Self-dual Maxwell Chern-Simons Solitons In 1+1 Dimensions
We study the domain wall soliton solutions in the relativistic self-dual
Maxwell Chern-Simons model in 1+1 dimensions obtained by the dimensional
reduction of the 2+1 model. Both topological and nontopological self-dual
solutions are found in this case. A la BPS dyons here the Bogomol'ny bound on
the energy is expressed in terms of two conserved quantities. We discuss the
underlying supersymmetry. Nonrelativistic limit of this model is also
considered and static, nonrelativistic self-dual soliton solutions are
obtained.Comment: 18 pages RevTex, 2 figures included, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Metallic characteristics in superlattices composed of insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3
We report on the electronic properties of superlattices composed of three
different antiferromagnetic insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 grown on SrTiO3
substrates. Photoemission spectra obtained by tuning the x-ray energy at the Mn
2p -> 3d edge show a Fermi cut-off, indicating metallic behavior mainly
originating from Mn e_g electrons. Furthermore, the density of states near the
Fermi energy and the magnetization obey a similar temperature dependence,
suggesting a correlation between the spin and charge degrees of freedom at the
interfaces of these oxides
The false vacuum bubble nucleation due to a nonminimally coupled scalar field
We study the possibility of forming the false vacuum bubble nucleated within
the true vacuum background via the true-to-false vacuum phase transition in
curved spacetime. We consider a semiclassical Euclidean bubble in the Einstein
theory of gravity with a nonminimally coupled scalar field. In this paper we
present the numerical computations as well as the approximate analytical
computations. We mention the evolution of the false vacuum bubble after
nucleation.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, References added, minor correctio
Predictability of reset switching voltages in unipolar resistance switching
In unipolar resistance switching of NiO capacitors, Joule heating in the
conducting channels should cause a strong nonlinearity in the low resistance
state current-voltage (I-V) curves. Due to the percolating nature of the
conducting channels, the reset current IR, can be scaled to the nonlinear
coefficient Bo of the I-V curves. This scaling relationship can be used to
predict reset voltages, independent of NiO capacitor size; it can also be
applied to TiO2 and FeOy capacitors. Using this relation, we developed an error
correction scheme to provide a clear window for separating reset and set
voltages in memory operations
One-dimensional transport in polymer nanofibers
We report our transport studies in quasi one-dimensional (1D) conductors -
helical polyacetylene fibers doped with iodine and the data analysis for other
polymer single fibers and tubes. We found that at 30 K < T < 300 K the
conductance and the current-voltage characteristics follow the power law: G(T)
~ T^alpha with alpha ~ 2.2-7.2 and I(V) ~ V^betta with betta ~ 2-5.7. Both G(T)
and I(V) show the features characteristic of 1D systems such as Luttinger
liquid or Wigner crystal. The relationship between our results and theories for
tunneling in 1D systems is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Letter
Zero-Point cooling and low heating of trapped 111Cd+ ions
We report on ground state laser cooling of single 111Cd+ ions confined in
radio-frequency (Paul) traps. Heating rates of trapped ion motion are measured
for two different trapping geometries and electrode materials, where no effort
was made to shield the electrodes from the atomic Cd source. The low measured
heating rates suggest that trapped 111Cd+ ions may be well-suited for
experiments involving quantum control of atomic motion, including applications
in quantum information science.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to PR
Self-DUal SU(3) Chern-Simons Higgs Systems
We explore self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems with the local and
global symmetries where the matter field lies in the adjoint
representation. We show that there are three degenerate vacua of different
symmetries and study the unbroken symmetry and particle spectrum in each
vacuum. We classify the self-dual configurations into three types and study
their properties.Comment: Columbia Preprint CU-TP-635, 19 page
