Effective Potential for Uniform Magnetic Fields through Pauli Interaction

We have calculated the explicit form of the real and imaginary parts of the effective potential for uniform magnetic fields which interact with spin-1/2 fermions through the Pauli interaction. It is found that the non-vanishing imaginary part develops for a magnetic field stronger than a critical field, whose strength is the ratio of the fermion mass to its magnetic moment. This implies the instability of the uniform magnetic field beyond the critical field strength to produce fermion pairs with the production rate density w(x)=m424π(∣μB∣m−1)3(∣μB∣m+3)w(x)=\frac{m^{4}}{24\pi}(\frac{|\mu B|}{m}-1)^{3}(\frac{|\mu B|}{m}+3) in the presence of Pauli interaction.Comment: 9 pages with 1 figur

Magnetic Phase Transitions in One-dimensional Strongly Attractive Three-Component Ultracold Fermions

We investigate the nature of trions, pairing and quantum phase transitions in one-dimensional strongly attractive three-component ultracold fermions in external fields. Exact results for the groundstate energy, critical fields, magnetization and phase diagrams are obtained analytically from the Bethe ansatz solutions. Driven by Zeeman splitting, the system shows exotic phases of trions, bound pairs, a normal Fermi liquid and four mixtures of these states. Particularly, a smooth phase transition from a trionic phase into a pairing phase occurs as the highest hyperfine level separates from the two lower energy levels. In contrast, there is a smooth phase transition from the trionic phase into a normal Fermi liquid as the lowest level separates from the two higher levels.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor revisions to text, replacement figure, refs added and update

On-line adaptation of the SCHMM parameters based on the segmental quasi-bayes learning for speech recognition

On-line quasi-Bayes adaptation of the mixture coefficients and mean vectors in semicontinuous hidden Markov model (SCHMM) is studied. The viability of the proposed algorithm is confirmed and the related practical issues are addressed in a specific application of on-line speaker adaptation using a 26-word English alphabet vocabulary.published_or_final_versio

Ka-band MMIC microstrip array for high rate communications

    Get PDF
In a recent technology assessment of alternative communication systems for the space exploration initiative (SEI), Ka-band (18 to 40 GHz) communication technology was identified to meet the mission requirements of telecommunication, navigation, and information management. Compared to the lower frequency bands, Ka-band antennas offer higher gain and broader bandwidths; thus, they are more suitable for high data rate communications. Over the years, NASA has played an important role in monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) phased array technology development, and currently, has an ongoing contract with Texas Instrument (TI) to develop a modular Ka-band MMIC microstrip subarray (NAS3-25718). The TI contract emphasizes MMIC integration technology development and stipulates using existing MMIC devices to minimize the array development cost. The objective of this paper is to present array component technologies and integration techniques used to construct the subarray modules

Bayesian adaptive learning of the parameters of hidden Markov model for speech recognition

    Get PDF
A theoretical framework for Bayesian adaptive training of the parameters of a discrete hidden Markov model (DHMM) and of a semi-continuous HMM (SCHMM) with Gaussian mixture state observation densities is presented. In addition to formulating the forward-backward MAP (maximum a posteriori) and the segmental MAP algorithms for estimating the above HMM parameters, a computationally efficient segmental quasi-Bayes algorithm for estimating the state-specific mixture coefficients in SCHMM is developed. For estimating the parameters of the prior densities, a new empirical Bayes method based on the moment estimates is also proposed. The MAP algorithms and the prior parameter specification are directly applicable to training speaker adaptive HMMs. Practical issues related to the use of the proposed techniques for HMM-based speaker adaptation are studied. The proposed MAP algorithms are shown to be effective especially in the cases in which the training or adaptation data are limited.published_or_final_versio

Fermionic R-operator approach for the small-polaron model with open boundary condition

Exact integrability and algebraic Bethe ansatz of the small-polaron model with the open boundary condition are discussed in the framework of the quantum inverse scattering method (QISM). We employ a new approach where the fermionic R-operator which consists of fermion operators is a key object. It satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation and the reflection equation with its corresponding K-operator. Two kinds of 'super-transposition' for the fermion operators are defined and the dual reflection equation is obtained. These equations prove the integrability and the Bethe ansatz equation which agrees with the one obtained from the graded Yang-Baxter equation and the graded reflection equations.Comment: 10 page
