    Top Jets at the LHC

We study the reconstruction of high p_T hadronically-decaying top quarks at the LHC. The main challenge in identifying energetic top quarks is that the decay products become increasingly collimated. This reduces the efficacy of conventional methods that exploit the topology of the top decay chain. We focus on the cases where the decay products of the top quark are reconstructed as a single jet, a "top-jet". The most basic "top-tag" method based on jet mass measurement is considered in detail. To analyze the top-tagging method, theoretical and experimental aspects of the QCD jet background are examined. Based on QCD factorization, we derive a simple analytic approximation for the shape of the QCD jet mass spectrum. We observe a good agreement with the Monte Carlo simulation. We consider high-p_T t\bar{t} production in the Standard Model as an example, and show that our theoretical QCD jet mass distributions can efficiently characterize the background via sideband analyses. We show that with 25 fb^{-1} of data, our approach allows us to resolve top-jets with p_T ≥\ge 1 TeV from the QCD background, and about 1.5 TeV top-jets with 100 fb^{-1}, without relying on b-tagging. To further improve the significance we consider jet shapes (analyzed in 0807.0234 [hep-ph]), which resolve the substructure of energy flow inside cone jets. A method of measuring top quark polarization by using the b-quark p_T is also presented. The main advantages of our approach are: (i) the mass distributions are driven by first principle calculations, instead of relying solely on Monte Carlo simulation; (ii) for high p_T jets (p_T ≥\ge1 TeV), IR-safe jet shape variables are robust against detector resolution effects. Our analysis is applicable to other boosted massive particles such as the electroweak gauge bosons and the Higgs.Comment: 46 pages, 23 figure

    Snake bite mimicking brain death

A 6 year old girl woke up with pain and increasing swelling over the left hand and difficulty in breathing. On examination, she had swelling of the left forearm and hand, flaccid quadriparesis and was in respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Two clean puncture wounds were identified on the left thumb. A provisional diagnosis of snake bite with severe envenomation was made and she was given anti snake venom therapy. Over a period of about 4 hours her weakness progressed. She became areflexic, developed internal and external ophthalmoplegia and loss of other brain stem reflexes mimicking brain death. Mechanical ventilation was continued despite features suggestive of brain stem dysfunction. About 36 hours after ventilation she showed a flicker of movement of her fingers and gradually the power improved. She was weaned off the ventilator and extubated after 5 days. External ophthalmoplegia is an established association with cobra envenomation, but, this combination of internal and external ophthalmoplegia can mimic brain death and pose a dilemma to the caregivers regarding continuation of therapy

Religion and responsibility-taking among offenders in Colombia and South Africa : a qualitative assessment of a faith-based program in prison

This paper examines whether religion contributes to offenders taking responsibility for crimes. Specifically, we assessed whether participation in The Prisoner’s Journey (TPJ), a bible study program, increased or decreased responsibility-taking. We also examined whether religious offenders that did not participate in TPJ were likely to take responsibility for their offenses. For this study, we conducted a quasi-experiment in two Colombian and five South African prisons from 2018 to 2019, collecting data from personal interviews with a total of 73 inmates—42 TPJ participants and 31 non-participants—before and after the program. Offenders frequently offered subtle accounts of responsibility that incorporated their own agency with other factors. Highly religious offenders were equally likely to take responsibility, and in some cases participation in TPJ heightened responsibility. In sum, this paper presents evidence that religious beliefs and practice are commensurate with responsibility-taking and desistance from crime.https://journals.sagepub.com/home/ijohj2023Social Work and Criminolog

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome–associated Coronavirus Infection

Whether severe acute respiratory syndrome–associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) infection can be asymptomatic is unclear. We examined the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV among 674 healthcare workers from a hospital in which a SARS outbreak had occurred. A total of 353 (52%) experienced mild self-limiting illnesses, and 321 (48%) were asymptomatic throughout the course of these observations. None of these healthcare workers had antibody to SARS CoV, indicating that subclinical or mild infection attributable to SARS CoV in adults is rare
