Performance of Caching-Based D2D Video Distribution with Measured Popularity Distributions
On-demand video accounts for the majority of wireless data traffic. Video
distribution schemes based on caching combined with device-to-device (D2D)
communications promise order-of-magnitude greater spectral efficiency for video
delivery, but hinge on the principle of `concentrated demand distributions.'
This paper presents, for the first time, the analysis and evaluations of the
throughput--outage tradeoff of such schemes based on measured cellular demand
distributions. In particular, we use a dataset with more than 100 million
requests from the BBC iPlayer, a popular video streaming service in the U.K.,
as the foundation of the analysis and evaluations. We present an achievable
scaling law based on the practical popularity distribution, and show that such
scaling law is identical to those reported in the literature. We find that also
for the numerical evaluations based on a realistic setup, order-of-magnitude
improvements can be achieved. Our results indicate that the benefits promised
by the caching-based D2D in the literature could be retained for cellular
networks in practice.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Globecom 201
Trends and Associated Factors of Use of Opioid, Heroin, and Cannabis Among Patients for Emergency Department Visits in Nevada: 2009–2017
To examine trends and contributing factors of opioid, heroin, and cannabis-associated emergency department (ED) visits in Nevada. The 2009 to 2017 Nevada State ED database (n = 7,950,554 ED visits) were used. Use of opioid, heroin, and cannabis, respectively, was identified by the International Classification of Diseases, 9th & 10th Revisions. Three multivariable models, one for each of the 3 dependent variables, were conducted. Independent variables included year, insurance status, race/ethnicity, use of other substance, and mental health conditions. The number of individuals with opioid, heroin, cannabis-associated ED visits increased 3%, 10%, and 23% annually from 2009 to 2015, particularly among 21 to 29 age group, females, and African Americans. Use of other substance (odds ratio [OR] = 3.91; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.84, 3.99; reference - no use of other substance), mental health conditions (OR = 2.48; 95% CI = 2.43, 2.53; reference – without mental health conditions), Medicaid (OR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.38, 1.44; reference – non-Medicaid), Medicare (OR = 1.44; 95% CI = 1.39, 1.49; reference – non-Medicare) and uninsured patients (OR = 1.52; 95% CI = 1.49, 1.56; reference - insured) were predictors of all three substance-associated ED visits. With a steady increase in trends of opioid, heroin, and cannabis-associated ED visits in recent years, the main contributing factors include patient sociodemographic factors, mental health conditions, and use of other substances
Production of CMAH Knockout Preimplantation Embryos Derived From Immortalized Porcine Cells Via TALE Nucleases
Although noncancerous immortalized cell lines have been developed by introducing genes into human and murine somatic cells, such cell lines have not been available in large domesticated animals like pigs. For immortalizing porcine cells, primary porcine fetal fibroblasts were isolated and cultured using the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene. After selecting cells with neomycin for 2 weeks, outgrowing colonized cells were picked up and subcultured for expansion. Immortalized cells were cultured for more than 9 months without changing their doubling time (similar to 24 hours) or their diameter (< 20 mu m) while control cells became replicatively senescent during the same period. Even a single cell expanded to confluence in 100 mm dishes. Furthermore, to knockout the CMAH gene, designed plasmids encoding a transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALENs) pairs were transfected into the immortalized cells. Each single colony was analyzed by the mutation-sensitive T7 endonuclease I assay, fluorescent PCR, and dideoxy sequencing to obtain three independent clonal populations of cells that contained biallelic modifications. One CMAH knockout clone was chosen and used for somatic cell nuclear transfer. Cloned embryos developed to the blastocyst stage. In conclusion, we demonstrated that immortalized porcine fibroblasts were successfully established using the human hTERT gene, and the TALENs enabled biallelic gene disruptions in these immortalized cells.
Regulation of the Catabolic Cascade in Osteoarthritis by the Zinc-ZIP8-MTF1 Axis
SummaryOsteoarthritis (OA), primarily characterized by cartilage degeneration, is caused by an imbalance between anabolic and catabolic factors. Here, we investigated the role of zinc (Zn2+) homeostasis, Zn2+ transporters, and Zn2+-dependent transcription factors in OA pathogenesis. Among Zn2+ transporters, the Zn2+ importer ZIP8 was specifically upregulated in OA cartilage of humans and mice, resulting in increased levels of intracellular Zn2+ in chondrocytes. ZIP8-mediated Zn2+ influx upregulated the expression of matrix-degrading enzymes (MMP3, MMP9, MMP12, MMP13, and ADAMTS5) in chondrocytes. Ectopic expression of ZIP8 in mouse cartilage tissue caused OA cartilage destruction, whereas Zip8 knockout suppressed surgically induced OA pathogenesis, with concomitant modulation of Zn2+ influx and matrix-degrading enzymes. Furthermore, MTF1 was identified as an essential transcription factor in mediating Zn2+/ZIP8-induced catabolic factor expression, and genetic modulation of Mtf1 in mice altered OA pathogenesis. We propose that the zinc-ZIP8-MTF1 axis is an essential catabolic regulator of OA pathogenesis
Observation of interlayer phonon modes in van der Waals heterostructures
We have investigated the vibrational properties of van der Waals
heterostructures of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs),
specifically MoS2/WSe2 and MoSe2/MoS2 heterobilayers as well as twisted MoS2
bilayers, by means of ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy. We discovered
Raman features (at 30 ~ 40 cm-1) that arise from the layer-breathing mode (LBM)
vibrations between the two incommensurate TMD monolayers in these structures.
The LBM Raman intensity correlates strongly with the suppression of
photoluminescence that arises from interlayer charge transfer. The LBM is
generated only in bilayer areas with direct layer-layer contact and atomically
clean interface. Its frequency also evolves systematically with the relative
orientation between of the two layers. Our research demonstrates that LBM can
serve as a sensitive probe to the interface environment and interlayer
interactions in van der Waals materials
