    Influence of physical form and energy level of the diet on performance and carcass composition of broilers

    Brazilian broiler production still debates the use of pelleted or mash diets. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary energy level (2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 Mcal EM/kg) and physical form (pellet, without fines; and mash) on performance and carcass composition, of 3 200 male broilers, from 22 to 43 days of age. The fines from the pelleted diet had higher calcium and phosphorus levels than the whole pellets. Intake of pelleted diets was greater (P<.05) for energy levels below 3.1 Mcal EM/kg. The energy levels did not influence weight gain, but grains were greater with pelleted than with mash diets (1.82 vs. 1.69 kg). Higher levels of energy resulted in better feed conversion ratio (P<.01), but there were no differences in caloric conversion ratio (P<.05). Pellet diets resulted in better feed (1.93 vs. 2.04) and caloric (5 791 vs. 6 115 kcal/kg) conversion (P<.01), but greater carcass fatness was also observed (abdominal and gizzard fat) (P<.01) and higher mortality rate (17.8 vs. 8.3 %) (P<.01) for pellet and mash diets, respectively

    Skin, paper, tiles: a cross-cultural history of Kadiwéu art

    This article focuses on the global traffic in images relating to Kadiwéu culture in South America, analyzing the extent to which they are entangled in the group’s continuing sense of presence. It begins with Kadiwéu designs as they appeared in the sketchbook of the artist-explorer Guido Boggiani in the late nineteenth century. It then explores the mapping of Kadiwéu territory and the practices and protocols informing a politics of land rights, cultural property and economic survival, looking in particular at the commissioning of Kadiwéu designs for a housing estate and an associated exhibition in Berlin early in the twentieth-first century. By developing a cross-cultural history of Kadiwéu art that considers the transnational networks across different times and spaces, including the case of a transcultural history of copyright, the article seeks to contribute to the ongoing re-thinking of the colonial archive and its afterlife

    Resultados de Pesquisa em Nutrição de Aves no Brasil: Resumo dos Ultimos 5 anos Results of Poultry Nutrition Research in Brazil: A Summary of the Last 5 years

    Foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as pesquisas brasileiras na área de nutrição avícola, entre 1994 a l999. Nesse período, foi publicado um total de 496 trabalhos, com uma média de 82,7 trabalhos/ ano. Os trabalhos na área de nutrição revelaram que 64,52% foram realizados com frangos de corte; 24,19%, com poedoiras e aves de reposição; 3,93%, com matrizes pesadas; e 7,66%, com outras aves. Com relação às publicações em forma de resumos expandidos, foram publicados 226 e 163 resumos, nos Anais das Reuniões Anuais da Fundação APINCO de Ciência e Tecnologia Avícolas e da Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, respectivamente. Na Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia e no Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia foram publicados, respectivamente, 65 e 34 trabalhos completos. Os pesquisadores das instituições UFV, UNESP-Jaboticabal e UFRGS publicaram no total 104, 92 e 46 trabalhos. As pesquisas concentraram-se principalmente nas áreas de proteína/aminoácidos (21,77%), avaliação de alimentos (21,77%), minerais (19,15%) e aditivos (16,33%).<br>A literature review of the papers published in the area of poultry nutrition was done considering Brazilian publications from the period of 1994 to 1999. During this period a total of 496 papers were published, with an average of 82. 7 papers/year. The publications in nutrition revealed that 64. 52% were made with broiler chickens, 24. 19% with laying hens and replacement birds, 3.93% with broiler breeders and 7.66% with other type of birds. Considering the publications in the form of summary, 226 and 163, were published in the Proceedings of Fundação APINCO de Ciência e Tecnologia Avícola and Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia, respectively. In the Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Zootecnia and Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia were published, 65 and 34 papers, respectively. Researches in the Universities UFV, UNESP-Jaboticabal and UFRGS, accounted for a total 104, 92 and 46 papers, respectively.
