    Renormalon Subtraction from the Average Plaquette and the Gluon Condensate

    A Borel resummation scheme of subtracting the perturbative contribution from the average plaquette is proposed using the bilocal expansion of Borel transform. It is shown that the remnant of the average plaquette, after subtraction of the perturbative contribution, scales as a dim-4 condensate.     Geometrical Interpretation of BRST Symmetry in Topological Yang-Mills-Higgs Theory

    We study topological Yang-Mills-Higgs theories in two and three dimensions and topological Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions in a unified framework of superconnections. In this framework, we first show that a classical action of topological Yang-Mills type can provide all three classical actions of these theories via appropriate projections. Then we obtain the BRST and anti-BRST transformation rules encompassing these three topological theories from an extended definition of curvature and a geometrical requirement of Bianchi identity. This is an extension of Perry and Teo's work in the topological Yang-Mills case. Finally, comparing this result with our previous treatment in which we used the ``modified horizontality condition", we provide a meaning of Bianchi identity from the BRST symmetry viewpoint and thus interpret the BRST symmetry in a geometrical setting.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX fil

    Photoreceptors for a light biotransducer: a comparative study of the electrical responses of two (type-1)-opsins

    The increasing interest in photoactivated proteins as natural replacement of standard inorganic materials in photocells drives to the compared analysis of bacteriorhodopsin and proteorhodopsin, two widely diffused proteins belonging to the family of \textit{type-1} opsins. These proteins share similar behaviours but exhibit relevant differences in the sequential chain of the amino acids constituting their tertiary structure. The use of an impedance network analogue to model the protein main features provides a microscopic interpretation of a set of experiments on their photoconductance properties. In particular, this model links the protein electrical responses to the tertiary structure and to the interactions among neighbouring amino acids. The same model is also used to predict the small-signal response in terms of the Nyquist plot. Interesting enough, these rhodopsins are found to behave like a wide gap semiconductor with intrinsic conductivities of the order of 10710^{-7} S/cm.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figure

    New Deal policies and the persistence of the Great Depression: a general equilibrium analysis

    There are two striking aspects of the recovery from the Great Depression in the United States: the recovery was very weak and real wages in several sectors rose significantly above trend. These data contrast sharply with neoclassical theory, which predicts a strong recovery with low real wages. We evaluate the contribution of New Deal cartelization policies designed to limit competition and increase labor bargaining power to the persistence of the Depression. We develop a model of the bargaining process between labor and firms that occurred with these policies, and embed that model within a multi-sector dynamic general equilibrium model. We find that New Deal cartelization policies are an important factor in accounting for the post-1933 Depression. We also find that the key depressing element of New Deal policies was not collusion per se, but rather the link between paying high wages and collusion.Depressions

    Determination of electron-nucleus collision geometry with forward neutrons

    There are a large number of physics programs one can explore in electron-nucleus collisions at a future electron-ion collider. Collision geometry is very important in these studies, while the measurement for an event-by-event geometric control is rarely discussed in the prior deep inelastic scattering experiments off a nucleus. This paper seeks to provide some detailed studies on the potential of tagging collision geometries through forward neutron multiplicity measurements with a zero degree calorimeter. This type of geometry handle, if achieved, can be extremely beneficial in constraining nuclear effects for the electron-nucleus program at an electron-ion collider

    Application of adaptive antenna techniques to future commercial satellite communication

    The purpose of this contract was to identify the application of adaptive antenna technique in future operational commercial satellite communication systems and to quantify potential benefits. The contract consisted of two major subtasks. Task 1, Assessment of Future Commercial Satellite System Requirements, was generally referred to as the Adaptive section. Task 2 dealt with Pointing Error Compensation Study for a Multiple Scanning/Fixed Spot Beam Reflector Antenna System and was referred to as the reconfigurable system. Each of these tasks was further sub-divided into smaller subtasks. It should also be noted that the reconfigurable system is usually defined as an open-loop system while the adaptive system is a closed-loop system. The differences between the open- and closed-loop systems were defined. Both the adaptive and reconfigurable systems were explained and the potential applications of such systems were presented in the context of commercial communication satellite systems
