National audienceLocate our position is one of the tasks we naturally do with our view and our memory. However, ensuring this task in an artificial way is still a challenge for the whole community of computer vision. This paper presents a detailed literature review of pedestrian localization systems and their technologies. In the context of the visually impaired pedestrian navigation assistance, we also present an innovative solution based on the vision localization for both outdoor and indoor navigation. This new solution is established based on the independence of any collective equipment.

Tracking orthogonal vanishing points in video sequences for a reliable camera orientation in Manhattan World

International audienceThis paper proposes an algorithm pipeline for estimating the camera orientation based on vanishing points computation targeting pedestrian navigation assistance in Manhattan World. Inspired from some of published methods, the proposed pipeline introduces a novel sampling strategy among finite and infinite vanishing points and a tracking along a video sequence to enforce the robustness by extracting the three most pertinent orthogonal directions while preserving a short processing time for real-time application. Experiments on real images and video sequences show that the proposed heuristic strategy for selecting orthogonal vanishing points is pertinent as our algorithm gives better results than the recently published RNS optimal method [16], in particular for the yaw angle, which is actually essential for navigation task

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF POINT MATCHING METHODS IN VIDEO SEQUENCES WITH ABRUPT MOTIONS

International audienceIn this paper, we compare the performance of matching algorithms in terms of efficiency, robustness, and computation time. Our evaluation uses as criterion, for efficiency and robustness, number of inliers and is carried out for different video sequences with abrupt motions (translation, rotation, combined). We compare SIFT, SURF, cross-correlation with Harris detector, and cross-correlation with SURF detector. Our experiments show that abrupt movements perturb a lot the matching process. They show also that SURF is the most disturbed, by such motions, and which even fails in cases that present a large rotation unlike the rest of descriptors as SIFT and cross-correlation
