    Dust Grain Orbital Behavior Around Ceres

    Many asteroids show indications they have undergone impacts with meteoroid particles having radii between 0.01 m and 1 m. During such impacts, small dust grains will be ejected at the impact site. The possibility of these dust grains (with radii greater than 2.2x10-6 m) forming a halo around a spherical asteroid (such as Ceres) is investigated using standard numerical integration techniques. The orbital elements, positions, and velocities are determined for particles with varying radii taking into account both the influence of gravity, radiation pressure, and the interplanetary magnetic field (for charged particles). Under the influence of these forces it is found that dust grains (under the appropriate conditions) can be injected into orbits with lifetimes in excess of one year. The lifetime of the orbits is shown to be highly dependent on the location of the ejection point as well as the angle between the surface normal and the ejection path. It is also shown that only particles ejected within 10 degrees relative to the surface tangential survive more than a few hours and that the longest-lived particles originate along a line perpendicular to the Ceres-Sun line.Comment: 8 pages, Presented at COSPAR '0

    Coulomb gap in one-dimensional disordered electron systems

    The density of states of one-dimensional disordered electron systems with long range Coulomb interaction is studied in the weak pinning limit.     Mixtures of independent component analyzers for EEG prediction

    This paper presents a new application of independent component analysis mixture modeling (ICAMM) for prediction of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. Demonstrations in prediction of missing EEG data in a working memory task using classic methods and an ICAMM-based algorithm are included. The performance of the methods is measured by using four error indicators: signal-to-interference (SIR) ratio, Kullback-Leibler divergence, correlation at lag zero and mean structural similarity index. The results show that the ICAMM-based algorithm outperforms the classical spherical splines method which is commonly used in EEG signal processing.     Bosonization Theory of Excitons in One-dimensional Narrow Gap Semiconductors

    Excitons in one-dimensional narrow gap semiconductors of anti-crossing quantum Hall edge states are investigated using a bosonization method. The excitonic states are studied by mapping the problem into a non-integrable sine-Gordon type model. We also find that many-body interactions lead to a strong enhancement of the band gap.     Toward stable 3D numerical evolutions of black-hole spacetimes

    Three dimensional (3D) numerical evolutions of static black holes with excision are presented. These evolutions extend to about 8000M, where M is the mass of the black hole. This degree of stability is achieved by using growth-rate estimates to guide the fine tuning of the parameters in a multi-parameter family of symmetric hyperbolic representations of the Einstein evolution equations.     Van Hove Singularities in disordered multichannel quantum wires and nanotubes

    We present a theory for the van Hove singularity (VHS) in the tunneling density of states (TDOS) of disordered multichannel quantum wires, in particular multi-wall carbon nanotubes. We assume close-by gates which screen off electron-electron interactions. Diagrammatic perturbation theory within a non-crossing approximation yields analytical expressions governing the disorder-induced broadening and shift of VHS's as new subbands are opened. This problem is nontrivial because the (lowest-order) Born approximation breaks down close to the VHS.
