Increased Risk of Ischemic Stroke during Sleep in Apneic Patients.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:The literature indicates that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases the risk of ischemic stroke. However, the causal relationship between OSA and ischemic stroke is not well established. This study examined whether preexisting OSA symptoms affect the onset of acute ischemic stroke. METHODS:We investigated consecutive patients who were admitted with acute ischemic stroke, using a standardized protocol including the Berlin Questionnaire on symptoms of OSA prior to stroke. The collected stroke data included the time of the stroke onset, risk factors, and etiologic subtypes. The association between preceding OSA symptoms and wake-up stroke (WUS) was assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS:We identified 260 subjects with acute ischemic strokes with a definite onset time, of which 25.8% were WUS. The presence of preexisting witnessed or self-recognized sleep apnea was the only risk factor for WUS (adjusted odds ratio=2.055, 95% confidence interval=1.035-4.083, p=0.040). CONCLUSIONS:Preexisting symptoms suggestive of OSA were associated with the occurrence of WUS. This suggests that OSA contributes to ischemic stroke not only as a predisposing risk factor but also as a triggering factor. Treating OSA might therefore be beneficial in preventing stroke, particularly that occurring during sleep
Panel Data Models with Multiple Time-Varying Individual Effects
This paper considers a panel data model with time-varying individual effects. The data are assumed to contain a large number of cross-sectional units repeatedly observed over a fixed number of time periods. The model has a feature of the fixed-effects model in that the effects are assumed to be correlated with the regressors. The unobservable individual effects are assumed to have a factor structure. For consistent estimation of the model, it is important to estimate the true number of factors. We propose a generalized methods of moments procedure by which both the number of factors and the regression coefficients can be consistently estimated. Some important identification issues are also discussed. Excavation Behaviour of Soft Marine Clay Deposit in South Korea
In this paper, it is demonstrated that the shear strength of soil around jet grouting pile may be increased with the elapsed curing time of grouting cement. Because soil around pile initially experiences the disturbance due to the jet grouting work process, the soil gains the strength as grouting cement is cured and the soil is stabilized. In addition, excavation behaviour of marine clay at sheet pile wall and strut excavation site is analyzed using measured data from inclinometers, load cells, and strain gauges. The time to install supporting system and not only depth to but also area of excavation are very important factors for analyzing excavation behavior of soft marine clay
The Light and Period Variations of the Eclipsing Binary BX Draconis
New CCD photometric observations of BX Dra were obtained for 26 nights from
2009 April to 2010 June. The long-term photometric behaviors of the system are
presented from detailed studies of the period and light variations, based on
the historical data and our new observations. All available light curves
display total eclipses at secondary minima and inverse O'Connell effects with
Max I fainter than Max II, which are satisfactorily modeled by adding the
slightly time-varying hot spot on the primary star. A total of 87 times of
minimum light spanning over about 74 yrs, including our 22 timing measurements,
were used for ephemeris computations. Detailed analysis of the O-C diagram
showed that the orbital period has changed in combinations with an upward
parabola and a sinusoidal variation. The continuous period increase with a rate
of +5.65 \times 10^-7 d yr^-1 is consistent with that calculated from the
Wilson-Devinney synthesis code. It can be interpreted as a mass transfer from
the secondary to the primary star at a rate of 2.74 \times 10^-7 M\odot yr^-1,
which is one of the largest rates for contact systems. The most likely
explanation of the sinusoidal variation with a period of 30.2 yrs and a
semi-amplitude of 0.0062 d is a light-traveltime effect due to the existence of
a circumbinary object. We suggest that BX Dra is probably a triple system,
consisting of a primary star with a spectral type of F0, its secondary
component of spectral type F1-2, and an unseen circumbinary object with a
minimum mass of M3 = 0.23 M\odot.Comment: 24 pages, including 5 figures and 9 tables, accepted for publication

Oleate Prevents Palmitate-Induced Atrophy via Modulation of Mitochondrial ROS Production in Skeletal Myotubes
Accumulation of saturated fatty acids contributes to lipotoxicity-related insulin resistance and atrophy in skeletal muscle. Conversely, unsaturated fatty acids like docosahexaenoic acid were proven to preserve muscle mass. However, it is not known if the most common unsaturated oleate will protect skeletal myotubes against palmitate-mediated atrophy, and its specific mechanism remains to be elucidated. Therefore, we investigated the effects of oleate on atrophy-related factors in palmitate-conditioned myotubes. Exposure of myotubes to palmitate, but not to oleate, led to an induction of fragmented nuclei, myotube loss, atrophy, and mitochondrial superoxide in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment of oleate to myotubes attenuated production of palmitate-induced mitochondrial superoxide in a dose-dependent manner. The treatment of oleate or MitoTEMPO to palmitate-conditioned myotubes led to inhibition of palmitate-induced mRNA expression of proinflammatory (TNF-α and IL6), mitochondrial fission (Drp1 and Fis1), and atrophy markers (myostatin and atrogin1). In accordance with the gene expression data, our immunocytochemistry experiment demonstrated that oleate and MitoTEMPO prevented or attenuated palmitate-mediated myotube shrinkage. These results provide a mechanism indicating that oleate prevents palmitate-mediated atrophy via at least partial modulation of mitochondrial superoxide production
A new palladium alloy with near-ideal hydrogen storage performance
Hydrogen-based fuels demand high-density storage that can operate under
ambient temperatures. Pd and its alloys are the most investigated metal
hydrides for hydrogen fuel cell applications. This study presented an
alternative Pd alloy for hydrogen storage that can store and release hydrogen
at room temperature. The surface of the most studied Pd (110) was modified with
Au and Rh so that the hydrogen adsorption energy was 0.49 eV and the release
temperature was 365 K. Both values are quite near to the optimum values for the
adsorption energy and release temperature of a hydrogen fuel cell in real-world
usage
