    A Study of Adolescent Depression Among Middle School Students

    Adolescent depression and teenage suicide should not be neglected and underestimated. While mental health is one of the ten health indicators that Healthy People 20 I 0 is focused on, and there are goals for the health community to work on, statistics are showing that teenagers in a county in Northern California were at high risk for mental health problem. This study was an introductory screening of the depression level of 7th graders attending middle school, and explored sources of adolescent perceived stress and routes of assistance. Results of the study show that almost one in every five 7th graders has symptoms of depression, and Asian students have the highest prevalence and a higher level of depression. Although most students are aware of counseling services being offered at school, only a few students have used the service for personal reasons. School nurses can play an important role in assessment, intervention, and referrals for students at risk for mental health problems

    Group Size Effect on the Success of Wolves Hunting

    Social foraging shows unexpected features such as the existence of a group size threshold to accomplish a successful hunt. Above this threshold, additional individuals do not increase the probability of capturing the prey. Recent direct observations of wolves in Yellowstone Park show that the group size threshold when hunting its most formidable prey, bison, is nearly three times greater than when hunting elk, a prey that is considerably less challenging to capture than bison. These observations provide empirical support to a computational particle model of group hunting which was previously shown to be effective in explaining why hunting success peaks at apparently small pack sizes when hunting elk. The model is based on considering two critical distances between wolves and prey: the minimal safe distance at which wolves stand from the prey, and the avoidance distance at which wolves move away from each other when they approach the prey. The minimal safe distance is longer when the prey is more dangerous to hunt. We show that the model explains effectively that the group size threshold is greater when the minimal safe distance is longer. Although both distances are longer when the prey is more dangerous, they contribute oppositely to the value of the group size threshold: the group size threshold is smaller when the avoidance distance is longer. This unexpected mechanism gives rise to a global increase of the group size threshold when considering bison with respect to elk, but other prey more dangerous than elk can lead to specific critical distances that can give rise to the same group size threshold. Our results show that the computational model can guide further research on group size effects, suggesting that more experimental observations should be obtained for other kind of prey as e.g. moose.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, 8 references.     College as Capability Enhancement

    In this thesis I wanted to apply the Sen’s framework in Development as Freedom to college campuses. In my experience at Claremont McKenna College, I have seen how some students are able to take advantage of the resources better than others. Given that we were all accepted by the same admissions office, I always questioned why did some students know how to take advantage of the system. In order to explore this, I first discuss Sen’s capability approach. Then, I show how the capability approach is more comprehensive than social networking theory and William Deresiewicz’s account on elite colleges. Finally, I will give my own policy recommendations with Sen’s capability approach in mind. A college that better supports individuals is important because it will allow everyone to enhance their capabilities and pursue the life that they have reason to value

    The equilibrium model for the effect of temperature on enzymes: Insights and implications

    A new, experimentally-validated “Equilibrium Model” describes the effect of temperature on enzymes, and provides a new mechanism for the reversible loss of enzyme activity with temperature. It incorporates two new, fundamental parameters that allow a complete description of the effect of temperature on enzyme activity: ΔHeq and Teq. ΔHeq emerges as an intrinsic and quantitative measure of enzyme eurythermal adaptation, while Teq, the equilibrium temperature, has fundamental and technological significance for our understanding of the effect of temperature on enzymatic reactions. For biotechnological purposes, these parameters need to be considered when enzymes are applied or engineered for activity at high temperatures

    Random dopant-induced variability in Si-InAs nanowire tunnel FETs: a quantum transport simulation study

    In this letter, we report a quantum transport simu- lation study of the impact of Random Discrete Dopants (RDD)s on Si-InAs nanowire p-type Tunnel FETs. The band-to-band tunneling is simulated using the non-equilibrium Green’s func- tion formalism in effective mass approximation, implementing a two-band model of the imaginary dispersion. We have found that RDDs induce strong variability not only in the OFF-state but also in the ON-state current of the TFETs. Contrary to the nearly normal distribution of the RDD induced ON-current variations in conventional CMOS transistors, the TFET’s ON- currents variations are described by a logarithmic distribution. The distributions of other Figures of Merit (FoM) such as threshold voltage and subthreshold swing are also reported. The variability in the FoM is analysed by studying the correlation between the number and the position of the dopants

    Structure-based Discovery of Novel Small Molecule Wnt Signaling Inhibitors by Targeting the Cysteine-rich Domain of Frizzled.

    Frizzled is the earliest discovered glycosylated Wnt protein receptor and is critical for the initiation of Wnt signaling. Antagonizing Frizzled is effective in inhibiting the growth of multiple tumor types. The extracellular N terminus of Frizzled contains a conserved cysteine-rich domain that directly interacts with Wnt ligands. Structure-based virtual screening and cell-based assays were used to identify five small molecules that can inhibit canonical Wnt signaling and have low IC50 values in the micromolar range. NMR experiments confirmed that these compounds specifically bind to the Wnt binding site on the Frizzled8 cysteine-rich domain with submicromolar dissociation constants. Our study confirms the feasibility of targeting the Frizzled cysteine-rich domain as an effective way of regulating canonical Wnt signaling. These small molecules can be further optimized into more potent therapeutic agents for regulating abnormal Wnt signaling by targeting Frizzled
