A complete checklist with new records and geographical distribution of the rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) of Brazil
This paper presents the first comprehensive list of 2,688 species of Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) recorded from Brazil. The list is based on the taxonomic and ecological literature, and new records from some insect collections, and includes locality references for each species. In addition, Brazilian localities and the country-level distribution outside of Brazil are provided for each species. Brazilian localities are organized by state, and include the bibliographic reference and page number where each locality was reported. All localities are geo-referenced, organized by state, and listed in an Appendix.Este trabalho apresenta a primeira lista completa das 2.688 espécies de Staphylinidae (Coleoptera) registradas para o Brasil. A lista inclui todas as localidades citadas para cada espécie e baseia-se na literatura taxonômica e ecológica disponÃveis. Cada localidade inclui a referência bibliográfica e o número da página onde foram citadas. Também são apresentados registros inéditos obtidos de algumas coleções de insetos. Além das localidades brasileiras são citados todos os paÃses com ocorrência conhecida para cada espécie. Targeting protein–protein interactions within the cyclic AMP signaling system as a therapeutic strategy for cardiovascular disease
The cAMP signaling system can trigger precise physiological cellular responses that depend on the fidelity of many protein–protein interactions, which act to bring together signaling intermediates at defined locations within cells. In the heart, cAMP participates in the fine control of excitation–contraction coupling, hence, any disregulation of this signaling cascade can lead to cardiac disease. Due to the ubiquitous nature of the cAMP pathway, general inhibitors of cAMP signaling proteins such as PKA, EPAC and PDEs would act non-specifically and universally, increasing the likelihood of serious ‘off target’ effects. Recent advances in the discovery of peptides and small molecules that disrupt the protein–protein interactions that underpin cellular targeting of cAMP signaling proteins are described and discussed

Dissociation of Cerebral Blood Flow and Femoral Artery Blood Pressure Pulsatility After Cardiac Arrest and Resuscitation in a Rodent Model: Implications for Neurological Recovery.
Background Impaired neurological function affects 85% to 90% of cardiac arrest (CA) survivors. Pulsatile blood flow may play an important role in neurological recovery after CA. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) pulsatility immediately, during, and after CA and resuscitation has not been investigated. We characterized the effects of asphyxial CA on short-term (<2 hours after CA) CBF and femoral arterial blood pressure (ABP) pulsatility and studied their relationship to cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) and short-term neuroelectrical recovery. Methods and Results Male rats underwent asphyxial CA followed by cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A multimodal platform combining laser speckle imaging, ABP, and electroencephalography to monitor CBF, peripheral blood pressure, and brain electrophysiology, respectively, was used. CBF and ABP pulsatility and CVR were assessed during baseline, CA, and multiple time points after resuscitation. Neuroelectrical recovery, a surrogate for neurological outcome, was assessed using quantitative electroencephalography 90 minutes after resuscitation. We found that CBF pulsatility differs significantly from baseline at all experimental time points with sustained deficits during the 2 hours of postresuscitation monitoring, whereas ABP pulsatility was relatively unaffected. Alterations in CBF pulsatility were inversely correlated with changes in CVR, but ABP pulsatility had no association to CVR. Interestingly, despite small changes in ABP pulsatility, higher ABP pulsatility was associated with worse neuroelectrical recovery, whereas CBF pulsatility had no association. Conclusions Our results reveal, for the first time, that CBF pulsatility and CVR are significantly altered in the short-term postresuscitation period after CA. Nevertheless, higher ABP pulsatility appears to be inversely associated with neuroelectrical recovery, possibly caused by impaired cerebral autoregulation and/or more severe global cerebral ischemia
Theoretical Isochrones with Extinction in the K Band. II. J - K versus K
We calculate theoretical isochrones in a consistent way for five filter pairs
near the J and K band atmospheric windows (J-K, J-K', J-Ks, F110W-F205W, and
F110W-F222M) using the Padova stellar evolutionary models of Girardi et al. We
present magnitude transformations between various K-band filters as a function
of color. Isochrones with extinction of up to 6 mag in the K band are also
presented. As found for the filter pairs composed of H & K band filters, we
find that the reddened isochrones of different filter pairs behave as if they
follow different extinction laws, and that the extinction curves of Hubble
Space Telescope NICMOS filter pairs in the color-magnitude diagram are
considerably nonlinear. Because of these problems, extinction values estimated
with NICMOS filters can be in error by up to 1.3 mag. Our calculation suggests
that the extinction law implied by the observations of Rieke et al for
wavelengths between the J and K bands is better described by a power-law
function with an exponent of 1.66 instead of 1.59, which is commonly used with
an assumption that the transmission functions of J and K filters are Dirac

Treadmill exercise within lower body negative pressure protects leg lean tissue mass and extensor strength and endurance during bed rest.
Leg muscle mass and strength are decreased during reduced activity and non-weight-bearing conditions such as bed rest (BR) and spaceflight. Supine treadmill exercise within lower body negative pressure (LBNPEX) provides full-body weight loading during BR and may prevent muscle deconditioning. We hypothesized that a 40-min interval exercise protocol performed against LBNPEX 6 days week(-1) would attenuate losses in leg lean mass (LLM), strength, and endurance during 6° head-down tilt BR, with similar benefits for men and women. Fifteen pairs of healthy monozygous twins (8 male and 7 female pairs) completed 30 days of BR with one sibling of each twin pair assigned randomly as the non-exercise control (CON) and the other twin as the exercise subject (EX). Before and after BR, LLM and isokinetic leg strength and endurance were measured. Mean knee and ankle extensor and flexor strength and endurance and LLM decreased from pre- to post-BR in the male CON subjects (P < 0.01), but knee extensor strength and endurance, ankle extensor strength, and LLM were maintained in the male EX subjects. In contrast, no pre- to post-BR changes were significant in the female subjects, either CON or EX, likely due to their lower pre-BR values. Importantly, the LBNPEX countermeasure prevents or attenuates declines in LLM as well as extensor leg strength and endurance. Individuals who are stronger, have higher levels of muscular endurance, and/or have greater LLM are likely to experience greater losses during BR than those who are less fit
Metallicity Mapping with gri Photometry: The Virgo Overdensity and the Halos of the Galaxy
We describe the methodology required for estimation of photometric estimates
of metallicity based on the SDSS gri passbands, which can be used to probe the
properties of main-sequence stars beyond ~ 10 kpc, complementing studies of
nearby stars from more metallicity-sensitive color indices that involve the u
passband. As a first application of this approach, we determine photometric
metal abundance estimates for individual main-sequence stars in the Virgo
Overdensity, which covers almost 1000 square degrees on the sky, based on a
calibration of the metallicity sensitivity of stellar isochrones in the gri
filter passbands using field stars with well-determined spectroscopic metal
abundances. Despite the low precision of the method for individual stars,
internal errors of in [Fe/H] ~ +/- 0.1 dex can be achieved for bulk stellar
populations. The global metal abundance of the Virgo Overdensity determined in
this way is = -2.0 +/- 0.1 (internal) +/- 0.5 (systematic), from
photometric measurements of 0.7 million stars with heliocentric distances from
~ 10 kpc to ~ 20 kpc. A preliminary metallicity map, based on results for 2.9
million stars in the northern SDSS DR-7 footprint, exhibits a shift to lower
metallicities as one proceeds from the inner- to the outer-halo population,
consistent with recent interpretation of the kinematics of local samples of
stars with spectroscopically available metallicity estimates and full space

Imaging correlates of molecular signatures in oligodendrogliomas.
Molecular subsets of oligodendroglioma behave in biologically distinct ways. Their locations in the brain, rates of growth, and responses to therapy differ with their genotypes. Retrospectively, we inquired whether allelic loss of chromosomal arms 1p and 19q, an early molecular event and favorable prognostic marker in oligodendrogliomas, were reflected in their appearance on magnetic resonance imaging. Loss of 1p and 19q was associated with an indistinct border on T(1) images and mixed intensity signal on T(1) and T(2). Loss of 1p and 19q was also associated with paramagnetic susceptibility effect and with calcification, a common histopathological finding in oligodendrogliomas. These data encourage prospective evaluation of molecular alterations and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of glial neoplasms
Blocking binding of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Aa to Bombyx mori cadherin receptor results in only a minor reduction of toxicity
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Bacillus thuringiensis </it>Cry1Aa insecticidal protein is the most active known <it>B. thuringiensis </it>toxin against the forest insect pest <it>Lymantria dispar </it>(gypsy moth), unfortunately it is also highly toxic against the non-target insect <it>Bombyx mori </it>(silk worm).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Surface exposed hydrophobic residues over domains II and III were targeted for site-directed mutagenesis. Substitution of a phenylalanine residue (F328) by alanine reduced binding to the <it>Bombyx mori </it>cadherin by 23-fold, reduced biological activity against <it>B. mori </it>by 4-fold, while retaining activity against <it>Lymantria dispar</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results identify a novel receptor-binding epitope and demonstrate that virtual elimination of binding to cadherin BR-175 does not completely remove toxicity in the case of <it>B. mori</it>.</p
