Flavor-Spin Symmetry and the Tensor Charge
Exploiting an approximate phenomenological symmetry of the
light axial vector mesons and using pole dominance, we calculate the flavor
contributions to the nucleon tensor charge. The result depends on the decay
constants of the axial vector mesons and their couplings to the nucleons.Comment: Talk given at 3rd Circum-Pan-Pacific Symposium on High Energy Spin

Ultrasonic evaluation of oxidation and reduction effects on the elastic behavior and global microstructure of YBa2Cu3O7-x
Ultrasonic velocity measurement techniques were used to evaluate the effects of oxidation and reduction on the elastic properties, global microstructure and oxygen content of the YBa2Cu3O(7-x) ceramic superconductor for samples ranging from 70 to 90 pct. of theoretical density. Bulk density, velocity, and elastic modulus generally increased with increasing oxygen content upon oxidation, and this behavior was reversible. Velocity image patterns were similar after oxidation and reduction treatments for a 90 pct. dense sample, although the velocity value at any given point on the sample was changed following the treatments. The unchanging pattern correlated with destructive measurements showing that the spatial pore distribution (fraction and size) was not measurably altered after the treatments. Changes in superconducting behavior, crystal structure, and grain structure were observed consistent with changes in oxygen content
Intrinsic and Rashba Spin-orbit Interactions in Graphene Sheets
Starting from a microscopic tight-binding model and using second order
perturbation theory, we derive explicit expressions for the intrinsic and
Rashba spin-orbit interaction induced gaps in the Dirac-like low-energy band
structure of an isolated graphene sheet. The Rashba interaction parameter is
first order in the atomic carbon spin-orbit coupling strength and first
order in the external electric field perpendicular to the graphene plane,
whereas the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction which survives at E=0 is second
order in . The spin-orbit terms in the low-energy effective Hamiltonian
have the form proposed recently by Kane and Mele. \textit{Ab initio} electronic
structure calculations were performed as a partial check on the validity of the
tight-binding model.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; typos corrected, references update
A novel laser ranging system for measurement of ground-to-satellite distances
A technique was developed for improving the precision of laser ranging measurements of ground-to-satellite distances. The method employs a mode-locked laser transmitter and utilizes an image converter tube equipped with deflection plates in measuring the time of flight of the laser pulse to a distant retroreflector and back. Samples of the outgoing and returning light pulses are focussed on the photocathode of the image converter tube, whose deflection plates are driven by a high-voltage 120 MHz sine wave derived from a very stable oscillator. From the relative positions of the images produced at the output phosphor by the two light pulses, it is possible to make a precise determination of the fractional amount by which the time of flight exceeds some large integral multiple of the period of the deflection sinusoid
Effects of long-chord acoustically treated stator vanes on fan noise. 1: Effect of long chord (taped stator)
A set of long-chord stator vanes was designed to replace the vanes in an existing fan stage. The long vanes consisted of a turning section and axial extension pieces, both of which incorporated acoustic damping material. The acoustic damping material was made inactive for these tests by covering with metal tape, and the stator vanes were tested in three length configurations. Compared to the values for the original stage, broadband noise was reduced in the middle to high frequencies with the long stator vanes, but a broadband noise increase was observed at the low frequencies. No change was observed in the blade passage tone, but some aft end reduction in the overtones was observed
