Application of adaptive antenna techniques to future commercial satellite communication
The purpose of this contract was to identify the application of adaptive antenna technique in future operational commercial satellite communication systems and to quantify potential benefits. The contract consisted of two major subtasks. Task 1, Assessment of Future Commercial Satellite System Requirements, was generally referred to as the Adaptive section. Task 2 dealt with Pointing Error Compensation Study for a Multiple Scanning/Fixed Spot Beam Reflector Antenna System and was referred to as the reconfigurable system. Each of these tasks was further sub-divided into smaller subtasks. It should also be noted that the reconfigurable system is usually defined as an open-loop system while the adaptive system is a closed-loop system. The differences between the open- and closed-loop systems were defined. Both the adaptive and reconfigurable systems were explained and the potential applications of such systems were presented in the context of commercial communication satellite systems

Distribution of extremes in the fluctuations of two-dimensional equilibrium interfaces
We investigate the statistics of the maximal fluctuation of two-dimensional
Gaussian interfaces. Its relation to the entropic repulsion between rigid walls
and a confined interface is used to derive the average maximal fluctuation and the asymptotic behavior of the whole
distribution for finite with and the interface size and
tension, respectively. The standardized form of does not depend on
or , but shows a good agreement with Gumbel's first asymptote distribution
with a particular non-integer parameter. The effects of the correlations among
individual fluctuations on the extreme value statistics are discussed in our

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the isotropic three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass
We study the Heisenberg spin glass by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations for
sizes up to 32^3, down to temperatures below the transition temperature claimed
in earlier work. The data for the larger sizes show more marginal behavior than
that for the smaller sizes, indicating the lower critical dimension is close
to, and possibly equal to three. We find that the spins and chiralities behave

The U.S. system for measuring cross-border investment in securities: a primer with a discussion of recent developments
The tremendous growth in cross-border securities investment in recent years has called attention to the systems used by the United States and other countries to measure international securities flows and holdings. Ideally, the data gathered by the United States could tell us the extent to which foreign investors hold U.S. securities, the types of securities held, and the countries in which the securities are held, for example, and could identify trends in investment. This article looks at how well the data shed light on these topics. Special attention is given to the system's design and the implications of the design for data analysis. Searches on star graphs and equivalent oracle problems
We examine a search on a graph among a number of different kinds of objects
(vertices), one of which we want to find. In a standard graph search, all of
the vertices are the same, except for one, the marked vertex, and that is the
one we wish to find. We examine the case in which the unmarked vertices can be
of different types, so the background against which the search is done is not
uniform. We find that the search can still be successful, but the probability
of success is lower than in the uniform background case, and that probability
decreases with the number of types of unmarked vertices. We also show how the
graph searches can be rephrased as equivalent oracle problems
A relativistic calculation of super-Hubble suppression of inflation with thermal dissipation
We investigated the evolution of the primordial density perturbations
produced by inflation with thermal dissipation. A full relativistic analysis on
the evolution of initial perturbations from the warm inflation era to a
radiation-dominated universe has been developed. The emphasis is on tracking
the ratio between the adiabatic and the isocurvature mode of the initial
perturbations. This result is employed to calculate a testable factor: the
super-Hubble suppression of the power spectrum of the primordial perturbations.
We show that based on the warm inflation scenario, the super-Hubble suppression
factor, , for an inflation with thermal dissipation is at least 0.5. This
prediction does not depend on the details of the model parameters. If is
larger than 0.5, it implies that the friction parameter is larger than

Incorporation of Nitrogen into Organics Produced by Fischer-Tropsch Type Chemistry
Laboratory simulations have demonstrated that hydrothermal systems have the potential to produce a range of organic compounds through Fischer-Tropsch type (FTT) chemistry. The distribution of products depends on several factors, including the abundance and composition of feed-stock molecules, reaction temperature, and the physical and chemical characteristics of catalytic materials included in the reactions. The majority of studies per-formed to date have focused solely on inclusion of CO2 or CO and H2 as the carbon, oxygen and hydrogen sources, which limits the possible products to hydro-carbons, alcohols and carboxylic acids. A few studies have included nitrogen in the form of ammonia, which led to the production of amino acids and nitrogenous bases; and a separate suite of studies included sulfur as sulfide minerals or H2S, which yielded products such as thiols and amino acids. Although these demonstrations provide compelling evidence that FTT reactions can produce compounds of interest for the origins of life, such reactions have been conducted under a very limited range of conditions and the synthetic reaction mechanisms have generally not been well-characterized. As a consequence, it is difficult to extrapolate these results to geologic systems or to evaluate how variations in reactant compositions would affect the distribution of products over time. We have begun a series of laboratory experiments that will incorporate a range of precursor molecules in varying compositions to determine how these variables affect the relative amounts and speciation of life-essential elements in organic molecules produced under FTT conditions.
