    Coupled channel study of K+ΛK^+\Lambda photoproduction

    A coupled channel model with γN\gamma N, KYKY and πN\pi N channels has been used to analyze the recent data of γpK+Λ\gamma p \to K^+ \Lambda. The non-resonant interactions within the subspace KYπNKY \oplus \pi N are derived from effective Lagrangians using a unitary transformation method. The direct photoproduction reaction is obtained from a chiral constituent quark model with SU(6)O(3)SU(6)\otimes O(3) breaking.     The large-signal behaviors of a regulator depend largely on the type of power circuit topology and control. Thus, for maximum flexibility, it is best to develop models for each functional block a independent modules. A regulator can then be configured by collecting appropriate pre-defined modules for each functional block. In order to complete the component model generation for a comprehensive spacecraft power system, the following modules were developed: solar array switching unit and control; shunt regulators; and battery discharger. The capability of each module is demonstrated using a simplified Direct Energy Transfer (DET) system. Large-signal behaviors of solar array power systems were analyzed. Stability of the solar array system operating points with a nonlinear load is analyzed. The state-plane analysis illustrates trajectories of the system operating point under various conditions. Stability and transient responses of the system operating near the solar array's maximum power point are also analyzed. The solar array system mode of operation is described using the DET spacecraft power system. The DET system is simulated for various operating conditions. Transfer of the software program CAMAPPS (Computer Aided Modeling and Analysis of Power Processing Systems) to NASA/GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center) was accomplished

    The shuttle program provided a challenge to the aerothermodynamicist due to the complexity of the flow field around the vehicle during ascent, since the configuration causes multiple shock interactions between the elements. Wind tunnel tests provided data for the prediction of the ascent design heating environment which involves both plume and aerodynamic heating phenomena. The approach for the heating methodology based on ground test firings and the use of the wind tunnel data to formulate the math models is discussed

    Quantifying mixed-state quantum entanglement by optimal entanglement witness

    We develop an approach of quantifying entanglement in mixed quantum states by the optimal entanglement witness operator. We identify the convex set of mixed states for which a single witness provides the exact value of an entanglement measure, and show that the convexity, properties, and symmetries of entanglement or of a target state considerably fix the form of the optimal witness. This greatly reduces difficulty in computing and experimentally determining entanglement measures. As an example, we show how to experimentally quantify bound entanglement in four-qubit noisy Smolin states and three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement under white noise. For general measures and states, we provide a numerical method to efficiently optimize witness.Comment: Supplemental material is include

    Boundary correlation function of fixed-to-free bcc operators in square-lattice Ising model

    We calculate the boundary correlation function of fixed-to-free boundary condition changing operators in the square-lattice Ising model. The correlation function is expressed in four different ways using 2×22\times2 block Toeplitz determinants. We show that these can be transformed into a scalar Toeplitz determinant when the size of the matrix is even. To know the asymptotic behavior of the correlation function at large distance we calculate the asymptotic behavior of this scalar Toeplitz determinant using the Szeg\"o's theorem and the Fisher-Hartwig theorem. At the critical temperature we confirm the power-law behavior of the correlation function predicted by conformal field theory

    Coupled-channel study of gamma p --> K+ Lambda

    A coupled-channel (CC) approach has been developed to investigate kaon photoproduction on the nucleon. In addition to direct K+ Lambda production, our CC approach accounts for strangeness production including K+ Lambda final state interactions with both pi0 p and pi+ n intermediate states. Calculations for the gamma p --> K+ Lambda reaction have been performed, and compared with the recent data from SAPHIR, with emphasis on the CC effects. We show that the CC effects are significant at the level of inducing 20% changes on total cross sections; thereby, demonstrating the need to include pi N channels to correctly describe the gamma p --> K+ Lambda reaction.Comment: 12 pages, 6 eps figures, uses elsart.cls, submitted to Phys.Lett.B; v2: added paragraph in section

    Inference of stress and texture from angular dependence of ultrasonic plate mode velocities

    The theory for the angular dependence of the ultrasonic wave velocity in a symmetry plane of an orthorhombic, stressed material is presented. The two waves having polarizations in this plane are shown to have velocities which can be estimated from measurements of the SH sub 0 and S sub 0 guided modes of a thin plate: the relationship being exact for the SH sub 0 mode and requiring a 10% correction for the S sub 0 mode at long wavelength. It is then shown how stress and texture can be independently inferred from various features of the angular dependence of these two velocities. From the SH sub 0 data, the ability to determine the directions and differences in magnitudes of principal stresses is described and supported by experimental data on several materials. From a combination of the SH sub 0 and S sub 0 data, a procedure is proposed for determining the coefficients W sub 400, W sub 420 and W sub 440 of an expansion of the crystallite orientation distribution function in terms of generalized Legendre functions. Possible applications in process control are indicated
