GEOS-3 ocean current investigation using radar altimeter profiling
Both quasi-stationary and dynamic departures from the marine geoid were successfully detected using altitude measurements from the GEOS-3 radar altimeter. The quasi-stationary departures are observed either as elevation changes in single pass profiles across the Gulf Stream or at the crowding of contour lines at the western and northern areas of topographic maps generated using altimeter data spanning one month or longer. Dynamic features such as current meandering and spawned eddies can be monitored by comparing monthly mean maps. Comparison of altimeter inferred eddies with IR detected thermal rings indicates agreement of the two techniques. Estimates of current velocity are made using derived slope estimates in conjunction with the geostrophic equation
Reflecting on the Physics of Notations applied to a visualisation case study
This paper presents a critical reflection upon the concept of 'physics of notations' proposed by Moody. This is based upon the post hoc application of the concept in the analysis of a visualisation tool developed for a common place mathematics tool. Although this is not the intended design and development approach presumed or preferred by the physics of notations, there are benefits to analysing an extant visualisation. In particular, our analysis benefits from the visualisation having been developed and refined employing graphic design professionals and extensive formative user feedback. Hence the rationale for specific visualisation features is to some extent traceable. This reflective analysis shines a light on features of both the visualisation and domain visualised, illustrating that it could have been analysed more thoroughly at design time. However the same analysis raises a variety of interesting questions about the viability of scoping practical visualisation design in the framework proposed by the physics of notations
Entanglement for all quantum states
It is shown that a state that is factorizable in the Hilbert space
corresponding to some choice of degrees of freedom, becomes entangled for a
different choice of degrees of freedom. Therefore, entanglement is not a
special case but is ubiquitous in quantum systems. Simple examples are
calculated and a general proof is provided. The physical relevance of the
change of tensor product structure is mentioned.Comment: 9 page
Summary of Skylab S-193 altimeter altitude results
The SKYLAB S-193 altimeter altitude results are presented in a concise format for further use and analysis by the scientific community. The altimeter mission and instrumentation is described along with the altimeter processing techniques and values of parameters used for processing. The determination of reference orbits is discussed, and the tracking systems utilized are tabulated. Techniques for determining satellite pointing are presented and a tabulation of pointing for each data mission included. The geographical location, the ocean bottom topography, the altimeter-determined ocean surface topography, and the altimeter automatic gain control history is presented. Some typical applications of this data are suggested
GEOS-3 radar altimeter study for the South Atlantic Bight
Three years of radar altimeter data from GEOS-3 for the South Atlantic Bight were processed. Mean monthly topographic maps were produced which estimate geostrophic flow in the region. Statistical distribution of the surface wind speed and significant wave height as a function of both space and time are presented
Hydrodynamic obstruction to bubble expansion
We discuss a hydrodynamic obstruction to bubble wall acceleration during a
cosmological first-order phase transition. The obstruction results from the
heating of the plasma in the compression wave in front of the phase transition
boundary. We provide a simple criterion for the occurrence of the obstruction
at subsonic bubble wall velocity in terms of the critical temperature, the
phase transition temperature, and the latent heat of the model under
consideration. The criterion serves as a sufficient condition of subsonic
bubble wall velocities as required by electroweak baryogenesis.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures; comments and reference added, published versio
Ordered La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanohole arrays fabricated on a nanoporous alumina template by pulsed laser ablation
Highly ordered nanohole arrays of [Formula: see text] manganite have been synthesized using pulsed laser deposition on nanoporous alumina template. Their structure and phase formation were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The magnetic measurements were performed with respect to temperature and field and exhibit a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition at 284 K. In addition, the temperature dependence of electrical resistance was measured at different magnetic fields and an insulating phase throughout all the temperatures was observed. The low temperature ferromagnetic insulating state is discussed by the presence of a canted ferromagnetic state induced by the nanoholes. The present work shows the feasibility of combining both the nanoporous alumina template and pulsed laser ablation for the fabrication of perovskite manganite nanohole arrays which can also be extended to fabricate other multicomponent oxide nanohole materials.M K is thankful to FCT, Portugal for the Grant No. SFRH/ BPD/75110/2010. Fiber bragg gratings for medical applications and future challenges: A review
In the last decades, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have become increasingly attractive to medical applications due to their unique properties such as small size, biocompatibility, immunity to electromagnetic interferences, high sensitivity and multiplexing capability. FBGs have been employed in the development of surgical tools, assistive devices, wearables, and biosensors, showing great potentialities for medical uses. This paper reviews the FBG-based measuring systems, their principle of work, and their applications in medicine and healthcare. Particular attention is given to sensing solutions for biomechanics, minimally invasive surgery, physiological monitoring, and medical biosensing. Strengths, weaknesses, open challenges, and future trends are also discussed to highlight how FBGs can meet the demands of next-generation medical devices and healthcare system
