    An evaluation of culture-specific risk factors and emotion regulation strategies on psychological distress and maladaptive behaviors among Asian Americans

    Cultural context is fundamental in cross-cultural conceptualizations of risk factors for mental health status among ethnic minorities. Existing studies indicate that acculturation level predicts psychological adjustment, but findings remain inconclusive. This study, consisting of university students of Asian descent, evaluated the relationship between acculturation level and internalizing/externalizing problems via the incorporation of more proximal measures of risk factors associated with acculturation (e.g., acculturative dissonance and acculturative stress). In addition, the predictive values of non-culture specific risk factors, such as emotion dysregulation and experiential avoidance, were examined. Acculturation-related stressors and difficulties with emotion regulation increased risk for maladjustment within the study’s sample. Furthermore,experiential avoidance and emotion dysregulation mediated and moderated the relationship between acculturative stress and psychological distress, respectively. The findings suggest that acculturation influences psychological adjustment through a number of factors, including acculturation-related stressors as well as emotion regulation difficulties

    Progressive evolution of tunneling characteristics of in-situ fabricated intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} single crystals

    Stacks of a few intrinsic tunnel junctions were micro-fabricated on the surface of Bi-2212 single crystals. The number of junctions in a stack was tailored by progressively increasing the height of the stack by ion-beam etching, while its tunneling characteristics were measured in-situ in a vacuum chamber for temperatures down to ~13 K. Using this in-situ etching/measurements technique in a single piece of crystal, we systematically excluded any spurious effects arising from variations in the junction parameters and made clear analysis on the following properties of the surface and inner conducting planes. First, the tunneling resistance and the current-voltage curves are scaled by the surface junction resistance. Second, we confirm that the reduction in both the gap and the superconducting transition temperature of the surface conducting plane in contact with a normal metal is not caused by the variation in the doping level, but is caused by the proximity contact. Finally, the main feature of a junction is not affected by the presence of other junctions in a stack in a low bias region.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Comparing Sample-wise Learnability Across Deep Neural Network Models

    Estimating the relative importance of each sample in a training set has important practical and theoretical value, such as in importance sampling or curriculum learning. This kind of focus on individual samples invokes the concept of sample-wise learnability: How easy is it to correctly learn each sample (cf. PAC learnability)? In this paper, we approach the sample-wise learnability problem within a deep learning context. We propose a measure of the learnability of a sample with a given deep neural network (DNN) model. The basic idea is to train the given model on the training set, and for each sample, aggregate the hits and misses over the entire training epochs. Our experiments show that the sample-wise learnability measure collected this way is highly linearly correlated across different DNN models (ResNet-20, VGG-16, and MobileNet), suggesting that such a measure can provide deep general insights on the data's properties.     Strategy scenario selection in the competition of mobile ecosystems

    Competition in the mobile market is centered on platforms, or operating systems, for smartphones. The current competition and market structure of the global mobile market has shifted to a competition among ecosystems that utilize the same mobile operating systems of the platform operators. This paper aims to answer those questions. The direction of competition in the smartphone industry is traced. This study tries to list the selectable strategy options for each major ecosystem. Then the strategy options for each ecosystem are tested in terms of their desirability from the viewpoint of industry experts. Finally, this study tries to put the puzzle together based on the most desirable strategy options for each ecosystem
