Testing a Theoretical Model Predicting Uncertainty and Depression in Patients Undergoing Renal Replacement Therapy in Korea

    Get PDF
PurposeThe purpose of this study was to test hypothesized relationships among experiences of uncertainty, depression, and social support in a sample of subjects undergoing renal replacement therapy in Korea.MethodsPath analysis was used in the sample to examine the relationships among depression and experiences of uncertainty, direct social support, indirect social support, and demographic variables. The size of the sample was 104 patients. Patients received either hemodialysis at one of three clinics or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.ResultsOne hundred and four subjects participated in the study. It was found that 6.2% of variance in uncertainty was predicted by direct social support (β =− .267), and 46.2% of variance in depression was predicted by three variables: direct social support (β =− .517), economic status (β = .299), and number of admissions (β = .275). Unlike the theoretical model, experiences of uncertainty could not predict depression.ConclusionThe effectiveness of social support in relieving experiences of uncertainty and consequently depression was shown in this study. Moreover, depression in this population could be predicted by direct social support, economic status, and frequency of admission. The study was needed to investigate the relationship between depression and experiences of uncertainty with time covariates, as well as to find the factors that influence depression in patients with chronic renal failure

Measurements of Location-Dependent Nitric Oxide Levels on Skin Surface in relation to Acupuncture Point

    Get PDF
Location-dependent skin surface’s partial nitric oxide pressure (pNO) is studied using highly sensitive amperometric NO microsensor with a small sensing area (diameter  = 76 μm). The pNO level of LI4 (Hegu) acupuncture point is measured and compared with the pNO level of nonacupuncture point. In addition, the mapping of pNO is carried out over the left wrist skin area one- as well as two-dimensionally. Statistically higher pNO levels near the position of acupuncture points than non-acupuncture points are observed consistently, implying tight relationship between the level of NO release of skin and acupuncture points. The amperometric planar NO microsensor successfully monitors the heterogeneity of skin pNO distribution in high spatial resolution due to its advantageous features such as high sensitivity and small sensing dimension. The current study suggests the direct connection between NO and acupuncture points and possibly provides beneficial information to understand physiological roles and basis of the acupuncture points

Economic Consequences Of IFRS Adoption In Korea: A Literature Review

    Get PDF
We provide a comprehensive review of academic research on the economic consequences of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption in Korea. We review 18 empirical studies on the economic consequences of IFRS adoption in Korea and classify them into six areas: (a) earnings quality, (b) comparability of financial statements, (c) value relevance, (d) analysts’ behavior, (e) information asymmetry, and (f) cost of capital and firm value. Our review suggests that IFRS adoption in Korea has generally afforded positive economic consequences. The limitations of the existing studies are discussed and various directions for future research are suggested

Heterogeneity of Skin Surface Oxygen Level of Wrist in Relation to Acupuncture Point

    Get PDF
The distribution of partial oxygen pressure (pO2) is analyzed for the anterior aspect of the left wrist with an amperometric oxygen microsensor composed of a small planar Pt disk-sensing area (diameter = 25 μm). The pO2 levels vary depending on the measurement location over the wrist skin, and they are systematically monitored in the analysis for both one-dimensional single line (along the wrist transverse crease) and two-dimensional square area of the wrist region. Relatively higher pO2 values are observed at certain area in close proximity to the position of acupuncture points with statistical significance, indicating strong relationship between oxygen and acupuncture point. The used oxygen microsensor is sensitive enough to detect the pO2 variation depending on the location. This study may provide information helpful to understand possible physiological roles of the acupuncture points

Adaptive Transient Fault Model for Sensor Attack Detection

    Get PDF
This paper considers the problem of sensor attack detection for multiple operating mode systems, building upon an existing attack detection method that uses a transient fault model with fixed parameters. For a multiple operating mode system, the existing method would have to use the most conservative model parameters to preserve the soundness in attack detection, thus not being effective in attack detection for some operating modes. To address this problem, we propose an adaptive transient fault model to use the appropriate parameter values in accordance with the change of the operating mode of the system. The benefit of our proposed system is demonstrated using real measurement data obtained from an unmanned ground vehicle
