5-Carboxylcytosine is localized to euchromatic regions in the nuclei of follicular cells in axolotl ovary
5-Methylcytosine (5-mC) is an epigenetic modification associated with gene repression. Recent studies demonstrated that 5-mC can be enzymatically oxidised into 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and further into 5-formylcytosine (5-fC) and 5-carboxylcytsine (5-caC). 5-caC has been found in embryonic stem cells and in mouse pre-implantation embryos but no detectable levels of this modification have been reported for somatic tissues to date. Whereas it has been suggested that 5-caC can serve as an intermediate in the process of active demethylation, the function of this form of modified cytosine remains obscure. Here we show that 5-caC is immunochemically detectable in somatic cells of axolotl ovary. We demonstrate that both 5-hmC and 5-caC are localized to the euchromatin in the nuclei of axolotl follicular cells with similar patterns of spatial distribution. Our results suggest that 5-carboxylcytosine may play a distinct functional role in certain biological contexts
On the Role of Higher Twist in Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering
The higher twist corrections to the spin dependent proton and
neutron structure functions are extracted in a model
independent way from experimental data on and found to be
non-negligible. It is shown that the NLO QCD polarized parton densities
determined from the data on g1, including higher twist effects, are in good
agreement with those found earlier from our analysis of the data on g1/F1 and
A1 where higher twist effects are negligible. On the contrary, the LO QCD
polarized parton densities obtained from the data on g1, including higher

Rosetta Brains: A Strategy for Molecularly-Annotated Connectomics
We propose a neural connectomics strategy called Fluorescent In-Situ
Sequencing of Barcoded Individual Neuronal Connections (FISSEQ-BOINC),
leveraging fluorescent in situ nucleic acid sequencing in fixed tissue
(FISSEQ). FISSEQ-BOINC exhibits different properties from BOINC, which relies
on bulk nucleic acid sequencing. FISSEQ-BOINC could become a scalable approach
for mapping whole-mammalian-brain connectomes with rich molecular annotations
Nonlocal Effects on the Magnetic Penetration Depth in d-wave Superconductors
We show that, under certain conditions, the low temperature behavior of the
magnetic penetration depth of a pure d-wave superconductor is
determined by nonlocal electrodynamics and, contrary to the general belief, the
deviation is proportional to T^2 and
not T. We predict that the dependence, due to
nonlocality, should be observable experimentally in nominally clean high-T_c
superconductors below a crossover temperature . Possible complications due to impurities, surface quality and

Infrared Behavior of the Gluon Propagator on a Large Volume Lattice
The first calculation of the gluon propagator using an order a^2 improved
action with the corresponding order a^2 improved Landau gauge fixing condition
is presented. The gluon propagator obtained from the improved action and
improved Landau gauge condition is compared with earlier unimproved results on
similar physical lattice volumes of 3.2^3 \times 6.4 fm^4. We find agreement
between the improved propagator calculated on a coarse lattice with lattice
spacing a = 0.35 fm and the unimproved propagator calculated on a fine lattice
with spacing a = 0.10 fm. This motivates us to calculate the gluon propagator
on a coarse large-volume lattice 5.6^3 \times 11.2 fm^4. The infrared behavior
of previous studies is confirmed in this work. The gluon propagator is enhanced
at intermediate momenta and suppressed at infrared momenta. Therefore the
observed infrared suppression of the Landau gauge gluon propagator is not a

Higher moments of nucleon spin structure functions in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and in a resonance model
The third moment of the twist-3 part of the nucleon spin structure
function is generalized to arbitrary momentum transfer and is
evaluated in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) up to order
and in a unitary isobar model (MAID). We show how to link
as well as higher moments of the nucleon spin structure functions
and to nucleon spin polarizabilities. We compare our results with the
most recent experimental data, and find a good description of these available
data within the unitary isobar model. We proceed to extract the twist-4 matrix
element which appears in the suppressed term in the twist
expansion of the spin structure function for proton and neutron.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
Infinite Volume and Continuum Limits of the Landau-Gauge Gluon Propagator
We extend a previous improved action study of the Landau gauge gluon
propagator, by using a variety of lattices with spacings from to
0.41 fm, to more fully explore finite volume and discretization effects. We
also extend a previously used technique for minimizing lattice artifacts, the
appropriate choice of momentum variable or ``kinematic correction'', by
considering it more generally as a ``tree-level correction''. We demonstrate
that by using tree-level correction, determined by the tree-level behavior of
the action being considered, it is possible to obtain scaling behavior over a
very wide range of momenta and lattice spacings. This makes it possible to
explore the infinite volume and continuum limits of the Landau-gauge gluon

Spin-dependent twist-4 matrix elements from the instanton vacuum: Flavor-singlet and nonsinglet
We estimate the twist-4 spin-1 nucleon matrix element f_2 in an
instanton-based description of the QCD vacuum. In addition to the
flavor-nonsinglet we compute also the flavor-singlet matrix element, which
appears in next-to-leading order of the (1/N_c)-expansion. The corresponding
twist-3 spin-2 matrix elements d_2 are suppressed in the packing fraction of
the instanton medium, (\bar \rho)/(\bar R) << 1. We use our results to estimate
the leading (1/Q^2) power corrections to the first moment of the proton and
neutron spin structure functions G_1, as well as the intrinsic charm

Development and piloting of an exposure database and surveillance system for DOE cleanup operations
An industrial hygiene exposure database and surveillance system was developed in partnership between National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-funded independent investigators and practicing industrial hygienists at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS) in Golden, Colo. RFETS is a former U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons plant that is now in cleanup phase. This project is presented as a case study in the development of an exposure database and surveillance system in terms that are generalizable to most other industries and work contexts. Steps include gaining organizational support; defining system purpose and scope; defining database elements and coding; planning practical and efficient analysis strategies; incorporating reporting capabilities; and anticipating communication strategies that maximize the probability that surveillance findings will feed back to preventive applications. For each of these topics, the authors describe both general considerations as well as the specific choices made for this system. An important feature of the system is a two-tier task-coding scheme comprising 33 categories of task groups. Examples of grouped analyses of exposure data captured during the system pilot period demonstrate applications to exposure control, medical surveillance, and other preventive measures.
