    On the Profiles and Polarization of Raman Scattered Emission Lines in Symbiotic Stars:II. Numerical Simulations

    A Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the profiles and the polarization of the Raman scattered O VI lines(lambda lambda 6827,7088) in symbiotic stars. A point-like isotropic UV radiation source is assumed and a simple spherical wind model is adopted for the kinematics of the scattering material from the cool giant. We first investigate the case where the incident line photons are described by a Gaussian profile having a width of 10^4 K. We subsequently investigate the effects of the extended ionized region and non-spherical wind models including a disk-type wind and a bipolar wind. The cases where the emissin source is described by non-Gaussian profiles are briefly studied. Finally, as an additional component for the kinematics of symbiotic stars the orbital motion of the hot component around the cool giant is included and the effect on the spectropolarimetry is investigated. In this case the polarization direction changes around the red part of the Raman-scattered emission lines, when the observer's line of sight is perpendicular to the orbital plane, and no such effect is seen when the line of sight lies in the orbital plane. Furthermore, complex peak structures are seen in the degree of polarization and polarized flux, which have often been observed in several symbiotic systems including RR Tel. Brief observational consequences and preditions are discussed in relation to the present and future spectropolarimetry for symbiotic stars. It is concluded that spectropolarimetry may provide a powerful diagnostic of the physical conditions of symbiotic stars.Comment: 22 pages, Tex, 15 postscript figuer

    The title compound, C26H18N4O5, can be regarded as an extended ether with two terminal nitro groups. The two aryl rings bonded to the central O atom form a dihedral angle of 75.72 (6)°, and the terminal nitro groups are slightly twisted [by 6.4 (2) and 3.3 (3)°] from the benzene rings to which they are attached. The crystal packing exhibits weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π–π inter­actions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.794 (3) Å]

    Effects of Forestland Ownership Conversion on Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The Case of South Korea

    This research analyzed the effects of forestland conversion from private to public ownership on greenhouse gas emissions by quantifying the relationship between forestland ownership conversion and deforestation, and then examining the effects of the change in deforestation on greenhouse gas emissions in South Korea. Ex ante simulations forecast greenhouse gas emissions resulting from deforestation rates under the current level of national forestland and three scenarios of increased percentages of national forestland.     Human Neural Stem Cells Genetically Modified to Overexpress Akt1 Provide Neuroprotection and Functional Improvement in Mouse Stroke Model

    In a previous study, we have shown that human neural stem cells (hNSCs) transplanted in brain of mouse intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) stroke model selectively migrate to the ICH lesion and induce behavioral recovery. However, low survival rate of grafted hNSCs in the brain precludes long-term therapeutic effect. We hypothesized that hNSCs overexpressing Akt1 transplanted into the lesion site could provide long-term improved survival of hNSCs, and behavioral recovery in mouse ICH model. F3 hNSC was genetically modified with a mouse Akt1 gene using a retroviral vector. F3 hNSCs expressing Akt1 were found to be highly resistant to H2O2-induced cytotoxicity in vitro. Following transplantation in ICH mouse brain, F3.Akt1 hNSCs induced behavioral improvement and significantly increased cell survival (50–100% increase) at 2 and 8 weeks post-transplantation as compared to parental F3 hNSCs. Brain transplantation of hNSCs overexpressing Akt1 in ICH animals provided functional recovery, and survival and differentiation of grafted hNSCs. These results indicate that the F3.Akt1 human NSCs should be a great value as a cellular source for the cellular therapy in animal models of human neurological disorders including ICH

    The Impacts of Social Support and Loneliness on the Physical Health and Coping Styles of College Students during COVID-19

    Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increased mental health risk among college students. Recent studies have suggested that this concerning phenomenon can be attributed to social isolation and loneliness caused by preventive measures including social distancing. Being socially isolated can also have harmful effects on one’s physical health, such as a weakened cardiovascular system. Furthermore, existing literature reported that social support can promote more active coping strategies, which is associated with better psychological adjustment. Nevertheless, there hasn’t been any research on the influence of social factors and loneliness both on students’ health and their coping styles during the pandemic. The purpose of the present study is to investigate how loneliness and perceived social support are associated with the physical health and coping styles of college students during COVID-19. As for the coping measure, the study will look specifically at two types of coping strategies: active coping and self-distraction. The variables were measured through an online survey administered across five different time points in 2020 with students enrolled in Chapman University. The study will focus on the first two waves of the survey, which took place in May and July of 2020. Social support and loneliness in May will be used to predict physical health and coping styles in July. It is hypothesized that students who reported higher levels of perceived social support would show better physical health and use active coping more than self-distraction. It is also predicted that those who feel higher levels of loneliness would report poorer physical health and engage more in self-distraction than in active coping. This study may contribute to the necessary endeavor to improve the physical and psychological wellbeing of college students during the global health crisis by promoting higher social support and alleviating the sense of loneliness

    Bilateral herpetic keratitis presenting with unilateral neurotrophic keratitis in pemphigus foliaceus: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>We report a case of bilateral herpetic keratitis developing after rapid oral corticosteroid tapering in a patient with pemphigus foliaceus, which was followed by unilateral neurotrophic keratitis that was treated with amniotic membrane transplantation.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 71-year-old Korean man developed bilateral herpetic keratitis one week after rapid tapering of systemic corticosteroid. He had been on high-dose oral corticosteroid and azathioprine therapy for six months for treatment of pemphigus foliaceus. Topical acyclovir ointment was prescribed. A week later, our patient's right eye had healed, but his left eye showed increased stromal edema with enlarged epithelial defects. He was prescribed oral acyclovir with topical broad-spectrum antibiotics applied to his left eye. The stromal edema cleared within a week but the epithelial defect remained unchanged. An amniotic membrane transplantation was performed on our patient's left eye, and his epithelial defect had totally healed three weeks later.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Patients with autoimmune disease or who are on immunosuppressive therapy have a higher chance of developing bilateral herpetic keratitis. Although rare, the condition may be followed by unilateral neurotrophic keratitis. Rapid corticosteroid tapering may act as a triggering factor for viral infection or reactivation of herpes.</p

    Toward the Evidence of the Accretion Disk Emission in the Symbiotic Star RR Tel

    In this paper, we argue that in the symbiotic star RR Tel the existence of an accretion disk around the hot companion is strongly implied by the characteristic features exhibited by the Raman-scattered O VI lines around 6830 \AA and 7088 \AA. High degrees of polarization and double-peaked profiles in the Raman-scattered lines and single-peak profiles for other emission lines are interpreted as line-of-sight effects, where the H I scatterers near the giant see an incident double-peaked profile and an observer with a low inclination sees single-peak profiles. It is predicted that different mass concentrations around the accretion disk formed by a dusty wind may lead to the disparate ratios of the blue peak strength to the red counterpart observed in the 6830 and 7088 features. We discuss the evolutionary links between symbiotic stars and bipolar protoplanetary nebulae and conclude that the Raman scattering processes may play an important role in investigation of the physical properties of these objects.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ Letter

    Vertical beaming of wavelength-scale photonic crystal resonators

    We report that >80> 80% of the photons generated inside a photonic crystal slab resonator can be funneled within a small divergence angle of ±30\pm 30^\circ. The far-field radiation properties of a photonic crystal slab resonant mode are modified by tuning the cavity geometry and by placing a reflector below the cavity. The former method directly shapes the near-field distribution so as to achieve directional and linearly-polarized far-field patterns. The latter modification takes advantage of the interference effect between the original waves and the reflected waves to enhance the energy-directionality. We find that, regardless of the slab thickness, the optimum distance between the slab and the reflector closely equals one wavelength of the resonance under consideration. We have also discussed an efficient far-field simulation algorithm based on the finite-difference time-domain method and the near- to far-field transformation.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Phys.
