = g/(-k\eta)^{\beta} during inflation, while it is negligibly small subsequently. Here, gg is a positive dimensionless constant, kk the wavenumber, η\eta the conformal time, and β\beta a real positive number. We find that only when β=1\beta = 1 and 0.1≲g≲20.1 \lesssim g \lesssim 2 astrophysically interesting fields can be produced as excitation of the vacuum, and that they are maximally helical.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, subsection IIc and references added; accepted for publication in IJMP

Gravitational waves from extreme mass-ratio inspirals in Dynamical Chern-Simons gravity

Dynamical Chern-Simons gravity is an interesting extension of General Relativity, which finds its way in many different contexts, including string theory, cosmological settings and loop quantum gravity. In this theory, the gravitational field is coupled to a scalar field by a parity-violating term, which gives rise to characteristic signatures. Here we investigate how Chern-Simons gravity would affect the quasi-circular inspiralling of a small, stellar-mass object into a large non-rotating supermassive black hole, and the accompanying emission of gravitational and scalar waves. We find the relevant equations describing the perturbation induced by the small object, and we solve them through the use of Green's function techniques. Our results show that for a wide range of coupling parameters, the Chern-Simons coupling gives rise to an increase in total energy flux, which translates into a fewer number of gravitational-wave cycles over a certain bandwidth. For space-based gravitational-wave detectors such as LISA, this effect can be used to constrain the coupling parameter effectively.Comment: RevTex4, 18 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

From vocational training to education: the development of a no-frontiers education policy for Europe?

    Get PDF
This article focuses on developments towards an EU educational policy. Education was not included as one of the Community competencies in the Treaty of Rome. The first half of the article analyses the way that the European Court of Justice and the Commission of the European Communities between them managed to develop a series of substantial Community programmes out of Article 128 on vocational training. The second half of the article discusses educational developments in the community following the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty of Amsterdam. Whilst the legal competence of the community now includes education, the author's argument is that the inclusion of an educational competence will not result in further developments to mirror those in the years before the Treaty on Europe</p

Vibrational origin of the fast relaxation processes in molecular glass-formers

    Get PDF
We study the interaction of the relaxation processes with the density fluctuations by molecular dynamics simulation of a flexible molecule model for o-terphenyl (oTP) in the liquid and supercooled phases. We find evidence, besides the structural relaxation, of a secondary vibrational relaxation whose characteristic time, few ps, is slightly temperature dependent. This i) confirms the result by Monaco et al. [Phys. Rev, E 62, 7595 (2000)] of the vibrational nature of the fast relaxation observed in Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) experiments in oTP; and ii) poses a caveat on the interpretation of the BLS spectra of molecular systems in terms of a purely center of mass dynamics.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 4 eps figure

Numerical relativity for D dimensional axially symmetric space-times: formalism and code tests

    Get PDF
The numerical evolution of Einstein's field equations in a generic background has the potential to answer a variety of important questions in physics: from applications to the gauge-gravity duality, to modelling black hole production in TeV gravity scenarios, analysis of the stability of exact solutions and tests of Cosmic Censorship. In order to investigate these questions, we extend numerical relativity to more general space-times than those investigated hitherto, by developing a framework to study the numerical evolution of D dimensional vacuum space-times with an SO(D-2) isometry group for D\ge 5, or SO(D-3) for D\ge 6. Performing a dimensional reduction on a (D-4)-sphere, the D dimensional vacuum Einstein equations are rewritten as a 3+1 dimensional system with source terms, and presented in the Baumgarte, Shapiro, Shibata and Nakamura (BSSN) formulation. This allows the use of existing 3+1 dimensional numerical codes with small adaptations. Brill-Lindquist initial data are constructed in D dimensions and a procedure to match them to our 3+1 dimensional evolution equations is given. We have implemented our framework by adapting the LEAN code and perform a variety of simulations of non-spinning black hole space-times. Specifically, we present a modified moving puncture gauge which facilitates long term stable simulations in D=5. We further demonstrate the internal consistency of the code by studying convergence and comparing numerical versus analytic results in the case of geodesic slicing for D=5,6.Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures; v2 Minor changes and added two references.
