The Morphologically Divided Redshift Distribution of Faint Galaxies
We have constructed a morphologically divided redshift distribution of faint
field galaxies using a statistically unbiased sample of 196 galaxies brighter
than I = 21.5 for which detailed morphological information (from the Hubble
Space Telescope) as well as ground-based spectroscopic redshifts are available.
Galaxies are classified into 3 rough morphological types according to their
visual appearance (E/S0s, Spirals, Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's), and redshift
distributions are constructed for each type. The most striking feature is the
abundance of low to moderate redshift Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's at I < 19.5. This
confirms that the faint end slope of the luminosity function (LF) is steep
(alpha < -1.4) for these objects. We also find that Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's are fairly
abundant at moderate redshifts, and this can be explained by strong luminosity
evolution. However, the normalization factor (or the number density) of the LF
of Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's is not much higher than that of the local LF of
Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's. Furthermore, as we go to fainter magnitudes, the abundance of
moderate to high redshift Irr/Pec's increases considerably. This cannot be
explained by strong luminosity evolution of the dwarf galaxy populations alone:
these Irr/Pec's are probably the progenitors of present day ellipticals and
spiral galaxies which are undergoing rapid star formation or merging with their
neighbors. On the other hand, the redshift distributions of E/S0s and spirals
are fairly consistent those expected from passive luminosity evolution, and are
only in slight disagreement with the non-evolving model.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures (published in ApJ
Size of Outbreaks Near the Epidemic Threshold
The spread of infectious diseases near the epidemic threshold is
investigated. Scaling laws for the size and the duration of outbreaks
originating from a single infected individual in a large susceptible population
are obtained. The maximal size of an outbreak n_* scales as N^{2/3} with N the
population size. This scaling law implies that the average outbreak size
scales as N^{1/3}. Moreover, the maximal and the average duration of an
outbreak grow as t_* ~ N^{1/3} and ~ ln N, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Ten-year change in sedentary behaviour, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic risk: independent associations and mediation analysis.
BACKGROUND: We aimed to study the independent associations of 10-year change in sedentary behaviour (SB), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and objectively measured cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), with concurrent change in clustered cardiometabolic risk and its individual components (waist circumference, fasting glucose, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure). We also determined whether associations were mediated by change in CRF (for SB and MVPA), waist circumference (for SB, MVPA and CRF) and dietary intake (for SB). METHODS: A population-based sample of 425 adults (age (mean±SD) 55.83±9.40; 65% men) was followed prospectively for 9.62±0.52 years. Participants self-reported SB and MVPA and performed a maximal cycle ergometer test to estimate peak oxygen uptake at baseline (2002-2004) and follow-up (2012-2014). Multiple linear regression and the product of coefficients method were used to examine independent associations and mediation effects, respectively. RESULTS: Greater increase in SB was associated with more detrimental change in clustered cardiometabolic risk, waist circumference, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, independently of change in MVPA. Greater decrease in MVPA was associated with greater decrease in HDL cholesterol and increase in clustered cardiometabolic risk, waist circumference and fasting glucose, independent of change in SB. Greater decrease in CRF was associated with more detrimental change in clustered cardiometabolic risk and all individual components. Change in CRF mediated the associations of change in SB and MVPA with change in clustered cardiometabolic risk, waist circumference and, only for MVPA, HDL cholesterol. Change in waist circumference mediated the associations between change in CRF and change in clustered cardiometabolic risk, fasting glucose, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Analytical solution of a one-dimensional Ising model with zero temperature dynamics
The one-dimensional Ising model with nearest neighbour interactions and the
zero-temperature dynamics recently considered by Lefevre and Dean -J. Phys. A:
Math. Gen. {\bf 34}, L213 (2001)- is investigated. By introducing a
particle-hole description, in which the holes are associated to the domain
walls of the Ising model, an analytical solution is obtained. The result for

Is diversity good?
Prominent ethical and policy issues such as affirmative action and female
enrollment in science and engineering revolve around the idea that diversity is
good. However, even though diversity is an ambiguous concept, a precise
definition is seldom provided. We show that diversity may be construed as a
factual description, a craving for symmetry, an intrinsic good, an instrumental
good, a symptom, or a side effect. These acceptions differ vastly in their
nature and properties. The first one cannot lead to any action and the second
one is mistaken. Diversity as intrinsic good is a mere opinion, which cannot be
concretely applied; moreover, the most commonly invoked forms of diversity
(sexual and racial) are not intrinsically good. On the other hand, diversity as
instrumental good can be evaluated empirically and can give rise to policies,
but these may be very weak. Finally, symptoms and side effects are not actually
about diversity. We consider the example of female enrollment in science and
engineering, interpreting the various arguments found in the literature in
light of this polysemy.

Mars Climate Database version 5
The Mars Climate Database (MCD) is a database of meteorological fields derived from General Circulation Model (GCM) numerical simulations [2,4] of the Martian atmosphere and validated using available observational data. The MCD includes complementary post-processing schemes such as high
spatial resolution interpolation of environmental data and means of reconstructing the variability thereof. The GCM is developed at LMD (Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique, Paris, France) in collaboration with several teams in Europe: LATMOS (Laboratoire Atmosphères, Milieux, Observations
Spatiales, Paris, France), the Open University (UK), the Oxford University (UK) and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia (Spain) with support from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). The MCD is freely distributed and intended to be useful and used in the framework of engineering applications as well as in the context of scientific studies which require accurate knowledge of the state of the Martian atmosphere. The Mars Climate Database (MCD) has over the years been distributed to more than 150 teams around the world. With the many improvements implemented in the GCM over the last few years, a new series of reference simulations have been run and compiled in a new version (version 5) of the Mars Climate Database, released in the first half of 2012
Solar-like oscillations in a massive star
Seismology of stars provides insight into the physical mechanisms taking
place in their interior, with modes of oscillation probing different layers.
Low-amplitude acoustic oscillations excited by turbulent convection were
detected four decades ago in the Sun and more recently in low-mass
main-sequence stars. Using data gathered by the Convection Rotation and
Planetary Transits mission, we report here on the detection of solar-like
oscillations in a massive star, V1449 Aql, which is a known large-amplitude (b

Individual and collective stock dynamics: intra-day seasonalities
We establish several new stylised facts concerning the intra-day
seasonalities of stock dynamics. Beyond the well known U-shaped pattern of the
volatility, we find that the average correlation between stocks increases
throughout the day, leading to a smaller relative dispersion between stocks.
Somewhat paradoxically, the kurtosis (a measure of volatility surprises)
reaches a minimum at the open of the market, when the volatility is at its
peak. We confirm that the dispersion kurtosis is a markedly decreasing function
of the index return. This means that during large market swings, the
idiosyncratic component of the stock dynamics becomes sub-dominant. In a
nutshell, early hours of trading are dominated by idiosyncratic or sector
specific effects with little surprises, whereas the influence of the market
factor increases throughout the day, and surprises become more frequent.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
