Evolution of quantum systems with a scaling type of time-dependent Hamiltonians
We introduce a new class of quantum models with time-dependent Hamiltonians
of a special scaling form. By using a couple of time-dependent unitary
transformations, the time evolution of these models is expressed in terms of
related systems with time-independent Hamiltonians. The mapping of dynamics can
be performed in any dimension, for an arbitrary number of interacting particles
and for any type of the scaling interaction potential. The exact solvability of
a "dual" time-independent Hamiltonian automatically means the exact solvability
of the original problem with model time-dependence.Comment: 9 page
Evidence for an incommensurate magnetic resonance in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)
We study the effect of a magnetic field (applied along the c-axis) on the
low-energy, incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in superconducting
La(1.82)Sr(0.18)CuO(4). The incommensurate peaks at 9 meV, which in zero-field
were previously shown to sharpen in q on cooling below T_c [T. E. Mason et al.,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1604 (1996)], are found to broaden in q when a field of 10
T is applied. The applied field also causes scattered intensity to shift into
the spin gap. We point out that the response at 9 meV, though occurring at
incommensurate wave vectors, is comparable to the commensurate magnetic
resonance observed at higher energies in other cuprate superconductors.Comment: 8 pages, including 4 figure
Censusing manatees: a report on the feasibility of using aerial surveys and mark and recapture techniques to conduct a population survey of the West Indian Manatee
This report results from an invitation to review the needs and
prospects for capture-recapture and aerial census studies of the
manatee (Trichechus manatus) in Florida. Three aerial reconnaissance flights provided a
first hand view of manatee habitats, as follows: May 3, Suwannee
River to Kings Bay and Crystal River (Rathbun, Eberhardt), May 4,
Vero Beach to Ft. Lauderdale and Ft. Myers by way of Whitewater Bay
(Rose, Percival, Eberhardt), and May 5, Cape Canaveral to Jacksonville,
St. Johns River and Blue Spring (Rose, Kinnaird, Eberhardt). (24 page document
Toward the Evidence of the Accretion Disk Emission in the Symbiotic Star RR Tel
In this paper, we argue that in the symbiotic star RR Tel the existence of an
accretion disk around the hot companion is strongly implied by the
characteristic features exhibited by the Raman-scattered O VI lines around 6830
\AA and 7088 \AA. High degrees of polarization and double-peaked profiles in
the Raman-scattered lines and single-peak profiles for other emission lines are
interpreted as line-of-sight effects, where the H I scatterers near the giant
see an incident double-peaked profile and an observer with a low inclination
sees single-peak profiles. It is predicted that different mass concentrations
around the accretion disk formed by a dusty wind may lead to the disparate
ratios of the blue peak strength to the red counterpart observed in the 6830
and 7088 features. We discuss the evolutionary links between symbiotic stars
and bipolar protoplanetary nebulae and conclude that the Raman scattering
processes may play an important role in investigation of the physical
properties of these objects.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ Letter
Giant Shapiro Resonances in a Flux Driven Josephson Junction Necklace
We present a detailed study of the dynamic response of a ring of equally
spaced Josephson junctions to a time-periodic external flux, including
screening current effects. The dynamics are described by the resistively
shunted Josephson junction model, appropriate for proximity effect junctions,
and we include Faraday's law for the flux. We find that the time-averaged
characteristics show novel {\em subharmonic giant Shapiro voltage resonances},
which strongly depend on having phase slips or not, on , on the inductance
and on the external drive frequency. We include an estimate of the possible
experimental parameters needed to observe these quantized voltage spikes.Comment: 8 pages RevTeX, 3 figures available upon reques
Relativistic Quantum Thermodynamics of Ideal Gases in 2 Dimensions
In this work we study the behavior of relativistic ideal Bose and Fermi gases
in two space dimensions. Making use of polylogarithm functions we derive a
closed and unified expression for their densities. It is shown that both type
of gases are essentially inequivalent, and only in the non-relativistic limit
the spinless and equal mass Bose and Fermi gases are equivalent as known in the
literature.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
[Colored solutions of Yang-Baxter equation from representations of U_{q}gl(2)]
We study the Hopf algebra structure and the highest weight representation of
a multiparameter version of . The commutation relations as well as
other Hopf algebra maps are explicitly given. We show that the multiparameter
universal matrix can be constructed directly as a quantum double
intertwiner, without using Reshetikhin's transformation. An interesting feature
automatically appears in the representation theory: it can be divided into two
types, one for generic , the other for being a root of unity. When
applying the representation theory to the multiparameter universal
matrix, the so called standard and nonstandard colored solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation is obtained.Comment: [14]pages, latex, no figure
Finding The Sign Of A Function Value By Binary Cellular Automaton
Given a continuous function , suppose that the sign of only has
finitely many discontinuous points in the interval . We show how to use
a sequence of one dimensional deterministic binary cellular automata to
determine the sign of where is the (number) density of 1s in
an arbitrarily given bit string of finite length provided that satisfies
certain technical conditions.Comment: Revtex, uses amsfonts, 10 page
