Interspecific competition underlying mutualistic networks
The architecture of bipartite networks linking two classes of constituents is
affected by the interactions within each class. For the bipartite networks
representing the mutualistic relationship between pollinating animals and
plants, it has been known that their degree distributions are broad but often
deviate from power-law form, more significantly for plants than animals. Here
we consider a model for the evolution of the mutualistic networks and find that
their topology is strongly dependent on the asymmetry and non-linearity of the
preferential selection of mutualistic partners. Real-world mutualistic networks
analyzed in the framework of the model show that a new animal species
determines its partners not only by their attractiveness but also as a result
of the competition with pre-existing animals, which leads to the
stretched-exponential degree distributions of plant species.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted version in PR
Toll-like Receptors and Antimicrobial Peptides Expressions of Psoriasis: Correlation with Serum Vitamin D Level
To evaluate the association of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and vitamin D receptors (VDRs) in psoriasis, lesional (PP) and perilesional skin (PN) from psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (AD) patients and healthy controls (NN) were studied by immunohistochemistry. Compared with PN, AD and NN skin, dysregulated expression of TLRs, AMPs and VDR was detected in PP skin. Noteworthy, our results showed altered correlation between TLR2 and VDR expression in PP and PN skin. Human beta defensin 2 (HBD2) and cathelicidin (LL-37) expressions in the PP skin were higher in serum vitamin D sufficient (VDS) groups than serum vitamin D deficient (VDD) groups. Negative correlation was found between TLR2 and VDR expression in the PP skin of VDD groups. However, positive correlation was noted in the PP skin of VDS groups. Based on the present results, therapies targeting the activity of TLRs, AMPs and vitamin D, including modulation of the TLR-VDR pathways, might provide new therapeutic approaches to the psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases
Dietary intakes of women during pregnancy in low- and middle-income countries
Abstract Objective To provide a better understanding of dietary intakes of pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries. Design Systematic review was performed to identify relevant studies which reported nutrient intakes or food consumption of pregnant women in developing countries. Macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were compared by region and the FAO/WHO Estimated Average Requirements. Food consumption was summarized by region. Setting Developing countries in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean and Central/South America. Subjects Pregnant women in the second or third trimester of their pregnancies. Results From a total of 1499 retrieved articles, sixty-two relevant studies were analysed. The ranges of mean/median intakes of energy, fat, protein and carbohydrate were relatively higher in women residing in the Caribbean and Central/South America than in Africa and Asia. Percentages of energy from carbohydrate and fat varied inversely across studies in all regions, whereas percentage of energy from protein was relatively stable. Among selected micronutrients, folate and Fe intakes were most frequently below the Estimated Average Requirements, followed by Ca and Zn. Usual dietary patterns were heavily cereal based across regions. Conclusions Imbalanced macronutrients, inadequate micronutrient intakes and predominantly plant-based diets were common features of the diet of pregnant women in developing countries. Cohesive public health efforts involving improving access to nutrient-rich local foods, micronutrient supplementation and fortification are needed to improve the nutrition of pregnant women in developing countrie
Effects of Increasing Concentrations of Corn Distiller’s Dried Grains with Solubles on Chemical Composition and Nutrients Content of Egg
Four diets were formulated to contain 0, 17, 35 or 50% corn DDGS. A total of 240 54-week-old single-comb White Leghorn laying hens were assigned to one of four dietary treatments and fed for a 24-week experimental period. Two sets of the experimental diets were formulated and each diet was fed for 12 weeks. Chemical composition and nutritional components in egg yolk were measured. Egg yolk from hens fed DDGS-containing diet tended to have higher fat content and lower protein content. Total polyunsaturated fatty acids were significantly increased by DDGS diet. The contents of choline and cholesterol were initially higher in 50% DDGS treatment group, but were not different in the later period, especially during last 4 weeks. Lutein content increased linearly as DDGS level increased. The results indicated that feeding high level of DDGS can increase the content of lutein and polyunsaturated fatty acids in egg yolk, but may not affect the content of cholesterol or choline

Enhanced Generative Adversarial Networks for Unseen Word Generation from EEG Signals
Recent advances in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, particularly
based on generative adversarial networks (GAN), have shown great promise for
improving decoding performance for BCI. Within the realm of Brain-Computer
Interfaces (BCI), GANs find application in addressing many areas. They serve as
a valuable tool for data augmentation, which can solve the challenge of limited
data availability, and synthesis, effectively expanding the dataset and
creating novel data formats, thus enhancing the robustness and adaptability of
BCI systems. Research in speech-related paradigms has significantly expanded,
with a critical impact on the advancement of assistive technologies and
communication support for individuals with speech impairments. In this study,
GANs were investigated, particularly for the BCI field, and applied to generate
text from EEG signals. The GANs could generalize all subjects and decode unseen
words, indicating its ability to capture underlying speech patterns consistent
across different individuals. The method has practical applications in neural
signal-based speech recognition systems and communication aids for individuals
