It is utter foolishness to pray for increased sensitivities in a world like ours. I have always carried a darkness that fed and entertained me. Now, I don’t want it anymore. This is my dilemma—questioning if I can undo what I have done to myself. For so many years I have sought the shelter of detaching affinities, guarding them with introverted clutches. My bed is an uncomfortable place when I think like this. My feet tangle in the sheets, hands cover my face, my breath leaves heavily. The temperature grows excessive. I beckon tears, drawing a forced union with divinity. I envision interlocking plates of sculpted metal encasing my vital organs, shielding my capacity to feel. These armor plates contain my emotional radiation, reflecting their source, poisoning my sensitivities, sealed and buried like nuclear waste

Jewish male homosexual identity in South Africa an interpretive phenomenological analysis case study using responsive interviewing

    Get PDF
M.A.This study is a phenomenological case study *i.e. the focus is on the participant’s personal descriptive experience] using responsive interviewing [i.e. the interviewer allows the interviewee to determine the direction and content of the interview] in an effort to understand the personal challenges that a Jewish male homosexual person, Irvin, has to face in the current South African context of the 21st century. What is revealed is that for a man to remain true to his religious convictions and at the same time to embrace his homosexual desires is by no means an easy balancing task. Yet the merger of a religious identity with a homosexual identity can become an inspirational example of what it is to live a truly authentic life, in which ‘compromise’, far from being a negative means to an end, becomes central to what it means to be genuinely authentic

A polarographic study of respiration in a blue-green alga

    Get PDF
The study of many aspects of physiology is accomplished by the study of respiration under varied conditions. For this purpose, a simple, rapid, and relatively accurate respirometer would be useful. This project was undertaken to investigate the possibility of adapting previously described polarographic techniques to the measurement of respiration

A martingale analysis of first passage times of time-dependent Wiener diffusion models

Research in psychology and neuroscience has successfully modeled decision making as a process of noisy evidence accumulation to a decision bound. While there are several variants and implementations of this idea, the majority of these models make use of a noisy accumulation between two absorbing boundaries. A common assumption of these models is that decision parameters, e.g., the rate of accumulation (drift rate), remain fixed over the course of a decision, allowing the derivation of analytic formulas for the probabilities of hitting the upper or lower decision threshold, and the mean decision time. There is reason to believe, however, that many types of behavior would be better described by a model in which the parameters were allowed to vary over the course of the decision process. In this paper, we use martingale theory to derive formulas for the mean decision time, hitting probabilities, and first passage time (FPT) densities of a Wiener process with time-varying drift between two time-varying absorbing boundaries. This model was first studied by Ratcliff (1980) in the two-stage form, and here we consider the same model for an arbitrary number of stages (i.e. intervals of time during which parameters are constant). Our calculations enable direct computation of mean decision times and hitting probabilities for the associated multistage process. We also provide a review of how martingale theory may be used to analyze similar models employing Wiener processes by re-deriving some classical results. In concert with a variety of numerical tools already available, the current derivations should encourage mathematical analysis of more complex models of decision making with time-varying evidence
