Maine Monthly Overdose Report for November 2021

During November there were a total of 773 fatal and nonfatal overdoses, including 64 (8%) confirmed and suspected fatal overdoses and 709 (92%) nonfatal overdoses. The proportion of fatal to nonfatal overdoses decreased from 9% to 7% between January and November. Deduplicated data derived from multiple statewide sources were compiled to reach these totals. These sources include nonfatal overdose incidents reported by hospital emergency rooms (ED), emergency medical service (EMS) responses without transport to the ED; overdose reversals reported by law enforcement; and overdose reversals reported by community members or agencies receiving state-distributed naloxone. There are an unknown number of private overdose reversals that were not reported and an unknown number of the community-reported reversals that may have overlapped with emergency response by EMS or law enforcement

During December 2021, there were 769 nonfatal and fatal overdoses in Maine, including 718 (93%) nonfatal and 51 (7%) confirmed or suspected fatal overdoses. The proportion of fatal to nonfatal overdoses decreased from 9% to 7% of total overdoses between January and December. This report documents suspected and confirmed fatal and nonfatal drug overdoses in Maine during August 2022 as well as for the period January 2021–August 2022. During August, the proportion of fatal overdoses averaged 6.8% of total overdoses. Monthly proportions of 2022 fatalities have fluctuated from a low of 5.1% in May 2022 to a high of 8.0% in April. During the first eight months of 2022, the average number of overdoses per month was approximately 852 (58 fatal and 794 nonfatal incidents)

This report documents suspected and confirmed fatal and nonfatal drug overdoses in Maine during July 2022 as well as for the period January-July 2022. During July, the proportion of fatal overdoses averaged 7.9% of total overdoses. Monthly proportions of 2022 fatalities have fluctuated from a low of 5.3% in May 2022 to a high of 8.0% in April. During the first seven months of 2022, the average number of overdoses per month was approximately 836 (57 fatal and 779 nonfatal incidents )

Maine Cumulative Monthly Overdose Report for January through May 2022

The proportion of fatal overdoses averaged 7% of total overdoses over the course of 2021 (Table 1) and has stayed at that level during the first five months of 2022 as a whole, although the monthly proportion of fatalities fluctuated from a low of 6% in January and May to 8% in April. During the first five months of 2021, the average number of overdoses per month was 658 (49 fatal and 609 nonfatal cases). During the first five months of 2022, the average number of overdoses per month was 792 (53 fatal and 739 nonfatal cases). The proportion of fatalities in January–May 2022 (266) is 9.0% higher than the first five months of 2021 (244)
