    Krytox Lubrication Tape Study

    Get PDF
The use of Krytox, a fluorinated oil, as a tape surface lubricant was studied for a wideband video tape recorder. In spite of the 5 to 1 head wear reduction credited to the surface lubricant, the resultant head life fell short of the 1500 hour goal

Hybrid bearings for LH2 and LO2 turbopumps

    Get PDF
Hybrid combinations of hydrostatic and ball bearings can improve bearing performance for liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen turbopumps. Analytic studies were conducted to optimize hybrid bearing designs for the SSME-type turbopump conditions. A method to empirically determine damping coefficients was devised. Four hybrid bearing configurations were designed, and three were fabricated. Six hybrid and hydrostatic-only bearing configurations will be tested for steady-state and transient performance, and quantification of damping coefficients. The initial tests were conducted with the liquid hydrogen bearing

Satellite Telemetry Automatic Reduction System /STARS 2/, a fully automatic computer-controlled telemetry data processor, maximizes data recovery, reduces turnaround time, increases flexibility, and improves operational efficiency. The system incorporates a CDC 3200 computer as its central element

Coherence scale of the two-dimensional Kondo Lattice model

A doped hole in the two-dimensional half-filled Kondo lattice model with exchange J and hopping t has momentum (pi,pi) irrespective of the coupling J/t. The quasiparticle residue of the doped hole, Z_{(\pi, \pi)}, tracks the Kondo scale, T_K, of the corresponding single impurity model. Those results stem from high precision quantum Monte Carlo simulations on lattices up to 12 X 12. Accounting for small dopings away from half-filling within a rigid band approximation, this result implies that the effective mass of the charge carriers at the Fermi level tracks 1/T_K or equivalently that the coherence temperature T_{coh} \propto T_K. This results is consistent with the large-N saddle point of the SU(N) symmetric Kondo lattice model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Post 'Celtic Tiger' Ireland, Silver Vigilantes and Public Sociology: Protesting Against Global Neoliberalisation

    Get PDF
It is not just publicly funded universities that are facing a cold and hard future in the aftershock of the 2008 global banking crisis. Nations, such as Ireland, are similarly affected as states seek to appease 'the markets' and cover private banks' losses at the public's expense. As this wave of neoliberalisation, or market fundamentalism, proceeds we may ask: what is the role of sociology? Drawing from an exploratory study of financial activism, notably silver vigilantism and the Crash JP Morgan Campaign, this paper endorses global public sociology among threatened publics. As per Michael Burawoy's calls for public sociology, this entails promoting reflexive knowledge and democratic dialogue in the defence of civil society. After outlining the core tenets, strengths and weaknesses of silver vigilantism, the role of public sociology and the need for further research are underscored as the economic crisis continues in post 'Celtic Tiger' Ireland and beyond.Public Sociology; Neoliberalisation; Money; Protest; the Internet

Searching the Físchlár-NEWS archive on a mobile device

    Get PDF
The Físchlár-NEWS system provides web-based access to an archive of digitally recorded TV News broadcasts over several months, and has been operational for over a year. Users can browse keyframes, search teletext and have streamed video playback of segments of news broadcasts to their desktops. This paper reports on the development of mFíschlár-NEWS, a version of Físchlár-NEWS which operates on a mobile PDA over a wireless LAN connection. In the design and development of mFíschlár-NEWS we have realised that mobile access to a digital library of video materials is more than just the desktop system on a smaller screen, and the functionality and role that information retrieval techniques play in the mFíschlár-NEWS system are very different to what is present in the desktop system. The paper describes the design, interface, functionality and operational status of this mobile access to a video library
