Cooperative dynamics of heuristic swelling and inhibitive micellization in double-network hydrogels by ionic dissociation of polyelectrolyte

    Get PDF
In this study, a cooperative model has been proposed for the double network (DN) hydrogel, which synchronously undergoes heuristic swelling and inhibitive micellization by the ionic dissociation of polyelectrolyte. Flory-Huggins solution theory is initially employed to identify the working mechanism of dielectric constants on swelling behavior of the DN hydrogel. Then a free-energy function is introduced to formulate the constitutive relationship of the DN hydrogels, in which the first hydrotropic network undergoes a heuristic swelling and the second hydrophobic network undergoes an inhibitive micellization. Finally, the proposed model has been verified using the experimental results reported in the literature. A good agreement between the theoretical results and experimental ones has been achieved. This study provides a fundamental approach to formulate the constitutive relationship and to understand the cooperative dynamics of two types of networks in DN hydrogels induced by the polyelectrolyte

Heat transfer performance of a device integrating thermosyphon with form-stable phase change materials

peer reviewedPhase change materials (PCM) are applied worldwide as a thermal energy storage technology to reduce energy demands in buildings and solve environmental contamination issues. Form-stable phase change materials (FSPCM), as one branch of PCMs, can be improved by embedding them with thermosyphon, resulting in a better thermal performance. In this paper, a novel thermoplastic elastomer-based FSPCM was developed and tested. A device integrating FSPCM with thermosyphon was created, and the heat transfer mechanism of the unit was studied. The numerical model was established, and experiments were conducted accordingly. The average relative error between the experimental data and the model predictions was <3 %. Furthermore, a parameter study was conducted to investigate the effects of several essential factors. As a result, the evaporator length and PCM thermal conductivity were found to significantly influence the unit's heat transfer rate and overall thermal performance. However, the impact of the latent heat of the FSPCM on the heat transfer rate was negligible, for which it takes 1170 s, 1230 s, and 1394 s to finish changing phase with 136 kJ/kg, 160 kJ/kg, and 200 kJ/kg, respectively. This paper provides insights on the performance of thermosyphon integrated form-stable phase change materials and discusses its relevance for thermal energy storage applications.11. Recent Progress in Multiterminal Memristors for Neuromorphic Applications

Abstract The essential step for developing neuromorphic systems is to construct more biorealistic elementary devices with rich spatiotemporal dynamics to exhibit highly separable responses in dynamic environmental circumstances. Unlike transistor‐based devices and circuits with zeroth‐order complexity, memristors intrinsically express some simple biomimetic functions. However, with only two‐terminal structure, precise control of operation principles to ensure large dynamic space, improved linearity and symmetry, multimodal operation as well as high‐order complexity is hard to achieve in a traditional memristor owing to its limited degree of freedom. Therefore, multiterminal memristors including both concrete terminals and virtual terminals (light, pressure, gas, ferroelectric polarity, etc.) have been proposed to obtain precise modulation of memristive characteristics. This review focuses on the recent progress in multiterminal memristors and their neuromorphic applications. The operation principle, application of multiterminal memristor on neuromorphic computing in different scenarios, existing challenges and future prospects are discussed

Ferroelectricity and Rashba effect in a two-dimensional Dion-Jacobson hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are a new generation of high-performance materials for solar cells and light emitting diodes. Beyond these applications, ferroelectricity and spin-related properties of HOIPs are increasingly attracting interests. The presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, allied with symmetry breaking ensured by remanent polarization, should give rise to Rashba-type splitting of electronic bands in HOIP. However, the report of both ferroelectricity and Rashba effect in HOIP is rare. Here we report the observation of robust ferroelectricity and Rashba effect in two-dimensional Dion-Jacobson perovskites.NRF (Natl Research Foundation, S’pore)ASTAR (Agency for Sci., Tech. and Research, S’pore)MOE (Min. of Education, S’pore)Accepted versio
