    Single Phase Pump: Non-Mechanical Valvular Conduit

    This thesis evaluates performance of a non-mechanical conduit valve that was designed for the purpose of this research. The motivation came from the need for a cooling system of portable computers (e.g. laptops and netbooks). As the technology of micro-processors in portable computers advances, they will generate more heat, requiring a more effective and efficient way to cool the system. Based on this fact, a new method of heat dissipation using a single-phase liquid (i.e. water) instead of air was examined. This potentially allowed 80 times more heat dissipation, which translates to better and faster computers for the near future. In designing a single-phase-liquid micro-scale cooling system, various pump mechanisms and their functionalities were considered. It was concluded that a diaphragm pump design is the most effective candidate for this cooling system. The essential component when designing a diaphragm pump is a valve; however, the main issues in selecting a valve are its mechanics and required maintenance. Thus, the non-mechanical valvular conduit, which uses no moving mechanism, was studied through a combination of numerical/computational and experimental methods. The non-mechanical valvular conduit is a micro-channel with a complex geometry; hence, this conduit uses the principle of pressure resistance in the channel flow such that the flow is uni-directional. Through the numerical study, the valvular conduit design’s geometric dimensions were optimized. Then numerical simulations of the pumping/oscillating sequence of the valvular conduit were conducted to examine the effectiveness of the valve when placed in use for a diaphragm pump. It was found that the non-mechanical valve was 38 % more effective in the favorable direction than the opposite direction. As for the necessary heat dissipation, this conduit design demonstrates a great potential to dissipate the thermal design power (TDP) of Intel Pentium D processor (i.e. 130 [W]). During the experiments, the non-mechanical valve confirmed the numerical results. The experimental results also demonstrated that the favorable direction flow produced 244 % less pressure resistance than the opposite direction flow. It was concluded that the non-mechanical valvular conduit can be an effective application for diaphragm pumps in macro and micro-scale without any possibility of obstructing a mechanism

    Effects of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) Deficiency in Lake Trout Alevins and Preventive Treatments

    The objectives of this study were to examine the effect of thiamine immersion of fish from a population known for compromised survival as a result of early mortality syndrome (EMS) and to investigate the causeâ response relationship between thiamine concentration and lesions in tissues in swimâ upâ stage lake trout Salvelinus namaycush alevins. Lake trout eggs from 14 fish from Lake Michigan were artificially fertilized and the progeny divided into two groups based on the thiamine concentration (low (0.85 nmol/g)) in the unfertilized eggs. Progeny were treated or not with a thiamine solution (2,000 mg/L for 2 h) at hatching or the swimâ up stage. The survival of progeny in control groups at the swimâ up stage correlated with thiamine concentration. The low thiamineâ treated groups had significantly higher survival between the swimâ up stage (812.0 degreeâ days) and 16 d after swimâ up (963.3 degreeâ days) than the control groups; the survival of the high thiamineâ treated groups did not differ between treated and control fish, regardless of the treatment at hatching and the swimâ up stage. Control alevins that had low thiamine levels showed EMS, which resulted in 94.9â 100% mortality 16 d after the swimâ up stage. No pathological changes were observed in the brain, olfactory lobe, eye, liver, or muscle in alevins of high thiamineâ treated group. Glycogen deposits in the liver of alevins from the low control group were variable, no glycogen being observed in the hepatocytes of 7 of the 24 fish.     Quercetin, the active phenolic component in kiwifruit, prevents hydrogen peroxide-induced inhibition of gap-junction intercellular communication

    We evaluated the effects of the two main kiwifruit cultivars (gold kiwifruit (GOK) and green kiwifruit (GRK)) and their active phenolic compound, quercetin, on H2O2-induced inhibition of gap-junction intercellular communication (GJIC) in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells. We found that both GOK and GRK protect WB-F344 cells from H2O2-induced inhibition of GJIC. The extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2)-connexin 43 (Cx43) signalling pathway is crucial for the regulation of GJIC, and both GOK and GRK blocked the H2O2-induced phosphorylation of Cx43 and ERK1/2 in WB-F344 cells. Quercetin alone attenuated the H2O2-mediated ERK1/2-Cx43 signalling pathway and consequently reversed H2O2-mediated inhibition of GJIC in WB-F344 cells. A free radical-scavenging assay using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl showed that the scavenging activity of quercetin was higher than that of a synthetic antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene, per mol, suggesting that the chemopreventive effect of quercetin on H2O2-mediated inhibition of ERK1/2-Cx43 signalling and GJIC may be mediated through its free radical-scavenging activity. Since the carcinogenicity of reactive oxygen species such as H2O2 is attributable to the inhibition of GJIC, GOK, GRK and quercetin may have chemopreventive potential by preventing the inhibition of GJI

    AbstractTo investigate the anti-cancer properties of soil-borne actinobacteria, MJM 8637, the glutathione S-transferase pi (GST-pi) assay, anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-Îą assay, the level of antioxidant potential by DPPH radical scavenging activity, NO scavenging activity, and ABTS radical scavenging activity in ethyl acetate extract were determined. The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed that Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637, which was isolated from Hambak Mountain, Korea, has 99.5% similarity to Streptomyces atratus strain NBRC 3897. The physiological and the morphological characteristics of the strain MJM 8637 were also identified. The ethyl acetate extract of MJM 8637 inhibited TNF-Îą production approximately 61.8% at concentration 100Îźg/ml. The IC50 value of the strain MJM 8637 extract on GST-pi was identified to be 120.2Âą1.6Îźg/ml. In DPPH, NO, and ABTS radical scavenging assays, the IC50 values of the strain MJM 8637 extract were found to be 977.2Îźg/ml, 1143.7Îźg/ml, and 454.4Îźg/ml, respectively. The ethyl acetate extract of the strain MJM 8637 showed 97.2Âą1.3% of cell viability at 100Îźg/ml in RAW 264.7 cell viability assay. The results obtained from this study suggest that the ethyl acetate extract of Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637 could be considered as a potential source of drug for the cancers that have multidrug resistance with its GST-pi inhibition and anti-inflammation activities, and low cytotoxicity

    2-D ECG Compression Using Optimal Sorting and Mean Normalization

    Abstract. In this paper, we propose an effective compression method for electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. 1-D ECG signals are reconstructed to 2-D ECG data by period and complexity sorting schemes with image compression techniques to increase inter and intra-beat correlation. The proposed method added block division and mean period normalization techniques on top of conventional 2-D data ECG compression methods. JPEG 2000 is chosen for compression of 2-D ECG data. Standard MIT BIH arrhythmia database is used for evaluation and experiment. The results show that the proposed method outperforms compared to the most recent literature especially in case of high compression rate
