    Insolvency in the Corporate Sector and Financial Crisis in Korea

    The paper shows that between the late 1980s and 1997, the year when Korea was engulfed in a financial crisis, its corporate-sector profitability was on a decreasing trend, albeit short-term ups and downs. The evidence presented in the paper suggests that Korea’s corporate and financial sectors had been highly vulnerable to a crisis for some years before 1997 and the actual timing of the crisis was triggered by the financial crisis in Thailand in July 1997 and its contagion effect.Asian crisis; Korean economy; corporate sector insolvency.

    Low-velocity anisotropic Dirac fermions on the side surface of topological insulators

    We report anisotropic Dirac-cone surface bands on a side-surface geometry of the topological insulator Bi2_2Se3_3 revealed by first-principles density-functional calculations. We find that the electron velocity in the side-surface Dirac cone is anisotropically reduced from that in the (111)-surface Dirac cone, and the velocity is not in parallel with the wave vector {\bf k} except for {\bf k} in high-symmetry directions. The size of the electron spin depends on the direction of {\bf k} due to anisotropic variation of the noncollinearity of the electron state. Low-energy effective Hamiltonian is proposed for side-surface Dirac fermions, and its implications are presented including refractive transport phenomena occurring at the edges of tological insulators where different surfaces meet.Comment: 4 pages, 2 columns, 4 figure

    The recent preprint by Mazin et al. [cond-mat/0212417] contains many inappropriate evaluations and/or criticisms on our published work [Phys. Rev. B 66, 020513 (2002) and Nature 418, 758 (2002)]. The preprint [cond-mat/0212417v1] was submitted to Physical Review B as a comment on one of our papers [Phys. Rev. B 66, 020513 (2002)]. In the reviewing process, Mazin et al. have withdrawn many of the statements contained in cond-mat/0212417v1, however two claims remain in their revised manuscript [cond-mat/0212417v3]: (1) the calculated variations of the superconducting energy gap within the sigma- or the pi-bands are not observable in real samples due to scatterings, and (2) the Coulomb repulsion mu(k,k') is negligibly small between sigma- and pi-states and thus should be approximated by a diagonal 2 x 2 matrix in the sigma and pi channels. Here, we point out that the former does not affect the validity of our theoretical work which is for the clean limit, and that the latter is not correct

    Quantum linear amplifier enhanced by photon subtraction and addition

    A deterministic quantum amplifier inevitably adds noise to an amplified signal due to the uncertainty principle in quantum physics. We here investigate how a quantum-noise-limited amplifier can be improved by additionally employing the photon subtraction, the photon addition, and a coherent superposition of the two, thereby making a probabilistic, heralded, quantum amplifier. We show that these operations can enhance the performance in amplifying a coherent state in terms of intensity gain, fidelity, and phase uncertainty. In particular, the photon subtraction turns out to be optimal for the fidelity and the phase concentration among these elementary operations, while the photon addition also provides a significant reduction in the phase uncertainty with the largest gain effect.Comment: published version, 7 pages, 9 figure

    Global Stability of FAST TCP in Single-Link Single-Source Network

    We consider a single-link single-source network with FAST TCP source, and propose a static approximation of queuing delay dynamics at the link. The static approximation turns out to be a form with network feedback delay, which enables to analyze FAST TCP reflecting the effect of network feedback delay. Based on a continuous-time dynamic model of FAST TCP, we achieve the boundedness of window size and a sufficient condition for global asymptotic stability. The simulation results illustrate the validity of the sufficient condition for global asymptotic stability

    [Fe II] and H2 filaments in the Supernova Remnant G11.2-0.3: Supernova Ejecta and Presupernova Circumstellar Wind

    We present the results of near-infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the young, core-collapse supernova remnant (SNR) G11.2-0.3. In the [Fe II] 1.644 um image, we first discover long, clumpy [Fe II] filaments within the radio shell of the SNR, together with some faint, knotty features in the interior of the remnant. We have detected several [Fe II] lines and HI Br-G line toward the peak position of the bright southeastern [Fe II] filament. The derived extinction is large (Av=13 mag) and it is the brightest [Fe II] filament detected toward SNRs to date. By analyzing two [Fe II] 1.644 um images obtained in 2.2 yrs apart, we detect a proper motion corresponding to an expansion rate of 0.''035 (0.''013) /yr [or 830 (310) km/s]. We also discover two small H2 filaments. One is bright and along the SE boundary of the radio shell, while the other is faint and just outside of its NE boundary. We have detected H2 (2-1) S(3) line toward the former filament and derive an excitation temperature of 2,100 K. We suggest that the H2 filaments are dense clumps in a presupernova circumstellar wind swept up by the SNR shock while the [Fe II] filaments are probably composed of both shocked wind material and shocked supernova (SN) ejecta. The distribution of [Fe II] filaments may indicate that the SN explosion in G11.2-0.3 was asymmetric as in Cassiopeia A. Our results support the suggestion that G11.2-0.3 is a remnant of a SN IIL/b interacting with a dense red supergiant wind.Comment: 30 pages with 10 figures, To appear in the Astrophysical Journa

    Gene hunting of the Genetic Analysis Workshop 16 rheumatoid arthritis data using rough set theory

    We propose to use the rough set theory to identify genes affecting rheumatoid arthritis risk from the data collected by the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium. For each gene, we employ generalized dynamic reducts in the rough set theory to select a subset of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to represent the genetic information from this gene. We then group the study subjects into different clusters based on their genotype similarity at the selected markers. Statistical association between disease status and cluster membership is then studied to identify genes associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Based on our proposed approach, we are able to identify a number of statistically significant genes associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Aside from genes on chromosome 6, our identified genes include known disease-associated genes such as PTPN22 and TRAF1. In addition, our list contains other biologically plausible genes, such as ADAM15 and AGPAT2. Our findings suggest that ADAM15 and AGPAT2 may contribute to a genetic predisposition through abnormal angiogenesis and adipose tissue

    Glutaminase 1 inhibition reduces thymidine synthesis in NSCLC

    AbstractWe found that non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is remarkably sensitive to the regulation of glutamine supply by testing the metabolic dependency of 11 cancer cell lines against regulation of glycolysis, autophagy, fatty acid synthesis, and glutamine supply. Glutamine is known as a key supplement of cancer cell growth that is converted to α-ketoglutarate for anabolic biogenesis via glutamate by glutaminase 1 (GLS1). GLS1 inhibition using 10 ΌM of bis-2-(5-phenylacetamido-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)ethyl sulfide (BPTES) showed about 50% cell growth arrest by SRB assay. By testing the synergistic effects of conventional therapeutics, BPTES combined with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), an irreversible inhibitor of thymidylate synthase, significant effects were observed on cell growth arrest in NSCLC. We found that GLS1 inhibition using BPTES reduced metabolic intermediates including thymidine and carbamoyl phosphate. Reduction of thymidine and carbamoyl-phosphate synthesis by BPTES treatment exacerbated pyrimidine supply by combination with 5-FU, which induced cell death synergistically in NSCLC
